Indeed, the 30th stands for our childhood when everything is real and "intense" and after some time, after our teens, we tend to "sleep" during the years together, taking them for granted. The moment they die is when we wake up, we realize e missed the time together. The dead friend on the floor is the people who we ignored when they said to spend more time together. The parade is the regret, living in the past (tho that's the most obvious analogy). And, of course, the yoda guy is the person who we find who can relate to our regret. The costumes symbolise the inner child and once you connect with someone else's inner child, you create a bond like no other. This is all rubbish that I made up because I'm alone for Christmas.

This genuinely made me feel sad. I kind of put myself in his shoes, but as my younger self. If I had slept through Halloween and my best friend got hospitalized, I'd be severely depressed. And then the ending, seeing another person missed Halloween... this shit really fucked me up.

That was some beautiful cinematography there at the end with the sunset. Great use of shadows and light. I especially enjoyed the way the light shined through the translucent parts of the Buzz costume.

I think it was an allegory. Buzz Lightyear & Yoda... Both are familiar with space, yet they are never seen in the same movies... Maybe them finding eachother in the end, is an expression of Joel's wish for the Toy Story universe & the Star Wars universe to finally cross-over.

It was an allegory for turmoil and the recovery of grief. Woods represent chaos (traditional western symbol) where he lamented his regrets, explaining how they multiplied and made him lost. He came out of the woods to find someone who could relate to his experiences which silenced his internal turmoil (literally by silencing the narrator). He found peace and shared it which brought closure (the setting sun, or literally the end of the day of his regrets). The person he shared with reached out to him as equals and while not dependent on one another (standing afar) their shared experience allowed them to move on (literally superimposing their physical contact over the setting sun). That, or they just thought the absurdity of having people in halloween costumes being dramatic would hit and be funny at the same time. Either way, they were right.
