This is 3 men that have all absolutely refused to grow up and I'm here for it.

So this is actually not a Railgun but is actually a Gauss rifle or Coilgun. Railguns use an actual rail which the projectile is in contact with while it's accelerating, this allows them to launch projectiles much faster, but they wear out very quickly. A coil gun as the one Matt has uses shifting electromagnetic fields to "pull" the projectile forward, once in motion it won't be making contact with the barrel.

Built a real one a few years back. The rails were made of copper bussbar. The projectile was a slug of beryllium copper with a plastic sabot and the pusher was made of aluminum. Several racks of maxwell labs HV capacitors plus some big spark gap switches. Was awfully inefficient and the rails needed to be cleaned and adjusted after 4 shots. It is essentially a super high speed linear motor.

This went from "let's see what it can do" to "hold my beer" really fast and I love it. It's exactly what I imagine a bunch of guys doing with something new and fun.

The funny thing about railguns is that they range from "shoots coins across the room" to "flings a kilogram of steel at escape velocity" depending on how many electromagnets you use and how much power you give them.

Big difference between a railgun and a coilgun. A coilgun is what you have, it uses coils to propell iron or steel objects that will fit in the barrel. A railgun uses 2 parralel rails to launch iron or steel projectiles, causing damage to said rails every time it is fired.

Rough calculation in case anyone was curious; there is an 8 second interval between the shot being fired upward, and it coming back down. Back of the envelope calculation (g*t^2/8), gives us about 80 meters for the maximum height (or about 260 feet)

The only time Matt picked up a projectile and didn’t say “ouch that’s hot!”

I own one of these. It works best when stored at -200F in dry ice. When critically cold these discs will go through door panels and front wind-shields easy.

Tip if you get simplisafe or another home security system: don’t put up signs or stickers saying you have the brand you do have, get a sign of another brand instead. This stops potential intruders from exploiting flaws specific to your brand.

I kinda want there to be sharp blades on the edges if the disk (but keep the flat top & bottom so it's still accurate) and a component all the way in the back of the barrel that would first make it spin like a Beyblade and only then fire down the barrel.

Seems like a coilgun, rather than a railgun, the difference being that the sudden electrical capacitance discharge causes an acceleration, via lorentz force, which requires a non-ferrous metal to accomplish. Coilgun uses a rapid succession of electromagnetic coils to pull a ferrous object up to speed

It might be more powerful when not in burst mode. It probably has caps it charges and on a single shot it can dump all the power into it where with a burst it only dumps a small bit per shot.

The gun's design itself is really cool. If you've seen the movie called 'Elysium', there's a railgun type gun there called 'ChemRail'. Maybe we can get there at one point :D

Now, with room temp superconducting electromagnets, this can actually become a lethal weapon. But then, all it accomplishes is to do what a regular gun does, but at greater cost & complexity. Only if substantially greater muzzle velocities can be realized through superconductors will it justify itself vs. traditional guns.

Machine shop: take the disks and sharpen the end so that they are knife edge. Now you have a weapon. Would be awesome to see what that would do with ballistic gel!

I wonder why they don't just have some kind of grips on one side of the square firing chamber (barrel?) which spins the projectiles like a frisbee as it accelerates. You'd definitely lose some velocity converting some linear to angular momentum, but the gains to stability would increase accuracy dramatically. Not to mention flipping over in flight like a coin toss would cause tons of drag, so keeping the projectile going through the air always edge first might also increase the overall range even if the muzzle velocity is lower.

If it has coils only, it's a coil gun. Rail guns have a pair of rails that the projectile sits between. The navy has some great videos of their big boy model they were testing but now mothballed.

DUDE this is genuinely mindblowing! This would already work as a kind of 'less than lethal' weapon but imagine how this will be in 50 years! To put this into perspective, the Wright brothers flew their airplane in 1903 and just 15 years later aerial combat was already a staple of modern warfare.

And I remember you man I use to work out there before they started all this.

About 6 seconds to go up and down, which means they went about 44 meters or 144 feets up. Muzzle velocity of about 105 kph or 66 mph. Not factoring in air resistance.

This isn't a railgun. Its a Gauß Rifle. The difference: - Railguns use 2 parallel rails of conductive material. The projectile sits in a carrier between the rails. The Rails are then supplied with a massive spike of electric current. The traveling current generates a magnetic field that runs in a lengthwise plane between the rails. The projectile or sabot through which the current also flows also generate a field. The force generated, called the Lorentz Force, is what accelarates the projectile to over Mach 6. The sheer speed of the projectile causes a pressure differential that superheats the surrounding air through cavitation, leaving behind a plume of plasma that collapses in its wake and also igniting any small particles in its path. - Gauß Rifles use a series of high winding count copper coils that fire in series to accelarate a ferromagnetic projectile. They use simple magnetism as their accelarating force, hence why the projectile has to be ferromagnetic. Contrary to how the railgun works, the projectile or sabot for this type of gun is never exposed to the working current, as this would spell disaster. The projectile would weld itself to the coils. Each Gun Type comes with unique challenges, as railguns quickly deteriorate their rails and run the risk of welding themselves shut, while Gauß rifles can LITERALLY backfire by accidentally catching and firing the projectile back the way it came if the timing on the coils is off

I feel if it was a little longer and the ammo was specially designed for it to auto stabilize and have a sharp tip it could be a legitimate gun.
