And when think of the bloody expensive enclosure it’s unavoidable to think of rather build a pc that small but much less problem and much more performance (eGPU eat up approximately 10% on GPU on external monitor, if feedback on laptop monitor, it consume about 15%)

Thanks for this video. I have an Alienware Graphics Amplifier (AGA), unfortunately it is riddled with problems which many people who bought it seem to be experiencing and Dell doesn’t seem to care or provide much support for it. Their “support” seems to revolve around pushing the blame back onto the customer by saying the AGA only supports certain graphics cards, even going so far as to say that card manufacturers may have VBIOS settings which conflict with the AGA, causing incompatibility issues. That has been my experience at least when I reached out to them for help with my AGA which is effectively useless because apparently my Galax GTX 1660 Super is not on the compatibility list. Stay away from the AGA at all costs if you can, and if you do buy one you do so at your own risk.

I had a similar issues with the same laptop and my Razer core V2. The solution I used was going in and manually turning off the internal 1660. It can cause problems if you don’t turn it back on when disconnecting the laptop. What I found was the 1660 turn on (while gaming) for a brief second and taking priority over the EGPU. Found it out by watching both cards power usage in MSI afterburning.

The CPU would be the main bottleneck so it would vary a lot... basically just look at "GPU Usage" and if it's close to 100% on the laptop setup a desktop CPU wouldn't help much.. if it was closer to 50% only GPU usage then you've got a severe CPU bottleneck so might double your FPS... plus of course there may be latency issues and micro-stutters due to the interface so you need to compare carefully... the CPU bottleneck is probably the main reason why it's a waste of money to add an RTX2080Ti but laptop CPU's are getting faster.

I just got my Razer Core X, I installed my GTX 1060 ti into it and it has made a world of difference. It has in some cases tripled my performance. My setup uses the Lenovo Yoga 730 15” with an internal GTX 1050. I have an external monitor with mouse an keyboard setup at my workstation. I also use a Pluggable thunderbolt hub and plug the eGPU into that. Even though the software says that it may not work properly, I have had no problems so far. It makes no sense to me why you would try to run it on your laptop screen. Running games on such a small screen is awful. If you were going to try out eGPU’s why didn’t you go with the razer core x? It really is the best option out there. It’s really empowering to be able to game this well at home but then still have the capability to travel or even just sit on the couch and program.

Well i think most of you don't realize the real long term meaning of having an EGPU : 1- Being able to choose a small , good looking, lightweight ultrabook whenever you're looking for a new PC 2- 80% of desktop performance is still a lot better than an igpu 3- These enclosures are pretty expensive but for a cheapo gaming experience this is pure madness : 80$ for one of the M.2 cheap versions of these connectors , 5$ for a cheap psu and when you're a student that cannot afford a gaming pc , for 85$ you got yourself a home gaming device without sacrificing your laptop 4- in a gaming laptop if your gpu gets too old, you'll have to get a whole new laptop; with an Egpu you just have to slap a new graphics card and you're good to go. I'm the cheapo guy, i have an old Elitebook (this thing is absolutely indestructible) with a 35€ EXP GDC adapter, had an old 7950 lying around from my old desktop computer. I spent some time configuring it but now i can at least play recent games, not in ultra, but at least it's playable and i only got to spend 35 bucks and a few hours of my time. So yeah , worth it.

@ejsanjose3608 4 роки тому
I agree with most of your points though I'm skeptical with the 2nd point you mentioned; 2- 80% of desktop performance is still a lot better than an igpu While it's true that you'll lose around 80% of desktop GPU performance in EGPU it is also worth mentioning that current-gen IGPU is just 10% behind the desktop GPU- I have MSI GT75 titan 8sg with desktop RTX 2080 that IGPU performs virtually same with a desktop counterpart with just a margin of 10 percent difference, use EGPU with RTX 2080 inside and I will lose 20 to 30% percent of performance I'm getting out of my IGPU. It is not that of a mobile though since it's beefy but I would say the same with carrying an extra EGPU.

While eGPUs do have their niche uses, they seem like such bad investments since you're giving up a fair amount of performance (limited PCIE lanes for Thunderbolt 3, overhead from the controller) and can have wildly different experiences depending on how the laptop implemented Thunderbolt 3. I don't know how small your new place is exactly, but I was able to keep a mid-sized tower in a 36 square foot room (480 square foot apartment), relatively comfortably. It involves a loft bed, splitting a 36 square foot bedroom in half horizontally, and a lot of ducking though, mind you.

If you buy cheap ones like (in the 100-200 range) or use a intergrated one (from Aorus/Gigabyte) it’s actually good. Also an egpu is a pretty high end solutions so you need pretty big budgets. But if you are in the budget, it’s not a bad value

I would like to see a desktop PC that allows you to hook a laptop up via thunderbolt to take advantage of the desktop GPU, but otherwise, pull from the laptop resources. I think it would be a nice setup to remove KVMs. Edit* After thinking about it, there probably isn't much incentive because you could just remote into the laptop.

it’s a phenomenal option for the right situation. all of you people commenting negatively are not seeing it from the perspective of someone that needs this option. you clearly don’t, so it doesn’t make sense to you. that’s ok, but don’t shit on the option. options are GREAT things to have. if you can only afford 1 pc every 10 years and you travel for work so you need a laptop,... well you can’t have an internal upgrade so having the option to do ANYTHING to help bring the graphics up to speed for current gen games is better than giving up on gaming. Be grateful for options. you may not need them, but it’s cool to have them if you happen to find yourself in a unique situation. 👍🏻

I really wish eGPUs would get more support. Right now, they’re largely “limited” to Thunderbolt 3. TB3 only has 4 PCIe lanes allowing a total of 32 Gb/s whereas an internal card would use 16 lanes at 128 Gb/s. I wish someone would just design a standard hot swappable 16 lane PCIe port specifically for eGPUs. I’m ardently on team laptop because of portability, but I am regularly upset by their lack of upgradability

Honestly, when you stated the price, that was a pretty hard turn off. It's a piece of twisted metal with electronic bits in it. An average CPU case shouldn't cost much over $100, and the electronics inside are, at best, raspberry pi equivalent.

It is certainly possible (in fact it is what I did). ADT-link TB3 (via Ali express) + eBay 2nd hand Dell PSU 230Watt. Less than 200$ in total, and no case is needed. Adding a case complicates cooling, it makes the whole think much heavier and less portable, and it cost double. Best case is no case!
@gormauslander
@gormauslander 2 роки тому
@@javiej i disagree on that last point to some degree. Cooling and weight are impeded, but your electronics are protected. For an egpu, whose nature is portability, I would want the case. I just wouldn't pay $400 for it, I'd make it
@javiej
@javiej 2 роки тому
@@gormauslander Well, it depends on your eGPU concept. To start with I assume that if somebody wants one is because these cases : - When a laptop class GPU is not enough for the purpose. - When you want something repairable & upgradeable But we still have to distinguish two cases, portable eGPU or fixed eGPU. 1 - If you need a "portable" eGPU then the best solution is to buy a mini pc, (best eGPU is no eGPU ;) , for example an Intel NUC (one of the models including a discrete GPU) and a portable monitor. Note that when using an eGPU, the GPU itself plus the companion PSU are big enough as to make the size of the NUC motherboard and CPU irrelevant, so it is like putting them."inside the eGPU case",.that is, a miniPC. Provides desktop class performance and saves the size and cost of the thunderbolt electronics + using two cases + two PSU + and extra cables. And you still get the repairability and upgradeaibility of a PC. 2 - But if you plan to use the laptop on the go and the eGPU only at home (or only at the work place ) then the "no case" solution is enough, which is the case I was talking. Ideally with some DIY around for cable management and protection (mine is well protected behind the monitor so I don't care too much. But with some home work aesthetics can be even better than a commercial case. In any case I think paying near 400$ for a commercial eGPU case GPU excluded (or a proprietary eGPU solution such as the new Asus) is a non sense (or if you like to waste 50% of the budget on aesthetics and only dedicate 50% to functionality then better buy a Mac, they match that concept perfectly)
