So I wanted to take on the responsibility of building an amplifier that can compete with boutique offerings going for upwards of $3000 for only around $300 using boards from Parts Express and a case from Ghent Audio. By following Toids DIY Audio's tutorial video I was able to accomplish my goal. Check out the video and comment below whether you are up for the challenge!

I don't understand why there aren't (maybe I just haven't found them?) integrated tube amp kits available. Surely you could build something as good as a Willsenton R8 for far less money, especially given that the technology is well, old and well understood, by now. Sure would be nice to build a $1500 amp for around $300 to $500 depending on the tube complement you choose. I'm old enough to remember Heath Kit. A high school friend of mine and his dad built a TV in the 1970s from them. And it worked!

I agree. There should be DIY Tube amp kits more readily available.
@carlose.martinez545
@carlose.martinez545 9 місяців тому
@@mykandrew You may find some preamp tube kits on AE or Amazon, but you won't find power amps. Why? Because tube power amps need output transformers, which as much or more than a whole tube preamp alone. What you will find in AE/Amazon are hybrids: tube first stage, class D output stage. Not the same thing.

If all you need is a small "drop" of solder you can melt the solder on the tip of your soldering iron, and then place the tip to the point being soldered. It doesn't hurt adding a dab of flux with like a toothpick to the point being soldered first. You don't need to always add solder via the solder itself, many time just the tip of the soldering pen will hold enough for what you need. If your solder is "rolling off" the point being soldered, you need more flux. This will work even with small wire soldering. I don't know how good they are, but there are soldering guns that "feed" the solder to the tip for you. But most people I see soldering don't use them. But again, for a small "drop" of solder, in theory it seems they would work. Good Luck!

If I just needed yet another power amp, I might build this. My failure mode would be the lack of a life line when it didn't work. Are these the Hypex modules?

You messed up at the power connector. It should be on the inside, not outside. I know because I just made the same mistaking building mine and luckily caught it in time to fix it before all the soldering. Also in the standoffs, you needed to have the metal stand off at specific mounting locations for grounding I think.

Its DIY. When you build speakers do you manufacture the drivers? How do you think manufacturers build their D class amps with ICE blocks and Hypex modules. Open a PS Audio amp and look inside. True its not a Heathkit from the 60's and 70's.

200 watts for what ? You hardly need 15 watts RMS at max for a normal listening room until unless its a big hall or open space listening even for a low sensitive speakers like 85db or so. All these watts SHOW on Amps, no idea what's this all about.
