Does Alpha come across as stupid? Not in regard to his video topics but his IQ? In this video men's style, grooming, fitness and lifestyle expert, Aaron Marino of IAmAlphaM, AaronMarino, and Pete & Pedro says that he felt like a massive moron after getting off the phone from a podcast interview.
Why did he feel insecure, and what exactly happened?
It's been about a week, so he's reflected on the experience. During the interview, he was asked about the last book he read {he doesn't read}-- so he grabbed one off of the shelf for his response. The truth is that he watched the Ted Talk. So he knew enough to be dangerous and talk about it. The next question was what was the last book he gave as a gift {never has}. He finally told the interviewer that he doesn't read -- he just doesn't like to read.
He's not a reader.
The more Alpha thought about it, he came to a realization that he's not a reader. He's a doer-- and he considers himself educated but doesn't like to acquire knowledge from books. Regardless, he felt stupid and a failure. This brought up other issues and insecurities that Alpha has. He has terrible spelling and grammar. Truthfully, he doesn't send long emails to people because he doesn't want to look stupid. He attributes it all to his Quaker kindergarten where he was taught to spell phonetically. It was all about spelling how it sounds -- 99.8% of kids have not problem switching over -- except for Alpha. Combine the spelling and grammar with not reading, he's felt doomed.
Don't Live Up to Someone Else's Expectations
He says we all struggle and have insecurities. For the most part, we can compartmentalize them. But it's okay if you don't do something that the world says you should do to be something. You are special and unique the way you are and have your own strengths. Don't beat yourself up! Alpha felt stupid -- but he knows that he's not. But while you're in school, do your schoolwork!

i seriously felt that. i really studied hard for a test in math this one time and i checked my homework every single time for that unit and redid problems i couldn’t do. i got a B-. i’m an advanced student, but i’ve been failing tests (C-, D, or now even F). that B- was the second highest grade i got the entire year. i’ve never cried over math, but tomorrow i have another test and i just broke down because i don’t understand anything.

But, every single time I speak out loud with my peers & professors in a college class, I reflect back on what I said later on and I cringe at what I said. I don't think I'm stupid mentally. I just feel like I can't articulate my thoughts, ideas, or emotions properly. I found that when I write things, it sounds like I'm a thoughtful and a well knowledgeable person, but when I try to explain it or just talk, I feel weird. It's like a disconnect with everyone. People ask me about things and why I think that way. when I'm asked questions, I can't speak clearly because of the pressure of interactions. It's a weird feeling when I see everyone looking blank because they couldn't understand what I just said. It's an issue that just feels strange to me, and it makes me wonder why I should put effort into the things I say if no one notices or understands.

man i relate to this so much! Whenever there's a debate taking place at school I'll stress out so much! (unless a period of preparation time is given so i can write everything down for myself so just recite from the paper) My body temperature will increase by 10, and my mind will become into a liquified, hot soup of neurons! So i can't do anything but seat at the corner and wait until the nightmare is over. people=pressure. However I love writing (ugh lets not talk about the writer's block though) when I'm alone by myself sometimes i surprise myself from the concepts i've written, whether it being an essay or a story. It's just like my brain is independent from my control. e.g. the other day i wrote a 1k word essay about human perception vs reality, using some source's ideas + my own insights! that was...intriguing

I barely got an education and did nothing for most my schooling years. I was forced to go to school when I was 14 for legal reasons, and it was hell! I can't do basic math, I'm bad at spelling, science, etc. I quit as soon as I turned 16. Now at 19, I can read and write, but still feel extremely slow. I don't have any learning disabilities, but my lack of knowledge as an adult hurts my confidence greatly. It really freakin' sucks. I should probably try to educate myself somehow.

The senctence "I don't have any learning disabilitied, but my lack of knowledge as an adult hurts my confidence greatly." is exactly what I feel too! In addition to the lack of knowledge I miss understanding or getting the context too. Like I don't understand the topics immediatly or when I studied for some time (or hours) and I can't conntect them to other related topics and this makes me feel like an idiot! All my classmates understand the subject and I'm the only one who has to think about it, try to understand it and when it doesn't work just memorize. Then I hear the same issue in another class (cause they are related) but I can't remember what I memorized bc I didn't understand in first place. It really sucks, I feel like I have achieved nothing :( Btw I got my Bachelor degrees, but I feel the same way. So I don't necessarily think that it has to do with the academic level...

I think it has more to do with the stereotype that smart/intellectual people read as opposed to the stereotype that lazy people watch videos. I disagree with this and as a recent graduate with a BS in Microbiology, I definitely relate to pretty much only reading journal articles. I think the true reality is how introspective you are in regards to how you respond to the particular form of content that was designed to advance your knowledge.

Not Today you should know how to count. Honestly, it's extremely easy for 99% of people - theyve been doing it since they were 4. Even crows count. The rest of what you said are mostly adult skills you only really learn from a mentor and experience. You sound like you aren't growing up in an entitled/privileged environment where people (your family) respect your individuality/autonomy. People who have those skills and have a large vocabulary are privileged compared to you. There's still time for your brain to learn AND grow.

I'm really academically smart, and intrapersonally smart, but on the flip side, I'm not very socially smart. I try to think before I speak, and keep track of what I've previously talked about, but I always end up in the same spot. Usually I'll lean towards touchy topics accidentally, and not know when to shut up, blurt something out, or just stand there awkwardly because I don't know what to do, say hi fifty times in a conversation or mention how I'll say hi fifty times in a conversation, constantly feel the need to explain myself, and most of all, completely forget everything we've talked about. It is my biggest insecurity, and I'm pretty sure it makes a lot of people view me as weird. I'm just glad that my best friend sees past this and that when he says I am weird, he says it in a good context. Anyways, sorry for the long comment, but I just really understand what you're feeling. Jimmy Kit-Kat I wish I could sympathize but I’m the exact opposite and it’s hell. I do generally well with school work but when it’s test time my brain shuts off and I basically have a tiny anxiety attack, I end up contradicting every answer I put and I end up failing. I do try to study but I end up procrastinating and not doing it which is most likely my downfall. I am a freshman in high school and I know that freshman year grades are the first ones colleges look at... and that really gives me anxiety. And I know I’m probably overthinking it and it isn’t like I can’t turn my grades around next year but I just need to hear some advice
@jimmykit-kat3424
@jimmykit-kat3424 5 років тому
Hey @@ppmontegue , I'm also in my freshman year and I've had my fair share of procrastination. All I can say is, it's better to cram for a test or start an essay fifteen minutes before it's due than to be completely and utterly unprepared. On tests, just go with your gut and trust in yourself. When I have trouble in social situations, I'm immediately reminded that life isn't like a test, it's not something you can study for, so that's exactly what I do; go with my gut and trust in myself. Another thing is that like how most people aren't just introverted or extroverted, most people aren't just good at maths or the arts. So, like any formalism-loving artist, I guess we just all have to build off what skills we already have. I love science, and when I talk about it with somebody who shares that interest, everything becomes a lot easier. Good luck.

@Death Son Get rid of that idea of trying to be normal, nobody's normal, and in that way I guess we all automatically are. Anyways, it's never too late to try. Even though it may be hard, that's all that we really can do, and that you posted this comment shows that deep down you're willing to do just that. If you've decided that you're done with being a, 'topnotcher,' that's fine, redefine yourself by new standards, and give yourself room to try new things. You don't have to be a topnotcher nor "some other average person leading a normal life," that's not what I personally think life is about. But point is you've changed, change is inevitable, but it doesn't have to be bad. So like I said, give yourself room to explore. P.S. Although I have no experience with depression, I want you to know that you're *not* alone, and you never will be.

I haven’t been diagnosed, but I think I’ve have adhd. As a child I was in the ‘special needs class’ But as I grew into an adult I was never identified as having a disability. However I know I still have issues by how I’m treated by other people. I forget things easily, have difficultly focusing or listening to instructions. I space out and daydream a lot and forget what’s going on in the moment. If I’m anxious and worried about people thinking I’m stupid then it just amplifies it and makes it even worse. Many people I’ve worked with or have been friends with me throughout my life have indirectly given me the impression that I’m slow and stupid, or even immature. I have a difficult time socializing and making friends because of it. In summary, it really sucks, because I know who I am and I know I’m not the person people think I am.

Hi Aaron - I got my PhD in cognitive neuroscience a couple of years ago and I haven't read a book since high school. Textbooks, journal articles, etc. are just a part of my career, but outside of that "leisurely" reading isn't attractive to a surprisingly large amount of people who you think are intelligent. If you are going to read, then read with a purpose. You chose first-person learning ("doing") and that's great! There are insecurities on both sides of the fence - many vicarious learners would kill for charisma, which is probably a result of your preference to experience things first hand. Keep up the great channel and thanks for the inspirational video!

I was an above average student at first but my brain was closed down for 2 years, i didn't study at all, now i feel like my thinking process has worsened. And one thing which happens most of the time now is that even when i can hear clearly what the other person is saying, my brain cannot interpret the message, and so i cannot understand what they are saying. I don't know why this is happening and it reduces my confidence a lot. I feel like i don't wanna have conversations with others because my brain cannot interpret those messages clearly. And so i feel like isolating myself even when i wanna talk with others. And i forgot to mention that my screen time was very high for the last 2 years, more than 8-10 hours.

Please like this so he sees it. I just finished a degree in writing. I just want to say that it is perfectly okay that you don't read. I want you to know that reading, writing, and spelling do not determine whether or not you are intelligent. In fact, many people struggle to communicate effectively in writing (and in emails). It isn't just average people that struggle with this. Even people at my mom's aerospace workplace (engineers, physicists, etc.) really struggle with it and need the help of writers to actually communicate what they know. Struggling to spell, or to write a long email, are way more common problems than you think--and it's okay. I could read, write, and edit circles around all of my friends, but I struggle with math and numbers. But the great thing is, people can come together and be a million times more effective and successful by playing to each other's strengths. You aren't stupid because you don't like to read, or because you struggle with spelling, or because emails intimidate you. I just felt like typing you that long comment because I know how you feel. My entire life I've been judged for being terrible at math. But now that I'm older, I see that the people that are great at math sometimes need my help to communicate what they want to in writing. Play to your strengths. Your weaknesses do not define your level of intelligence.

I NEEDED this video, thank you so so much. Despite not being a good speller either and multiple teachers picking up that I may be dyslexic (despite never getting any formal test), I still push myself to read now and then. I have never had a video relate to me as much as this one, I also do beat myself up about thinking I'm stupid and perhaps overlooking some of the other things I can do well, (mostly because of how it seems everyone can easily read and spell where I take a little while longer). If I come across a word I haven't seen before there's a good chance I'll pronounce it wrong many times over until it finally sticks, where friends would often get the word right instantly. It isn't a good feeling walking into an exam knowing I'm likely to lose most of my SPaG marks (spelling, punctuation and grammar). This video is amazing and I wish I could've only seen it sooner. I'm sure what we lack in some areas we shine in others and like (I believe) you said, that makes us who we are Again thank you.

Well, I was special education student throughout the majority of my high school tenure. Always thought of myself as stupid and was told I was stupid. Joined the military, got my ass whipped a lot by my cadre, but I became an infantry soldier, combat medic, flight medic, and went to airborne school. Overall, it taught me to discipline my body which directly correlated to the mind (something I was always missing). One day while at Barnes & Nobles I picked up a book on quantum mechanics by Shankar and saw all these complicated equations. Didn't know it at the time but it consisted of partial differential equations, complex variables, triple integration, group theory (abstract algebra), and lots of other advanced mathematics. I told myself that I could never learn what any of this meant but if I could just learn an inkling of what any of these equations meant it would be an accomplishment. Wanted to learn physics but I settled for biology and pursued a degree in molecular biology/biochemistry. Finally, I was smart. Nope. Short changed myself because I wanted to learn one of the hardest subjects known to man: quantum theory. Got a 2nd degree in chemical physics. Still wasn't enough and pursued a masters in theoretical chemistry and then a Ph.D in chemical physics. Graduated 3 years ago. Do I feel any smarter? To be honest, no, because my education has made me realize how little I do know. Ironically, I don't really care anymore if I am smart or considered to be smart by anyone else. I've proved to myself that hard work and discipline go a long way. Along the way, I learned an important listen: learning is not something you do and then it's finished, it's a life long journey of self discovery that changes your perception on life. I teach quantum mechanics now, and I'm deeply humbled. P.S., I don't read books either unless you count textbooks.

Went to 11Bravo school in Fort Benning, 91Bravo (combat medic and my flight medic identifier) at Fort Sam Houston, Fort Rucker for more flight medic training, and Fort Leonard Ward. The word "cadre" is loosely used within the Army. It was used a lot at Fort Leonard Ward. Just like the word rifle is loosely interchanged for weapon for some reason was utilized a lot there as well. Once I transitioned to part time, to attend college, via the Army National Guard was when I went to jump school (please, don't tell me that the Army National Guard doesn't go to jump school because it's dependent on the unit) to a MEDEVAC unit. Other than that, Speedy McGee I really don't care whether you think it's bullshit or not. However, it's highly suspect that you have never head the term cadre in the Army if you yourself are were in the military but hey it's UKposts.
@littlescott3349
@littlescott3349 6 років тому
News flash speedy 91B was the 68W identifier in the 90's. AIT sergeants are called cadre as well as ranger instructors and many other Army schools use the word cadre. Erwin's story sounds like it makes sense. I know a lot of flight medics who have been to jump school. If you know anything about the 82nd they are all encouraged to attend airborne school. Thank you Erwin for your service to our nation! It's a shame people try and discount veterans service because they think they know something. And to alpha M thank you for your story I recently was called up in front of my company by my first sergeant to read about a Medal of Honor recipient. I fumbled my way through and was teased by my buddy's afterwards. I laughed it off but I hate myself for being so bad at reading and writing. But I'm going to stay positive and work harder to be better mentally and physically. Chewbacca DUSTOFF!

Reading is fine, but it's so damn tedious and slow. It's not a good way to acquire usable and functional information. In the future, learning will be all about interactive searches and tutorials. That way you can search exactly what you need to learn and then receive immediate help explaining the topic. Reading is a complete fucking mess as a human activity. Sorry for my lack of eloquence. You're under the complete totalitarian control of the author who's usually a dim wit and bloviates about things which you already know or don't give two flying flocks about.

UKposts Curates Content, algorithm is a lie so true lol. It always happens that I’m doing a research and in the whole article of 200 pages I find my answer in 1 sentence, like literally, if your article is about something just write the answer lol

I really admire people who, instead of wasting time and money on books on certain subjects (be it bussines, relationships, or something else), actually go out there and learn first hand. Here's a great quote from Steven Pressfield's "Do the Work": “A perplexed person stands before two doors. One door says HEAVEN. The other says BOOKS ABOUT HEAVEN.” Books have actually been shunned by people like Marcus Aurelius.

@Undergalaxy
@Undergalaxy 6 років тому
That was poor phrasing on my part, but he did write to "throw away your books" (Meditation, 2.2). Then again, he wrote it in a book. I don't know, this is really confusing to me. I guess the point about the books being expensive is fair.

Huge respect to you! Even after filming it. You probably did the editing and still thought that you should upload it. Admitting this to yourself is one thing. But to the whole world is one other thing. I feel like this every single day. Every freakin day of my life. Whenever I try to read or do something. I feel great at that moment but it eventually wears off. I feel like i will never know enough, about the world, the country, politics and history, computer science and astrophysics. There is so much that it overwhelms you. And just the way you got teary, I have probably cried hours thinking I am dumb. Plus there are some brilliant ppl in my life, which makes it tougher for me to digest the fact that I will never be in a level equal or even closer to them. 😪

His message has really encouraged me to be more appreciative towards myself instead of being destructive and negative all the time, but this is seriously very relatable. Since I have a learning disability I do have the ability to read books but due to the fact that my comprehension is not as “good” and it makes me imbecilic. But apparently this doesn’t necessarily mean that you’re completely in acknowledged about everything and I learned to accept it. Especially when other individuals are prospering academically it’s disappointing to see yourself decline, but technically every individual is capable of different abilities and it should be embraced. Thank you for this encouraging video it has changed my perspective drastically.

You have humility. It is apparent that you were humiliated. That is not a bad thing. Humility is not much more than admission of the possibility that you may be wrong about something. Humility tends to be obvious to others when you humble yourself. Especially as you have just demonstrated publicly. Bravo, my friend.

So basically it's stupid to not be honest. If somebody asks you a question, be confident in your answer... even if it's not what you think the 'ideal' answer should sound like. Bullshit only leads to more bullshit, and then people won't trust your responses at all.

You are 100% right on just being who you are. A great quote I heard or read once is, "The only person you should try to be better than is the person you were yesterday." As far as books go, I do like to read, but have never given a book as a gift to someone. So, to me that one means nothing. But, reading is good. Sometimes having that theory under your belt when you dive in and do something is a real benefit. I think of this in areas where I'm acting in a live production environment. If, though, I have a test environment that I can break and rebuild without worrying about impacting others, I will do that without caring so much about having read the book.
@Gabriel-ip6me
@Gabriel-ip6me 6 років тому
Dude, I like to read, but I would say that in the end of the day what matters is the knowledge you acquire, not how you acquire it. Also the quality of the knowledge you acquire is important; a lot of what you know is useful and practical, meanwhile a lot of people read 1000 books in their lives and they either learn a load of useless stuff or they fill their heads with bullshit that makes them more stupid than when they started, like the Communist Manifesto.

I've found that most people who read all day learn nothing but useless quotes from their favorite texts. I used to be like that, but, as Aaron said, I realized that I prefer to learn things by doing and watching.
@Gabriel-ip6me
@Gabriel-ip6me 6 років тому
OF COURSE That's true to a degree, but since there's something such as being objectively wrong, there are books that have no intellectual value. For instance, if you want to learn about chemistry, you learn absolutely nothing by reading an alchemical tome. In fact, you would be better off not reading anything than reading an alchemical tome, because it's better to be completely ignorant than completely misinformed. Now, the book I mentioned is not an economics books or a politics book. It is a religious book disguised as a political economics book, and if you read it to learn politics or economics you would be better off not reading anything at all because it is about as wrong and obsolete as alchemy is.

And it's not so much about reading books , it's about knowledge ... And what you did there in this video is so much more deeply intelligent than someone talking from textbooks of a degree ! people will want to know you better because you were vulnerable ... and that's beautiful !
