My grand parents fled Russia in 1911. They were Germans that had been recruited to farm the steppes. Things were going down hill in Russia and many Germans from Russia ended up in Lincoln, NE, USA. Lots of Latvians came here after WW2. My next door neighbors are Ukrainian. Seems like within a couple of generations you can't tell where people are from. Politicians ruin countries. Hope you find comfort wherever you settle.

I had a Russian friend who drove me through Belarus into Poland. When we crossed the border into Poland, he exclaimed "freedom." He really felt it.

My great grandfather fled Ukraine for Canada in 1920 to escape the civil war and being forced into the Bolshevik army. He was 18. I'm 18 right now, I've seen photos of him from that time he looked just like me at this age. I haven't even left my hometown of Calgary, Alberta for more than a month before. Could never imagine just having to pick up everything and start a new life in some random country across the ocean at this time.

The old man that used to come haul our trash to the dump was born in Russia. His parents fled Russia to come to the U.S. and they both died on the way. He was an orphaned boy, alone, in a new country so they put him on an orphan train and sent him out here to an orphanage on the Nebraska prairie where he grew up and lived out his life. I thought that was so sad but he was always cheerful and smiling.

I want to add a big Thank You for doing this. It is wonderful of you to help him out. Like everyone else, I believed that he would remain in St. Petersburg for much longer, but for his safety, I'm glad that he (and you!) left Russia when you did. In August I traveled from Russia to Georgia, by land. That was a ridiculous experience of crossing Russian border (the customs asked me a lot of personal questions) and easy Georgian border (literally just "welcome to Georgia"). My experience leaving Venezuela was the same... Corrupt officers asking you to see your phone, being afraid of them refusing to let you go, not being able to buy anything because your cards doesn't work and feeling less than others because of that.

Greetings from Germany! These videos are very interesting to me. Although they mostly confirm what I have been reading in our media before, they show some other aspects of life in Russia. The young people feel frustration and despair, they are aware of the problem in Russia. I would hope that more and more Russians wake up and realize that Putin's cruel and corrupt system has turned life in Russia into a nightmare. Not in the sense that every Russian is suffering. The self-reflected and sensitive people suffer the most. You might ignore politics and focus on your daily life, but still you know that some things are going terribly wrong. I hope that more and more Russians get aware. The young people should sit in the Kreml and decide how to continue. The old cruel warmongers should be sent home, forced to play and sing with their grandchildren. Probably their lives would get better, too.

It's definitely a sad thing to leave the home country, but it's a reminder to all of us - we can be left in a very unfortunate position because of the politics. Sometimes it seems so distant, but eventually it has significant impact on every individual. Stay strong, Natasha, be independent, keep doing what is best for you!

When I first emigrated from England to Australia in 1970, I worked alongside several Russian people (all related) who amongst others, had fled the soviet regime in the years after the war and lived in Nationalist China (Now Republic of China or Taiwan) before finally getting to places like Australia or America. Many adopted Polish sounding names to avoid discrimination. Coincidently, I finally became a 'naturalised' citizen of this country a few days ago and there were four Russian people at the same event. No doubt, we may see more. Best wishes for you in your new home.
