yeah, you could also see in JJs demeanor that he started realizing what he actually lost. First the happiness of seeing the video, making him remember his quality time and happiness with morpheus, and then the realization that the hamster is truly gone. For a second he looked really sad, until Ethan saw JJs face and started to laugh, which took JJ out of the moment again. Usually i like Ethan, but here he was just a dickhead. A bit of fun is good and all, but at the end of the day it was a living being JJ cared for for 2 years. Just a tiny bit of compassion guys.
