Funny watching this as it brings back so many memories. I have a 9 year old 1/2 Boerboel and 1/2 GSD (working line) and I would have to remind myself that she wasn't ready for certain challenges when she was a pup and in training. I found that for as smart as she was, she was immature and just not ready for the bigger stuff. A super good reminder about working the dog/puppy in front of us at their readiness and not ours for bigger challenges. Happy training!

Super video. it's so good to see the process and progress. Interestingly, we don't train the stay command at all. We expect our dogs to stay in the specific position or place until told otherwise or we give our break signal.

Distractions..locations..yes. 10 months old GS, I worked so, so hard since 8 weeks, he’s great w no distractions, but when dogs, or lots of ppl are there, it all mostly goes out the window. His teenage phase is also being a problem..add in the bouts of giardia and it’s all been a challenge..

Currently going through this with my 15 week old terrier mix, some walks are good and she's got a nice loose leash in a low distraction area in front of the building, but the last 3 walks were a major failure due to a football tournament in our neighbourhood, causing her to be distracted and overstimulated.. Trying to socialize her and train her to not pull in the 2 short weeks ive had her has been overwhelming, Thanks for the reminder to not set my dog up to fail.

So, what is the largest component of dog training? : 1. Finding a way to successfully communicate to your dog what you want him/her to do. 2. Developing your dog's patience/tolerance for the intended training goal. 3. Convincing/reminding your dog that you are in charge, that you will be consistent, and that ultimately, noncompliance will not be accepted. 4. Developing such a positive relationship with your dog that they want to please you. 5. Making sure that what you are trying to train them to do fits their temperament and is breed-appropriate.

I would be interested in seeing how you familiarize your puppy with basic grooming... teeth, nails and bath....

I remember training a client's Golden Retriever on the Stay command more than the Place command but same idea. I used the long leash and would step out farther and farthor and he was amazing except for when I would walk behind him and he could no longer see me - then he would break the Stay command. It was too funny - no matter what I did, he had to be able to see me - I could be 20 feet away and he would not move but if I was 2 feet away and behind him, he would have to spin around to see where I was.

Positive only training doesn't work! Watch animals interact with their young...it's not all positivity. We have raised horses for 40 years. Those mares set boundaries and there are consequences for the foals who don't respect them. The consequences can be significant!

Do you have any recommendations for paying a smaller puppy? I use raw liver treats but because of my puppy’s weight it recommends only giving 6 treats a day.

Yeah, I chose "SPOT" for my Trapper and "Place" for Zelda, since sometimes I need Trapper to "Place" where Zelda's pretty cool. For whatever reason, the FOXHOUND is the more protective than the Dutch/Mal/Lab/Pit/German/Chow/Catahoula Mix, you know the thing that is literally 83% protection breeds and only 17% Lab. And recently Trapper's been going after cycalists and vagrants, as in last year and a half. Didn't really do it much when it was just him and me, but ever since I got Zelda about that long ago, he's been super protective. Which is annoying since I can take care of myself, I live in a Gun Friendly State, have a lot of those, he's 6 years old, Zelda is 2 years old, and besides the random homeless guy here and there, the area I live in is rather built up, so we have constant patrol out given that we're up-market.

Hi Tom. I am relatively new to your channel and have absolutely loved all the videos I have watched so far. I have learned so much. I do have a question in that I have a dog with Pica. She will ingest everything from plastic to stones which scares the life out of me. So I spend most of our training time outside trying to get her to stop eating everything she sees on the ground. I have been looking online for help but so far have found very little information. I want to work with her before I resort to spending thousands of dollars for the vet to do tests. Money I just don't have. She is a Mini Aussie/Collie mix. 11 months old and smart as a whip. But getting her to stop eating everything is a real challenge. She knows leave it. I can toss chicken on the floor and she won't touch it until I say ok. Sorry I know this is a little off topic to this video, but when I saw the little bit of leash hanging from her collar it made me think, nope she will just eat it! I know I'm there to stop her, however, it is a constant focus on getting her to leave it rather than using it as a correction. Hope this make sense and sorry for the comment being so long. I need help for Poppi, my sweet little girl.

You can do it with positive reinforcement but it takes much longer and it’s your responsibility to get the timing perfect and make sure they succeed. In this case it would look like you shiffle your feet, mark then pay very quickly. Hopefully, they don’t mess up before you pay them. Then half step back then forward mark, then pay quickly. Build on that with tuns of repetitions and different pictures. Tom’s way is better imo because they are doing the behavior not you. Probably transfers to other pictures better to.

Why say "ah ah" and "no"? No is your punishment markwr, ah ah is just an interruptor. Do you remove the extra words later? And why say stay? Im not super against it, my helper dog i taught stay, but now i regret it sometimes so now i just do implied stays for everything fit all my clients. Is it just your preference or is there good reasons to share? I feel there's so many verbals lol

Lakota is like (1:01); WTF you on about, these bigass ears didn't hear crap. That is another weird thing, my Zelda (both rescue dogs by the way) can't smell for crap, can hear for miles, but that nose is basically vestigial. Trapper is the exact opposite, as a foxhound first, catahoula second (I embark vet and Wisdom Paneled both dogs, the latter out of curiosity).

It's a lot different with your own dog. You get used to telling clients what to do and you mess up with your own dog. Hazard of the job! lol
