Exactly... the worst thing for ICE cars are short trips that don't heat everything up to operating temp... I own plenty of performance wagons and would happily consider a Leaf or Prius over a scooter for short town trips.

@@allosaurusfragilis7782 Well into retirement, buy a bungalow where you’re planning of spending your remaining years, garage/driveway to yourself to have a charger installed in, don’t feel confident doing any more big drives and don’t need to as kids drive to you / ferry you about for anything long. People generally get less and less confident or find it too much fuss to drive a lot in the latter years until they just end up pottering around locally (and eventually give up their licence or have it taken away from them). Battery won’t likely ever go under 50%. I live in an area with a lot of oldies and there’s loads of Leafs round here on drives that probably fit that demographic. Even I could probably get away with something like the last gen i3 for 95% of my driving but there’s just enough airport runs and decent 2nd/3rd gen EVs in my budget to sway me yet.

@@PaulSteere this Leaf has only six of twelve bars on the battery state of health indicator, so it's down to 50% capacity already, which is probably why the main dealer could not sell it. For it to have gone so badly in only eight years and with so little mileage is concerning. Warranty covers 8 years or 100,000 miles, with replacement battery if it falls below 9 bars (75%) capacity, so should have been covered.

However, the warranty covers 8 years or 100,000 miles, with replacement or repaired battery if it falls below 9 bars (75%) capacity, so should have been covered. Why has it not been resolved? From the Nissan website: 30 KWH LEAF : If the battery capacity level gauge of your 30 kWh Nissan Electric Vehicle falls below 9 bars (out of 12 bars) within 100,000 miles or the first 8 years of the vehicle’s life (whichever comes first), Nissan will repair or replace the damaged battery components free of charge to bring the capacity up to 9 bars.

@musclerent
@musclerent 2 місяці тому
Yes, I'm sure thats the reason the main dealer didn't want it...a heavily degraded battery and OUT OF BATTERY WARRANTY!!. The Leaf doesn't have battery cooling and that leads to faster degradation...plus it's 10 years old. EV batteries lose typically 2% of capacity a year on average, though every car will be unique based on how it was charged (lots of fast charging/not good), how it was driven and how long it's been left either fully charged or almost empty (not good) during it's life

But the previous owners took the piss and they just mistreated the battery. 30 kwh Nissan leaf is actually a sweet vehicle. 120+ miles range, which is more comfortable than the 80+ on standard one. And 30kwh wasn't even prone to battery degradation. The owners just went out of their way to only charge it from 90 to 100%. Probably a council car

This, I feel, would bring the story to a completed end. How about it?

My wife and I were in our Nissan dealer service department today. Which strangely has started selling MGs now (cheap Chinese new cars at sub 20k-discuss). My wife has a 2019 Micra N sport. ( I think it’s a great car, looks good, nice sharp exterior design, Interiors good (interior is what actually sold it to me in the showroom back in 2019 almost straight away), has four doors but looks like a 2 door, has a proper handbrake, a proper manual gearbox and drives great with all the sprint you ever need in the suburbs of a city. Folks often ask us what it is. When you say it’s a Micra they say ‘I didn’t know they still made them but I would buy one. Too bad, you can’t anymore). Anyway, there was a new ‘Leaf’ parked beside the service reception in the showroom. We both commented on how boring it looked. Have designers just given up with car styling? It’s electric, therefore, never mind how it looks, you are doing ‘good’. If you want to sell the ‘future’ to us, at least make it desirable. Make it like the LCD TV compared to the CRT TV. Make it better in all ways to us ordinary car owners so that we desire one. ‘Saving the planet’ (debatable) is good, but not enough. Not holding my breath, anytime soon🙂

Had a second gen 40kwh leaf on lease for 2 years and absolutely loved it. The e-pedal one foot driving is hands down a game changer and something that other EV’s just don’t do as well. We have an MGEV now and it’s just not as good at one pedal driving. One issue is that the leaf has air cooled batteries not liquid like pretty much all of them now, so for running and gunning motorway charging the battery can overheat and just reject charges. But with a home charger and local second car, leafs are wicked.
@trevorberridge6079
@trevorberridge6079 Місяць тому
The so-called Rapidgate was massively mis-reported. The 40kwh Leaf was programmed to protect the battery by ramping down charging speed if you Rapid charge three or four times in quick succession. They upgraded the software to be more generous with this safety protocol, but it was down to over cautious software and not entirely down to the battery itself. My 24kwh Nissan Leaf has NO active cooling and it has actually cooled down during charging on some occasions. When I drove to Edinburgh I did eight consecutive Rapid charges on the way up and eight consecutive Rapid charges on the way back with no noticeable effect on charging speed. The temperature did rise quite a bit but it capped off below the point where it would be an issue. I learned during those two days (drove up on a Tuesday, drove back the next morning) that the battery was never going to overheat on any journey I was ever likely to make. And in eight years it never has.

As a Leaf owner I can attest to battery degradation not being nearly as bad as people seem to believe. Just ask yourselves, would Nissan warranty the battery for 100k miles and 8 years if the battery were likely to conk out anywhere close to that? It would mean they have to replace the battery for free in perpetuity. And just so you know, 100k miles and 8 years is a standard warranty for most EVs. So the Leaf isn't regarded as a particular high risk for battery degradation compared to other EVs. They are generally speaking very hardy cars.
@andytunnicliffe7223

@@trevorberridge6079 but is degradation the same as ‘conking out’? The old leafs seemed to lose capacity to charge to 100% more quickly than other ev’s.
@trevorberridge6079
@trevorberridge6079 Місяць тому
@@andytunnicliffe7223 Correct. Because active thermal control is better for the battery and the early Leaf models don't have it. But in reality the car still does well over 100k miles before it drops below 70% capacity. If you treat it from day one with battery health in mind it degrades much slower. I actually took my battery from 79% back up to 92% by taking care of it better after the first year. But, if you continue with bad habits it will deteriorate faster. Treat it well and it should last 12 good years and the battery won't have actually conked out even then.

I bought an MG EV (not LR version) a couple of years ago. Quoted mileage was 200, actual mileage with good weather was about 180. The horror story was in cold weather, heater on and lots of motorway driving it was 135 range. A 230 mile trip to London to see FIL needed a stop halfway and then a stop near London to recharge to 80% (so 100 miles range @80%). After 2 years had enough, traded in for a Hyundai Kona, quoted mileage was 300, nice weather 275 actual and very cold/motorway around 220. 220 miles I can live with, even trips to London only really need 1 good stop. Added bonus is we have solar panels and a 7kW house charger so half the year our fuel cost is tiny, the other 6 months its about £16 (27p per kW) for 220 - 250) miles range from house charger - I wouldn't want to be charging all the time on public chargers.............

Even if you have solar panels, any electricity you use from them to charge an EV is not "free" - it costs you whatever your electricity supplier would have paid you to export to the grid (in our case 15p per kWh). Autotrader did a flat out range test on a 10 year old LEAF which had just 8 out of 12 battery bars showing (about 70% of its new capacity), and managed 21.6 miles. The top speed on these is limited to 88mph (despite the overly optimistic speedo reading 98) so it would have taken 15 minutes to drain completely. The temperature was below freezing for the test though. A brand new one would have done around 30 miles in 21 minutes under the same conditions - so in theory you could lose a third of its range, 10 miles, in 7 minutes. We were given this brand new Leaf to evaluate for our job - courier doing stop start in a 10 hour day covering on average 78 miles. We drove like we stole it, my colleague was a petrol head and we needed to know if it was up to the task. 13 hour recharge from a 13 amp socket. Max indicated range 99 miles. Speedo, accurate or not indicated 99 mph flat out, and TBH it was not for off. The figures I quoted above were accurate, on a fully charged battery. This was the third electric vehicle we evaluated, and at the time, none of them were up to the job. After I retired, an EV was supplied which had a range of 220 miles. I can't remember what it was. EVs have their place, and I have used, driven or flown engines of 2 and 4 stroke, petrol, diesel, LPG, Avgas, Steam/Coal and electric from mopeds to HGV, railway locos and aircraft. Nothing would make me have an EV for my own use, it's not practical out in the sticks for me.

Something like a 2 year old Hyundai Kona would literally blow this Leaf out of the water, as it would have 5 times the range, way more performance, be vastly superior in it's efficiency, and would be capable of using chargers capable of charging in around a 5th of the time this old Leaf could. I think it will be obvious to most EV owners that your inexperience of EV's is likely to get you burnt. Unless you can claim on the battery warranty you have a bit of a lemon here. The key thing to note, as many already have, is that this LEAF has poor battery health with only 6 of the original 12 battery status bars left. I would not have considered this even for the £3,800 you originally paid. Don't get fooled by "low" mileage as this is less relevant to an EV its more about the care previous owners have taken with the charging. For instance leaving a car on a public rapid charger overnight is not only inconsiderate but also will not do the battery health any favours. There are of course inexperienced customers out there who might just think it a cheap way into an EV and pay your price but if you find then you are one lucky SOB :-)

A slow drip will be absorbed by the sponge, but if the taps turned full on, plenty of water will bounce off never to be absorbed, then imagine a sponge sitting outside in the weather over the weeks... (dries out and cracks appear etc. Best way to maintain an EV is to slow charge to 85% (ish) never stretching its ability to absorb and if parked over time only have 50 or less % to ensure longigevity

without any evidence to support this, I would guess the car has been left plugged in charging all the time (or the SoC sitting close to 100% for extended periods of time).

I’m sat watching and chuckle at your public EV charging experience (my reality). I agree the the spec on the Nissan Leaf is one of the many reasons I chose the i3, you can not compare the build quality and thankfully my i3 was optioned to possibly to the max by the original owner (kerching,, thank you). No plastic steering wheel 😜. Did I spy a Cartier ring? Kerbling 😝

Ah, yes the Mk 1 Leaf, with it's Miss Marple bodywork. These can be bought quite cheaply now, and the plus part is that the Leaf is pretty basic (in EV terms) and is reasonably inexpensive to get the battery pack refurbished. One UKposts video I saw of a Leaf battery refurb - carried out by a UK based EV specialist - cost £500, and took just 4 hours. If cheap commuting is what you're after, one of these could do the trick... The battery health can be checked via the diagnostic socket, using an OBD.... Finding a Chademo connector for charging might be a struggle now Matt, as they're slowly becoming outdated.....and it could be why the dealer wanted to move this on. This might have a 30kw battery Matt... An RFID card is used instead of an app, if you don't have a smartphone Matt. You can get an RFID card from most charge network providers for free.... Most newer chargers have a contactless payment facility, to take a debit or credit card payment, in which case no app or RFID card is needed. There's one of these on my local taxi rank, with 180k miles on it..... The newer, Sunderland built Leafs are generally held up to be better built than the older Japanese built ones. The Jap ones have very light beige coloured seat upholstery...... The Leaf you have is a British, Sunderland built one....

Judging from the history it's been for sale for a few months for around the £6,999 mark. They couldn't shift it and then punted it on to you. Seems crazy to me that they sell it to you so much cheaper but that must be just how it is in the trade.

I bet they had no idea the battery was still under warranty either. I have spoken to Stealerships where they did not even realise they were selling cars with battery rental. Even when I pointed it out to them - I think they thought I was making it up. My neighbour chopped in a Renault EV van [rented battery] and the dealer way overpaid him because they had no idea that the battery was rented (like Zoes).

Yes Matt. You've proved, in a couple of videos, that getting an EV with a small battery and relying on public chargers is a fool's errand. That's why, at the moment, anyone with sense is getting EVs with 300+ range and has a home charger.

The dealer couldn't sell it because the battery is shot. You have bought a lemon because you haven't done the most basic of thing and checked the battery health which is stareing you in the face. The battery health is approx 40% so you will be lucky to get 20-30 miles. I suspect the car has been left uncharged for a long period of time at 0% and it has ruined the battery.
@trevorberridge6079

40% on a 30kwh Leaf is good for up to 53 miles. If you'd done the most basic maths you'd know that.
@deansh8506
@deansh8506 Місяць тому
@@trevorberridge6079 if you do the most basic of maths you would realise that a 30kWh has an actual usable battery range of 28kWh when brand new. That being 360 GIDS's at 80Wh per GID. 40% of 28kWh is 11.2kWh. 11.2kWh x 3.25 miles/kWh (average efficiency for a LEAF) = 36 miles. But who in their right mind is going to drive the LEAF down to 0% as the range is very unpredictable at the lower end of the battery scale. So in the real world 30 miles range at best.
