it looks like a decent tent at a good price. I'm always put off Go Outdoors pricing policy though. They say it's a £220 tent but available to members at £59. It's not a £220 tent. No-one's being fooled by that. I wish they'd stop doing it because it makes Go Outdoors look like they think their customers are stupid.

I absolutely love all your videos Paul but you get the huge respect when you review the cheaper but decent products on the market. In fact I went and purchased the OEX Heiro as it released after watching your video on that and it’s seen me through so many camping and hiking trips weeks on end and it’s brilliant! This stuff massively influences those on a budget to get outdoors ✊🏼

I viewed this tent in store at go outdoors. I'm a slim guy and I could see that as soon as I was in a sleeping bag, the inner would be touching the outer. I wait to see the part 2 for Paul's review as a rotund man.

I've got one of those and it has stood up on adventure bikepacking in Scotland. The Bib thing by the door can accumulate rain though but its useful in the dry. I call it the "the coffin tent" because it seems so cramped in there but for that price point it is definately good value.

I use the outer only with a homemade bathtub floor on the inside for my bikepacking/hiking tent, I'm 6ft 1 and I find the inner to be a little too small for me length wise. But I really like it.

Just done a Scottish wild camping expedition from sea kayaks and one of the team used this tent. We had the usual rain and strong winds and he had no complaints about the tent - other than being a bit snug. So a real world test of it and seemed robust enough.

I love my Bob! I was pitching and packing in 5 mins...in the pitch black on a 500mile bicycle tour of Wales a while back. The outer back is a bit 'floppy' and needs 'modding'. At a push,you can leave it together and pitch. I'm only a short arse, so I fit in ok but longer peeps may struggle. The door system is my fave bit. Enjoy!

Definitely need to pitch that tent the right way with regard to the wind direction. Since in the windiest places in the UK- like the cairngorms- the wind direction can change twice per night, and be just as strong, I wouldn't go near using it under such conditions. interesting that Berghaus are also using the model name 'cairngorm' along with Vango (Mine is the Vango Cairngorm 100).

It is not dissimilar to the old Terra Nova Solar tent. Same concept with the single pole, except the Solar is pitch inner first. I’ve used the Solar extensively over the last 25 years and it has served me well. The bobcat is excellent value for money and I do like the additional tie down points on the outer that support the pole, an improvement on the Solar which hasn’t got any. Thanks for sharing Paul. I’m looking forward to seeing it in action.

This is very similar to my 4 season Macpac Microlight tent which I purchased in New Zealand over 30 years ago. It's sheltered me in alpine adventures and beach cyclones all over the world. The only disadvantage is that it weighs 2.5kg, due to older style materials. It's the same single pole construction with a different style of door.

I find when I attempt to put the pole in the second grommet its easier to turn around and pull towards my chest to locate it rather than push away, a small thing but it helps. I like how you sat inside to locate the inner toggles above your head. crouching from outside is less comfy. The single pole wins for me as its so light and easy to strap to your bike top tube or pack side pocket .Condensation no big deal really and the the ring adjusters are easy and secure. Good review🙂

OEX make some fantastic tents for their price! I have a Phoxx1 v 1 which although I found too small for my needs (more a glorified bivi) has survived some really gnarly weather and likewise, a Coyote 3 which I have used as a base camp tent for about four years. The Coyote in particular has surprised me surviving some proper stormy nights with 40mph gusts, torrential rain and even a couple of inches of snow. Ok, they aren't the lightest or at the cutting edge of design, but they are solid and reliable shelters...and much like DFS; Go Outdoors are never far away from having a sale where their own brand stuff can be picked up at a bargain price (never pay full price, there will be an offer along in a couple months! 😉)

Had this tent for a while. Through hiked the south down way a couple of years back and the isle of wight coastal path this month. Done me well in sun, rain and wind. The sagging can be annoying so looking to mod it, if i dont upgrade. Theyve doubled the guys from the pole as mine only has one each side. Also theyve shortened the pole as (dare i say) i always have problems getting it in the hole. Nice review.
@Ash12530

This tent was how I first started my wild camping! It’s a good little shelter, and it certainly can handle some rough stormy conditions, as I myself know well! It’s a very warm tent also, you could easily use it as a proper 4-season shelter.. downsides are that it is on the heavy side for a small 1-pole 1-man tent, and it does suffer badly from condensation! And that very saggy inner becomes very annoying quickly. I fixed that issue with a 6-kg pull weight neodymium magnet under that guy-out point at the back, place the other opposite on the inner and bobs your uncle… I don’t have this tent anymore, but I certainly made the right choice buying it in starting out with the wild camping. 👍🏻
@Funitalianlessons
@Funitalianlessons 10 місяців тому
Wouldn’t that magnet make the inner and outer touch though?
@Ash12530
@Ash12530 10 місяців тому
@@Funitalianlessons essentially, yes! But only at that small contact point of the magnets. I couldn’t think of another better solution, so that was the clear fix for me.. Besides, the inner and outer are all stuck together in the morning anyhow, due to the condensation issues of this very small tent.

Ive just bought one today off the back of this vid (and others ) and pitched it in my garden .the back of the tent isnt saggy at all if done correctly .it seems important to put more tension on the door side guys than the rear centre tie out .also its very easy to drop the inner and sit on it and increase the internal volume by around 20 % i reckon like this 2 people could sleep in it , if needed , as its 1.4 m wide and 2.2 m long . Really pleased with this tent so far. gonna change the pegs out and ditch a few unnecessary ones should get the weight down to around 1.8 kg . Which isnt too bad

This is the tent that was famously last tent standing of a group of three following a bit of a storm in the Lakes. The other two tents were a Tarptent (trashed) and a Hilleberg Soulo BL (bent pole). This little £59 Bobcat shrugged off the gusts 😁 and laughed. I have one and it’s very sturdy but the sloping fabric drives me nuts.

I was looking at these and got the opportunity to try one out. Unfortunately, it was too small for me (I'm 6'3" for reference). I opted for the OEX Phoxx 2 v2. It's an excellent tent, and can be pitched within 5 minutes. However, you certainly couldn't sleep 2 people in there (comfortably, at least). It fits me and all my gear with a bit of room to move around (although I can't sit up in it). For £98 (included discount with my DofE card), it's a decent backpacking tent. It's a worthy sacrifice for a bit heavier (compared to other lighter backpacking tents) and a bit more expensive (compared to other budget backpacking tents).

I think I got mine when it was 40 quid. It might have been 49.99... can't remember. I'd like it if it was just a bit bigger. I've now managed to find a Terra Nova solar 1 second hand which I think might have been the tent that inspired this design.
@James-gf9jl
@James-gf9jl 10 місяців тому
I've had mine for three years now and used across four seasons. I've sawn 10mm off one of the pole sections to make it easier to locate in the rings. The aerodynamics are a slight problem in that, if you pitch with the vestibule on the leeward side, the prevailing wind pushes in the tent wall and robs more of the little space you have. Inner is always in contact with the outer. I use a delta peg on this guy, but it doesn't solve the issue. On the upside, it is very waterproof, quick pitch and packs down well.

I wouldn't advise sleeping on a inflatable bed or camp bed because it's EXTREMELY small inside and you will definitely wake up in middle of the night having a panic attack... trust me...I know from experience 🤣🤣 it's still a good tent though...I love how solid as a rock it is

Nice intro' review Paul. I've owned the Bobcat for a few years and have used it several times (and at least once in one of my vids). As you've mentioned, it's a great little tent for the price. Regarding your inner touching the outer. I think that you've just not got the fly pitched tight/taught enough. Also, pegging out the porch groundsheet will help matters. My problem with the inner, is that I find it to be a bit flappy with it touching you when inside. All of the mods that I've seen for the Bobcat are designed to address this issue, with an extra tie-out point on the back of the inner panel connected to the inside of the fly, thus tensioning the back panel of the inner, pulling it out and keeping it away from you. Also, I noticed that my Bobcat only has one guideline connected on each side of the outer pole, and not two on each side like yours has. Incidentally, you can also unzip the bottom of the main door and then peg it out with a couple of trekking poles to make a nice awning. 👍 Finally, if you ditch the inner then it makes a spacious tarp as you can use the central area, rather than be at the back of the tent, and it doesn't weigh a great deal when used like this, not much more than a regular tarp (including the pole weight).

Bought one of these a rew years back called a North ridge Col. Tried it out first up by Loch Treig on a windy night and found even fully guyed out the wind flexed the top pole and the first thing that happened was the fly met the inner across the back. Wind bend then got worse so it was like I was wrapped up in the fly with no waterproofing. I ended up getting my bivvy bag out. So for me, decent tent for nice conditions!

Those pegs and poles are identical to the ones that came with my Terra Nova Ultra Quasar 30 years ago, I camped in the garden last night to escape the oppressive heat of a South-facing bedroom. I used a Snugpak polycotton rectangular sleeping bag liner and the Snugpak Jungle blanket and tucked the blanket edges under my old Thermarest, in an ‘a la quilt stylee’. That Thermarest (183x51x3.8cm) resulted in possibly the worst nights sleep (2.5 hours) I’ve ever had, so time for a new mat, preferably a LW either Exped or S2S. On the plus side, that blanket is very warm, so no sleeping bag needed in Summer, super packable perfect for cycle touring / bikepacking I’d like to do. The mod I’ve seen for this tent was to use 2 extra tie-outs from Wild Skye Gear that glue to the rear of the flysheet, and with extra guylines the flysheet is pulled away from the inner. I’d read of a Scots YTer who tested his in blustery conditions, a 30mph gust flattened the pole and the inner touched his face (when lying down) then the pole popped back into shape. His 2 companions fared less well, a Lanshan 2 ripped its flysheet and the TT Scarp 1 owner also suffered a ripped flysheet. TT like to tell people how strong the Scarp is…. I think my money will go on the Luxe Hexpeak V4A.

Nice review, Paul. I did get one a 18-month ago but was just a bit disappointed with the head room, I ended up getting an MSR Elixir in the end just for a little more space. However, nothing wrong with the bobcat for the price as it is a good step up from a bivibag. Keep up the good work mate. Would add though mine didn't have as many guy lines, just the one each side of the pole.

Have you been out in the Elixir yet i had one before this and it was a super tent for three years but camped in a bad storm in the lakes a few years back and i found the pegging points on it pretty rubbish and it managed to blow apart the poles in the middle and stab a pan sized hole straight through the roof of my tent .

Paul it's almost identical to the discontinued Terra Nova Solar 1. I've had mine decades. It has survived severe winds. I was vac packed in one during an epic on Helvelynn in the 90's. The single pole sort of bends but doesn't snap and is perfectly re-usable again in normal conditions. The alternative is to buy a new pole if you want to go out in strong winds again. I love mine so I'm pleased to see a cheaper alternative. Cheers!

Same shape but the Solar pitches inner first with the pole attaching to the inner rather than the flysheet. Great tent, mine is over 20 years old!

I hear good things about this tent, I wonder how it would perform on a wet and windy night up on Kinder.

Looks like you took a visit to my local Go Outdoors in Chesterfield, for some reason they love to take my money too 😂😂😂 I too seem to have taken a liking to OEX equipment recently,, yet another great UK company on the rise making good affordable kit 👍 Yet another fantastic video Paul, keep up the great work, I love your whole attitude to it all, and you are so relatable 👍

It was my first tent in the UK. Loved it. Had 16h of rain in Wales with it and was just fine. Just replaced it because wanted something lighter, not because it had any performance problem.

It's described as 2m in length in the sleeping area but most reviews have stated its too small for a 6ft man.

Bought this as a backpacking tent. Great for the money (paid the same as you) I prefer the OEX Rakoon 2 which at £75 (at the time) is a much larger tent, and perfect for 1 person, even if it is a little heavier.

Bar the lack of the small cross bar pole on the top this has a lot of similarities to the original Phoenix Phreeranger EB which was a cracking small one to one and a half person tent which was renowned for surviving some pretty horrendous conditions think it was Chris Townsend who used on on the Appalachian trail in the USA. Also Macpac did their own version later called the Macpac Microlight against a really solid performer.

This is a good tent. I am pretty sure it is modelled on a terra nova solar from the early 2000s (I still have one)so it should be good with that heritage

That looks decent and very similar design to my Vango Apex 200 that I've had for 10 years now. It's a bit tired now and should probably be replaced. Change the pole and the pegs and I reckon you could shave some of that weight off. I wouldn't be surprised if I could modify that tent by salvaging parts from my Vango. My Vango does suffers from the same problem of the fly touching the inner but it's never been a problem to be honest.

Is there an alternative mesh inner for it? Because otherwise it's going to be too warm for the summer surely, never mind a potential problem with condensation.

OEX make some cracking budget tents. I have the Phoxx 2 which is really a 1.5 but it fits me and a wet German Shepherd at a reasonable weight for one to carry.

The crinkly sound of the fabric makes it sound almost brittle, which would make it prone to tearing along the perforations formed by needle holes. Time will tell.

I like the unique design. Usually cheap tents are just copycats. One thing I really like about tents in the UK is they’re almost all outer pitch first (or together). Almost all our tents in the US pitch inner first, which is annoying. 2 kilos is a bit heavy for a 1-person tent, but it does have a solid inner.

I had a hand in designing the bobcats predecessor....the north ridge col lite. The col lite was 1.6kg, and came about after I modified/butchered my original col 1 when I worked in the tent department at GO in Manchester. They still need to attach the inner to the outer where the guy out point is....and I'd add more guy outs on the rear panel. Great little tent for £59....and if your 5.11 or shorter. I bought loads of gear from go on my staff discount....I always told my ex they were freebies off reps 🤣

Thanks for reviewing budget friendly options. Many people are scared off from backpacking (wildcamping) by the cost of the gear. The backpacking community has a high penetration of gear snobs who think only the most expensive gear is useful. I have a lot of money tied up in gear, but some of my go to gear is actually quite inexpensive. I doubt that tent is available in the US but I will have to look. It could be a good starter tent to recommend to friends.

I started wild camping when I was 15. I had a sleeping bag and several garbage bags stuck together with duct tape. It wasn't the best nights sleep but it worked. Just get outside with what you have!

Too many gear snobs who cant carry a 40lb pack, and that in my eyes is light, anyway, all hobbys now are snob orientated, the fishing game is the same, no £650 rod.. Ahh your a cock... No £600 sleeping bag... Your a cock.... Need to wake up pussies
