many of my friends and acquaintances buy new vehicles as soon as a problem happens, with the age old excuse of "better get rid of it before more issues happen that cost a lot of money" then they proceed to buy a new vehicle that's 4-600 a month, or 5-7k a year expense (on top of new tags and taxes that are much higher) I, for one, don't get it. You can replace the entire transmission and motor for dang near one year of a new car purchase and how many cars really need one or the other before many many miles or catastrophic failure/negligence. Of course we all want reliable transportation and there is a point where an older vehicle needs to go, but people use this as an excuse more times than not to pacify that spending habit for new stuff to look cool. every vehicle I own has high miles and is early 2000s but all work perfect, had to do repairs, one was a transmission for 1500$ but the other repairs are minimal and dang sure not the cost of a year or even half a year of a new car payment, vehicles are much more reliable than use to be. To each their own, but we prefer debt free and trying to pay our house off so we can have true financial freedom and peace, its a sacrifice that's more than worth it to my wife and I.

If the body of an old car is clean and you know what work has gone into it and it drives well,every part is changeable and can be replaced second hand..if you buy a new second hand car you are taking a gamble.stick with your old known car and repair it .

I had a 1993 Toyota Camry that I got rid of 2016 that I bought used for $3,000 cash and drove it for 2.5 years, but it went from nickle and dime to dollar costing me I had to get rid of it. I replaced it with a factory new 2016 Toyota Corolla that I'm still driving today and will be for many more years to come.

😂I'm laughing at this. I'm soon selling my newer car to renew a old Volvo s60r. Reman engine/ transmission, paint, suspension etc. ID take old vs new any day. And if he said 2k in repairs, it's really only 300-400 diy. Suspension work is usually very easy.

I'm concerned about reliability, I'm going to get a hand me down car, it's a 2001 pt cruiser with 177000 miles on the odometer. 2.4 liter n.a. four cylinder, 4 speed automatic transmission. There's no body rust on it, and the fluids and parts were changed regularly, but from what I heard, they were known for electrical problems, think I hear a concerning tick coming from the engine, and I don't know when the timing belt was last changed, because from what if heard, if the timing belt fails, the valves hit each other, should I keep it or should I junk it

So thr beaty of an old car, is tat their are olenty in junkyards. If your steuggle bussing, go to a junk yard and get the parts you need on the cheap. If your not mechanically inclined, bring a friend. If you need, you csn bring the parts to a mechanic, then youll only pay for labor. Buying new parts on old cars are upchatged bc its a rareity for someone to need or have the parts
@kyungshim6483

I think the economic analysis here is wrong. If fixing the suspension brings the old car to be at the quality of a much newer and more expensive car, then I think it is worth fixing it even if the car does not appreciate in value after the fix. The correct economic analysis is to compare marginal cost vs marginal gain. That is, if the cost to fix the old car is lower than the extra cost of trading in for a newer car then it is better to fix the car. For course, this is assuming you end up with similar quality vehicles whether the old car is fixed or traded in for another car.

All you people into finances need to start learning how to fix these things yourself. Labor is much more than the parts, you can probably replace the suspension for a few hundred bucks then pay a hundred for an alignment. Instead of thousands you spend 100s. I don’t advise doing engine and transmission stuff unless you’re willing to go to the junkyard, to get them and you know what your looking for. Any of you can learn to do basic maintenance and repairs, brakes, shocks, things like that.

I would have to disagree wirh George on this one. The 94-01 Camrys are literally the most reliable economy cars ever made. Iron block, non-interference 2.2 4 cylinder. Only complaint is a timing belt, which is like $600 every 100k miles? I'd take it over 95% of the new cars that are on the roads today.

My friends and I have come a long ways generationally speaking. Out of the bunch, I make almost double what they make a year and they give me so much crap about not buying a new car. This last month I had to do about 4k worth of work on my 07 Honda. I almost drove myself to a dealership to upgrade because it’s annoying hitting those “high mileage” bumps. But, I asked my mechanic and he said I still had 200k miles left on this 07. I bit the bullet and paid the 4k. Because I don’t have a car payment, I have 4k sitting around for car repairs. My friends give me crap every time they see my poor Honda. She’s not pretty but she’s reliable and allows me to put 1k toward my school loans every month. I often dream about a new car when I see my friends pulling up in their 2020+ cars. These videos remind me to be careful now so I can drive what I want in 5 years. 😂
