1) I show how I transformed my mother-in-law’s old chair for 3 kopecks. The result is beyond praise.
Sequence of work:
- Painted the armrests with dark blue paint.
- Replaced the old foam rubber with a new one using nails with a head. It is convenient to cut foam rubber with a sharp stationery knife.
- We also used a furniture stapler.
- The pattern of the new fabric was made from old parts.
- We covered all the soft parts with tapestry.
- A lining was attached to the bottom of the seat to make it look aesthetically pleasing.
- Instead of nails, we connected the soft parts of the chair with long screws.
- Screwed the armrests.
- There was plywood attached to the backrest. It was also covered with upholstery material using a stapler with small staples.
- Then they nailed it to its original place.
- Assembly was made easier by the fact that all the parts were connected in the same places as they were.
It turned out to be a nice updated chair. Now it is soft and springy when you sit in it.
The reupholstery was a success with minimal investment, it is much cheaper than buying a new chair.
How do you like the result? I will be glad to see your comments.
2) My mother-in-law has two such chairs. I've already changed one. So she put it in the living room, it’s a pity to use it, but she sits on the old one and watches TV.
We took the chair for refurbishment and installed a new one for her.
It was not so easy to remove the sheathing; it was nailed down with strong steel nails and glued to boot. We immediately felt the era of Soviet times, it was made to last.
The seat is held on by six bolts, which are screwed to a wooden frame.
And the soft parts themselves are knocked together with three large nails.
They unscrewed it all, pulled it out, and took it apart. Over all the years of use, the foam rubber remained in good condition, did not crumble, flattened a little and turned yellow.
We took new foam rubber 4 centimeters thick and attached it on top of the old one.
For the covering we took fabric from Ikea. It is sold there in different colors, and the price is from 400 to 600 rubles per meter, with a width of 140 cm. For such a chair, they took different colors of 80 centimeters.
The armrests were already painted with black paint, there were some drips here and there, all these irregularities were sanded with sandpaper. The color changed dramatically to white.
The new upholstery was cut out from the old one. They attached it to the planks with a stapler; this is not soft pine, but a stronger type of wood, maybe maple.
Now we need to put everything back together. Using three long screws instead of nails, we fastened the seat together, placed it on the frame and screwed it in place.
It is not at all difficult to remake such a chair, all the holes are there. You just need to stretch the fabric well.
When the chair was delivered to my mother-in-law, she didn’t even recognize it as hers.
3) This time I will make my mother’s chair, which I took from my sister to update.
- First, we disassembled it, unscrewed 3 screws on the wooden sides and separated the seat and back of the chair. Disassembling the chair takes 5-10 minutes.
- First, I sanded the armrests with sandpaper and filled the cracks with wood putty. I re-painted everything with rosewood-colored tinted varnish.
- The foam rubber completely failed, crumbled, and the rubber belts tore.
- Everything is ready for rework.
- First of all, we replaced the rubber slings with tape and attached it to the frame with a furniture stapler.
- The fabric under the springs was replaced on the seat.
- The crucial moment is the upholstery of the chair with foam rubber.
- I have foam rubber 4 cm high. It is better to fasten it together, one stretches the material, the other works with a stapler, staples were driven in every 3-4 cm. The foam rubber must be cut with a knife so that the edge is even.
- At the corners of the foam rubber the thickness was cut off a little.
- I cut out a new one from the old upholstery. They covered the chair with it.
- On the back plywood for the back, the fabric was glued with wood glue.
- The back frame is curved, it has buttons that attract the foam rubber to the back.
- Design solution - red buttons.
- Assembly took time, since the back and seat became voluminous and it was necessary to apply force to connect them with bolts.
- Then we attached the sides.
- The last thing is to nail the back plywood onto the back.
Ready!
It's nice to see the results of your work. Especially when you know that my mother once bought this chair.
