It's not just the 70s. Even in the 90s (when I graduated), the days where you could go get a job right after high school making a living wage were all but gone. You had a much better chance with a college eduction of any kind than you do today, but even then it was no guarantee depending on the degree. guess what, I even feel that recruiters sometimes set you up for an interview, so that they are "busy" doing something and won't get laid off. They may not be really hiring. They just want to look busy. And they may even let you do an interview, some may even ask you to do a 5 hour "homework", and then later on, tell you they are moving on with other candidates, which is just a boilerplate statement. Well, then they won't allow you to be interviewed with that company for a full year. That's bad treatment to you, right? In America, it is called, "Well, it is YOUR problem."

Keep in mind that recruiters aren't always hiring or looking to fill needed positions, they only do that once in a while if they're actually running short of workers. And trust me it got nothing to do with the layout or the colors in your resume because they don't even read it in the first place and don't care about the skills you're bringing to the establishment. They have other criterias based on requests from the general directors as sex, age or place of residence and even if you were the only professionally qualified person among their favorable candidates, they will just stall you with additional interviews and silly homeworks and at the end tell you they'll proceed with other candidates or completely ghost you. Job hunt is simply pure luck and i wish the best of it for everybody that's searching.

Not true. My husband worked as a recruiter and he always made sure to find the right person for the right job. He’d give advice on how to navigate the interviews, what to wear/what to say etc. he also made sure he got as much detail from the clients as possible regarding the job position. He told me the worst thing a recruiter can do is just shove random people for a job and not have them work out or last. He said that reflects on the recruiter. The reason resumes 3 and 5 were unsuccessful is that the Applicant Tracking System (ATS) was unable to read them. Recruiters do not have the time or energy to read every resume; they rely on the ATS, which scans the resumes and assigns a score of up to 100 points. If your score is below 80, you will automatically receive a rejection email. A score above 80 means a recruiter will review your resume. That's why it's advisable to search for an ATS-friendly resume template and use that instead.

I had a 3 year gap in employment and got a job offer. I was honest about it and told the recruiter that I explored and lived life. I got into astronomy, photography, backpacking and travel. Done some of the things I wanted while I was young enough(40’s). They saw value in my passion, experience and boldness and thought these experience offered a unique perspective. Edit: three years is a long time. I got the impression from my interviews that a 12-24 month gap is easier to justify as long as you are doing something. Think taking some courses or the other things I described. Just don’t smoke weed and play games all day. That helps no one haha. It also depends on your field. I’m in business services so it’s easier to walk back in. If your field could pass you by in three years, then maybe consider taking less time or do some volunteer work to keep sharp along with a short course or two while you’re away. Good luck!

I think the result can be biased and it should be mentioned/resolved in the video. This is how they may be biased: After sending the first resumes to each of the companies, many of the recruiters would remember the details of the first resumes. So after sending additional few resumes to the same companies, recruiters could recognize similar information, thus they could be more prone to rejecting other resumes, because of them being sus. This was very insightful. Now, I don't feel as bad. Everything is a game! Technology is upgrading so quickly I can hardly keep up. Take me back to when you could walk into a company office and fill out an application. Take me back to the newspaper and look through the job section. Take me back to the temp agencies. You could practice typing right there in their office. The temp agencies would send you out right away on a job assignment. Now, you don't meet anyone. Everything is filling out your personal information on line and then they don't call you back. Ugh!

"Oh right...that was the time me and Bin Laden was cave hopping in Afghanistan. Do you know mountain goats stink to high heaven, in any case, that was a very stressful time in my life and I said to myself, I need a a new job...and here I am" Do you know what happened next? It can matter, but it usually only for a select number of schools and employers. For example, the state where I live, there are roughly 60 different 4 year colleges. Only 2-3 of them are truly coveted by employers, and for the other 57 or so, it really doesn't matter. It's usually the bigger organizations that pay attention to it, and it's usually just pertains to people right out of college. Where you went to school becomes less and less important as you add more roles and actual work experience to your resume.

From an employer perspective, you are a wage slave. A leased piece of equipment. The idea is that if you can afford to take a year or several years away from wage slavery, you won't be able to be a good wage slave. That's why you don't get hired. If you're gonna do that, start your own company, take courses, work on projects, make it clear the time was still spent working and growing your skills, then they would think you're just an ambitious wage slave.

Another point to note is that these resumes mentioned a Bachelor of Science in Business Management at Williams College in Williamstown, MA. Williams is a liberal arts college and they do not offer any pre professional degrees; therefore, these resumes would be referring to a degree that would be impossible to get at that college. That could be another factor affecting the acceptance rate. A recruiter could do a simple search and realize it’s not legitimate and mark this information discrepancy as a red flag. One would hope that an applicant (even if this is a mock scenario video) would know what degree they are getting and majoring in for four years.

@@jcdenton7914That’s totally fair. I probably should have mentioned that this error would have had more weight for east coast companies that are large and more prominently known. Formatting isn't that important, as long as it's not suck. Following the rules to perfection is should matter only for those who will be designing brochures, making ads, designing trade show booths, making presentations, producing videos, etc. Yet I keep hearing career "experts" saying everyone should make their resume a stellar example of fine design taste, to follow a bunch of formatting rules.

Start with your experience. Quick learner. Computer literate. Follows instructions. Organized. And it doesn't necessarily have to be work oriented. Think about it. Cooking - Using recipes? First you have to plan (what ingredients do you have, make a list of what you need, ). Do you have all the equipment? Grater or zester? Slicer? blender?cutting board, knife for veggies, knife for meat etc. Then you have to go get what you don't have. Then you have to set up tools, foods, bowls, pots & pans - it's called organizing. Then you have to cook items in the order instructions tell you for the time it says to. So you are planning, organizing, managing your time and following instructions. When people say they're a bad cook - they're bad at one or more of those things.

I do think #3 is eye appealing, but I keep reading and hearing from corporate recruiters not to use columns or too much color. Some white space is definitely appreciated. Resume #s 1 and 2 need some white space, they’re busy. And header columns for work experience, education, etc. can be all caps and a color. Mine is teal. Right now, it’s such a game, so I’m trying to be as easy on ATS platforms as possible. Every "career coach" advised me that you need to remove all horizontal and vertical lines (to get past ATS) - and you need to INCLUDE the months. I applied for somewhere between 300-500 jobs, too - after 23 years at the same company - having subsequent jobs with no-name companies hurt me - was laid off 3x in the past 3 years. But I finally caught a break - working again now at a reputable place. I have a standard white woman name, which probably helped. But I'm older than the hills (profile pic is 20 yrs old), which was a huge problem - they assumed I did not know technology - not true. My "gap" was a different type of job - I didn't want to put it on my resume - licensed massage therapist - because it just was irrelevant - was told I should include LMT to show no gap, but I preferred to do things my way. One thing I've heard and agree with - skip the damn pronouns - it tells them you're going to be an entitled problem. I don't care what you call me - just don't call me late for dinner. And if you want me to call you something other than what you are, it's not necessary to tell me in advance.

I've been told that too, to have something in for every "gap". Trouble is, depending on how life went, you might be adding so much inert gap filler material your resume becomes another page longer. These days, if a potential employer has concerns about "gaps" that aren't brushed off with a few words, I just politely end the conversation and cross that company off my list.

If you have few months between jobs stretch the employment timeline. Employers won´t question that nuance. No one is 100% honest, not even the job descriptions.. Just like job titles can be rearranged for example "Garbage man" turned to Waste management officer (As a waste management officer, I created and put the plans in place to provide a reliable and efficient service for the collection, transportation and disposal of waste. Responsible for ensuring legislation is followed and budgets are managed effectively.)

Even if it's been a few years, I would list your last employer as your current employer- as most hiring authorities know contacting them is off limits. There is still some risk there, obviously, that they could both find out and chose to dismiss you for it. But that may be one worth taking.
@Proposal12

@@kevinmach730 If they have a gap of 2 years (however doing further education) cause of the pandemic and worked short project jobs (which if you put those in will make you look like a job hopper) , do you really want to stretch it that far? ...Sure if you move countries different laws apply and most outside the US don´t background check, at the most request for a criminal record...

@@Proposal12 I guess it's a matter of trying to act like you continuing your education vs working. I am overeducated as it is, am older with 25 years in the work force. As such I am not interested in trying to spend more money I education I don't in trying to justify a gap in employment, which is a stupid trend HR that gained traction 10 or so years ago. I do agree that there is some risk, but for me personally, it's definitely a gamble I would take.

As a career coach his advice is spot on for the most part. There was only one part I didn't agree with which was taking the months off with the year but that's up to a personal preference. He is also right about the projects part. Doing something as a simulation is better than not having something to show. Well done!!

Have to say this, in today's job market, I highly highly recommend that you take ANY job that you can land, even those for which you are overqualified and underpaid, and start your own side hustle. Understand that it's unlikely even the best job matching your qualifications can make you rich. Put yourself in charge of your financial success and start your own thing, on the side, in the evenings, working weekends. For decades, this is what musicians and actor wannabes in Hollywood have done. Some struck it big, and some are still waiting tables. You don't always get what you want in life but if you go for it, and you've chosen your hustle in a way that fits with your natural talents, you have a great shot. It is my thesis that most people will make it rich in 1-3 industries with a good effort. Your challenge is to discover 1 of those before it's too late. Steve Jobs at HP? Considered a "bum." Steve Jobs at Apple? A "king!"

My uncle walked into Kroger when he was in high school and within minutes he was bagging groceries for them.fast forward 35 years and he retired from Kroger as some kind of fix it manager type guy that they moved all around the country to straighten out stores that were underperforming or whatever and made a ridiculous amount of money and bonuses and vacations and they paid for mayflower to move his stuff and paid for his housing etc because these assignments were usually a year or more at a time.anyway from a handshake to bag boy to one of their most valued employees and all without a recruiter or formal interview or drug test or anything else.

It's probably still possible. Supermarkets still exist and still hire every day. Probably one of the easiest jobs to get but few are willing to start bagging groceries, and to keep working hard enough to rise through the ranks.

Today? Yeah today they just eliminate bag boys to reduce cost and make you bag your own unless cashier helps. Less effort to just order delivery groceries and skip the register.
