Football's Greatest With Jeff Stelling

Football's Greatest With Jeff Stelling

День тому

Former England manager Glenn Hoddle joins Jeff Stelling to choose his greatest midfielders on the latest episode of the pod.
Which current Premier League star does he thinks still isn’t trusted by England management? Why does every team need a Declan Rice? And what was his reaction to the David Beckham documentary?
Glenn also explains why he dropped Gazza from the 1998 World Cup squad, reveals the real reason why Matt Le Tissier received fewer chances with England, recalls when a football legend tried to unsuccessfully man mark him and discusses why he thinks he was sometimes the recipient of criticism from the press.
Football's Greatest is a Folding Pocket production with BBC Studios.

I will never forget once the golden goal was disallowed against Argentina and half the team were celebrating in the corner, firstly the look on Sol Campbells face as he turned around and realised it wasn't a goal and then Darren Anderton sprinting the length of the pitch to deny the goal at our end. Absolutely epic match.

@LordFlashheart.11 Місяць тому
@kb5509 England drew with Gazza dominated the game against an excellent Italy side. He was man of the match! He was lightyears ahead of David Batty and other midfielders we had at that time. the only decent one we had was Scholes. Gazza was not past his best, hence his performance against Italy. Le Tissier wasn't given a proper shout, merson was a class player too, but again we will never know.
@kb5509
@kb5509 Місяць тому
@@LordFlashheart.11 playing well in 1 game doesn't mean you're still at your best. He was terrible in his last season at Rangers, which English fans delight in calling an amateur league. His fitness was notably poor as well. He then went to Middlesbrough and was significantly worse than Merson, who did go. He also wasn't as good as Steve Mcmanaman by that point, who was also familiar with the system Glenn played from Liverpool under Roy Evans. And David Batty performs a completely different role. He was better than Gary Neville but I wouldn't play him at right back.

Still think to this day, that Beckham flick was a yellow at best, It wasn't a red card in a million years. It was silly, but a yellow at best
@GordonCaledonia
@GordonCaledonia 7 днів тому
What did the rules state at the time? I can't recall. I watched it live and was a bit surprised at the red, but I'm pretty sure that the referee went by the book. This was 1998 not 1978 and ANY kind of contact like that resulted in a red card. England would have won the match in normal time, I reckon. Argentina were not that great post-1990, England were superior, Owen's goal is one of the greatest top-flight goals of all time, it's a glorious piece of strength and skill from such a wee young guy. Then again, it just adds to the mythology, the mad rivalry between England and Argentina, which is the REAL rivalry, not Germany, not even Scotland, I say this as a Scot. Our rivalry petered out in 2000, it's not the same now, although it will rear up big time if we meet in the Euros or World Cup. England have Ireland in the Nations League this year! Oh, baby!

He was grossly misquoted - it was an inference brought in by the interviewer, who had heard that Hoddle believed in aspects of Buddhism and therefore the possibility of reincarnation. The snide questioner then cast a classic trope regarding reincarnation at Hoddle, (i.e. that people carry debts into this life, and are faced with challenges as a result; she then pressed the issue, raising the topic of one debt being physical disability). Hoddle, who as an honest man, replied that if she wanted to make that inference, he couldn't argue, was then vilified as someone who believed disabled people deserved to be as they were, almost as a punishment. I always thought that if we damn Hoddle, who wasn't even an avowed Buddhist or believer in reincarnation at the time, and was simply answering an abstract question as he thought it, then we'd have to damn half of Asia, which is slightly ridiculous. Even if someone does believe in reincarnation and this inference, it does not mean that they have no compassion for those affected by disability, In fact, in Hoddle's case, quite the opposite. Any serious inquiry into Hoddle as a man reveals that he is actually well-liked in football circles and has done much charity work in his time, certainly since retirement. I think he has made a mistake by never talking about it, but then again, I haven't had my career and character assassinated for making innocent comments, so maybe he's simply too wary.

The problem with Glenn -is that too over-confident- arrogant needs a re-dress. His faith got in the way - trying to push his beliefs onto others - at Swindon he was a player above the league - but your star fades - needed more grounding on management- but ultimately a chap too much full of himself.

Many years ago 82/83 possibly, queued for autographs outside Roker Park (Spurs won 2-0, so players had no excuse to snub us kids). Archibald and Hoddle, especially GH, got mobbed walking to the team bus. Both signed autographs. Garth Crooks just walked though us all, straight onto the bus. Absolute tosser. He was nowhere near a star as GH at the time. 20:58 I’ve never ever forgotten that. Other notable nice blokes I remember as a kid - Little Danny Thomas, Coventry possibly? Trevor Brooking - stood in the rain signing for us kids before getting in the WHU team bus.

What rubbish. Jeff clearly hasn't watched the 98 Argentina game since. The game was really low quality apart from the goals. Argentina were awful, too. In fact, Batistuta was so poor that he was subbed. Veron was poor. The Beckham red made the job far harder. But both teams were subpar.

Croatia were superior to both England and Argentina in that World Cup, but that World Cup was always going to be about Brazil and France. The Final was a disaster, of course. Arsenal fan here, so I don't have much love for mostly wimpy, ex Spurs players, but to me, Hoddle became a clown to me firstly because of his single with Chris Waddle - Diamond lights, then bringing his religion/faith into his England tenure and finally for not taking Paul Gascoigne to the world cup in 1998. Criminal 🤷🏿‍♂️

Hoddle genuinely sees himself as, "One of the Greats" of English football and he... isn't. A silky player, great passer, scored some great goals, but he was what they used to call, "a luxury player" not a pragmatic player, certainly not a good enough manager to manage England. He just always, always comes across as a twat, sick of seeing him on pundit panels. Sick of 97% of pundits, what a network of ninnies that is!
