In the last century, women also dressed up and bought themselves fashionable clothes. Most likely, what they could get was what they wore.
But an accessory such as a scarf could be bought. And they bought it for stock. In the photographs of that time I don’t remember anyone wearing a hat, they were mostly scarves.
This scarf is from that time and you won’t think it’s old, the colors are very nice. The fabric is smooth and silky to the touch. Definitely made from natural materials, similar to wool. The scarf came from my mother-in-law; it is unknown how many years she kept it.
I won’t wear a scarf, although this is popular nowadays, but I will sew myself a poncho for the fall.
The size of the scarf is 120x120 cm.
1) I made the pattern myself, I have size 52, it fits just right. At the bottom, the girth along the hip line is 60 cm, you can make this value larger. Neck 12 cm from the fold to the right.
2) The front part was cut in the middle and the neck was deepened.
3) I cut out exactly the same lining from knitwear.
As you go, you can change the pattern: make the sleeves shorter and lower the shoulder line a little. More precisely, these are not sleeves, but something like wings. In any case, everything will work out.
4) First, I sewed the shoulder seams on the front part and tried it on; at this stage, I need to cut out the neckline to make it comfortable. I did the same on the lining. The side sections are not stitched.
5) On the front of the poncho, I sewed a loop, which I cut out on a bias.
6) I connected both parts of the poncho with the right sides facing inward and stitched on all sides except the bottom, where the fringe is.
7) Turned the cape inside out. I pressed the seams and sewed a finishing stitch along the edges.
8) At the bottom, the knitwear was stitched to the scarf.
9) For the final result you will need three buttons. I sewed two under the sleeves, and one for the front fastener at the neck.
10) Fringe comes as an additional decoration.
Fitting.
The result is a warm, soft poncho for early autumn. What to wear with? I think a turtleneck works best.
