UPDATE: As of April 2023, it looks like DIRECTV is now marketing its new Gemini device and not the original DIRECTV STREAM device that I reviewed in this video. DIRECTV STREAM is now only allowing you to bring your own device - like a Roku. To use the Gemini, you need a separate service called DIRECTV Via Internet.

Thank you, this was helpful. Just dropped Xfinity last week and got AT&T fiber and DirectStream. It is pricier than other streaming options but it’s the most cable-like so I think it’s a good jump for non-streamers looking for something comparable to cable. He had horrible issues with our WiFi with Xfinity so hoping this is better. So far so good. Thanks for the content as we try to navigate our new TV!

@@pleiadesluciernaga8877 With the combination of the AT&T fiber I’m loving it. We were having major issues with Xfinity internet (outages galore) so the new internet has been great. A few less channels with the Direct Stream package we picked (the second highest still) but we are very happy. I was worried about streaming but so far I can say we have had no issues and glad we ditched Xfinity. We are still saving money too.

My only complaints are that there needs to be better accessibility features, such as larger text, larger guide text, to make it easier to read for paper vision problems. Also, I need a accessibility shortcut for the screen reader. To be able to turn it on/off quickly, without having to go into the settings

Thanks for the video. Your comments are spot on. This is so much like a cable remote. I think DTVS carved a niche for themselves here, and it's likeness to cable is a very good idea. I also like that the box is geared toward the service. I hope ATT has found a streaming platform comfort-level here. This is like the 3rd or 4th reiteration of streaming for them isn't it? I think they found something that works with this. The $49 refurb is definitely the way to go. I bought two and I'm not sure whats been refurbished. They're as good as new IMO. This along with my ATT fiber optic is a great viewing experience.

I love your videos! I do have DTS and love it! But I want to let you know about the recording options.. 1- click red dot ONCE and it will record current program or future one 2-click twice and it will set a series recording on future programs 3- click twice AFTER you have set rec and it will cancel the one time rec or the series .. Just fyi- unless your box is upgraded from mine which I e had for about 8 months.. :)

@@MichaelSaves I was using the DirecTV stream service via an Amazon Fire stick and the picture quality was great. I didn't like how difficult it was to quickly navigate through channels, so opted to buy the DirecTV Stream device. I noticed that even though I have it configured for UHD and and the picture of the menus is very sharp, that streaming video content (either live or recording) doesn't look as sharp. There is a noticeable difference between the picture quality when playing through the DirecTV box vs the Amazon Fire stick. The picture quality is superior to the DirecTV box. I've changed the swapped the HDMI cables and the ethernet cables between the devices and regardless the Amazon Fire stick consistently has a much better picture when playing a show. Have you noticed this as well on your TV? It would be nice to hear from anyone that may be having the same issue as I am so I understand better if I just have a faulty device or if it's simply a problem with all of their devices.

Thanks for yet another informative video Michael. I've read many of the comments below and do I understand correctly that a DTVS device is required for every TV in the house? I switched to AT&T fiber last week for internet service (less money than Spectrum). I intend to sign up for DTVS this week (mainly because of Bally Sports). Keep up the good work.

You will need some type of device for every TV, whether that's the DIRECTV device, Roku, Fire TV Stick, etc. Please see this video before you sign up: ukposts.info/have/v-deo/pJmdZ59smrBot40.html There have been some changes. The DIRECTV STREAM device is discontinued. It's been replaced with a Gemini device that you can only get with DIRECTV via Internet -- not DIRECTV STREAM. A friend of mine recently got DIRECTV via Internet with the new device (it's called Gemini.)

Michael, have you done a video on cable services that offer a streaming option for TV service? I’m not quite at the point where I’m ready to cut the cord completely, but to cut costs compared to having the cable box and monthly service, Spectrum offered to sell me an Apple TV with their app installed; they even offer a cable-like remote in place of the Apple TV remote (for an additional fee, of course). Just wondering how something like that would compare to cutting the cord and going with a streaming service.

Hi Paul. I have not and Spectrum isn’t available where I live now. But a friend of mine has Spectrum and the service you’re talking about. Just run the numbers before you do it to make sure it’s worth it. Sorry I can’t review it in more detail at this point.

The problem with spectrum for me is that you still pay a broadcast fee of like $20 which some of that covers RSN I don’t care for that since they are going into bankruptcy for that reason. I think cloud DVR is like $10 for 1000 hrs. YTTV is unlimited for 9 months free like DTVS but YTTV doesn’t have channel numbers (yet) 😢

That's what I do, simply use a Roku 'HDMI dongle' or bring the DTV stream device and use a mobile hotspot or other WIFI source. Actually looking at Starlink for unlimited mobile broadband as well. Just a bit pricey for what we would use.

Agreed. I have the Roku 4K + with the Remote Pro. I like that the remote is rechargeable, has a switch to turn on/off "Hey Roku", and a headset jack; but the volume/mute button location is horrible. I hit it every time I hold the remote.

If you have kids one bad side is there is not a option to have a pin come up whenever purchases are attempted. You can set a pin needed for shows over a certain age limit but not for when a purchase is going to made.

After trying all the streaming options with local stations, I preferred DIRECTV Stream over the others and invested in a new device. While I do agree the box is overpriced, I would do it again as I intend to keep the service long-term. Setup was easy and the device/remote are very easy to use. Roku and Fire Sticks are used on the other TV's but the DTS device is the easiest to navigate.

This was a great video! I'd like to know what kind of TV you were using in this video. I went to the DirecTV stream service support page to check out the devices that would work. They indicate that a Samsung smart TV would be compatible. But I have a SONY television with Chromecast built-in. So probably I could cast from my smartphone directly to my SONY TV. However, I am not eager to do that. I have done some casting before and it can seem to work just fine, depending on what app you are using, but is not guaranteed to continue working -- I imagine sometimes the updates to apps cause difficulties in casting. It sounds like my best bet would be to get the Roku device, connect it to my TV, and try the DirecTV stream from the Roku. Do you agree that this sounds like a better plan? I believe purchasing a Roku would be less expensive and more versatile compared to a dedicated remote from DirecTV. Currently I have DirecTV service, but want to save money.

Good Review. Have had it almost two years. I have tried on trial Fubo and UKposts and I see no comparison (I get every channel available so not cheap no matter what I go with). The streaming box has gotten more stable over the years. The picture quality is not as good as when I stream on an apple tv. It would be nice if the box was upgraded to Dolby vision.

I'm trying to figure out the system works. It does have the cable feel and I'll be saving $150/mo. by going with it from AT&T. I'm still having an issue with the phone service from my cable provider. Right now I' m using their modem/router for the land line. I need to switch my wife's medical alert system to a cellular based system using a new device they are sending me. Once I get that working the plan is to have AT&T port the land line # to the cell phone line they provided. This helps us keep our landline number since family/friends have that number. Hopefully all this will work. I find out next week.

I am currently using a Roku for my DirecTV Stream and have an issue with the audio and picture getting off timing. Especially when I rewind or fast forward on the DVR recorded shows. But it also will get off time while just watching live TV so I have to go out of the app start another app then reload DirecTV stream. Then sometimes it goes right back to audio and picture being off time again. So I was wondering if I need to get yet another device to keep this from happening. (I do have fiber optic internet. And I went to DTS because I wanted to cut the cord but still need some local channels, mainly to record Jeopardy every day or I wouldn't even have DTS.) Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Works like DirecTV satallite but with satallite you get over DOUBLE the number of channels at the same price! Streaming should be CHEAPER because they don't have to provide or maintain equipment

I watched your video to see if this would work for my mother. I tried and could not buy one. I bought the premier package and when I contacted customer support about where the link to buy a gemini was, they said that because I wasn't a contract customer I couldn't buy it. I would have to lock into a contract to buy a gemini. I cancelled the service. My mother is 76 and has used the satellite service since Primestar and doesn't have a smartphone or tablet and needed a remote similar to what she was used to. If they want more customers they should allow people to buy gemini boxes without a contract.

Yes. One streaming device per TV is best. You could technically move them around, but that would be a pain.

Michael, I have been using DTVS and really like. I did just purchase the streaming device and I'm stuck setting it up. The tutorials don't help. I'm using wifi. I'm using the Roku remote that came with the TV. When I get to the part where "switch on your TV with the remote you usually use". I get the mail roku screen and don't get to the on screen instructions. If I try to set up a new device I get to the "select wifi" but the remote doesn't work to go any farther, Do you have any pointers.

I'm not sure what to tell you. It's hard for me to help without physically seeing it. I'm wondering -- do you have the DIRECTV STREAM Device plugged into an HDMI and can you use your regular TV remote to switch the input? Do you have a Roku TV? If so, you could try going to SETTINGS and then INPUTS to make this change.

My husband is older with severe dementia. He only watches TV and is used to the channel surfing that the Comcast system gives him. I really need to reduce the cost of Comcast. I have looked at the various streaming offers and am considering switching to Frontier for internet and Direct TV Streaming. I would appreciate some feedback or direction. Yeah, I noticed a drop-down in picture quality too. But, since I only use the recording for sports and news shows, I'm not all that picky about it. Netflix, Amazon, UKposts are all separate smart TV apps and they don't play through the Directv box so there's no loss of quality.

Yes. I have a 65 inch LG C1 woth Directv stream box and picture quality is low but menu is sharp. It bothers me a little as I pay close attention to it and have UHD on all the time.

One big problem is their (Direct TV) parent company; AT&T. But for the price, better to learn the remote on the existing TV(s). I know a lot say it is seniors who don't understand remotes...I'm 75 and using three different remotes on three different TVs; two are Sony one is Roku....never been a problem.

Can the remote work like a universal one? I currently have a universal remote turning on my home theater receiver, cable box and TV all at the same time. Can device be connected and programmed to my receiver as well to hear through the speakers?

@David Halley, the DirecTV Stream remote is programmable to your specific devices. I have it controlling my TV, SoundBar and BluRay player in the living room. There are resellers that sell refurbished boxes on EBay and I have purchased three of them and I have had no problems. Approaching my 1 year anniversary with DirecTV Stream and I love the service, the UI reminds me of cable that I previously subscribed to for more than 30 years!

Pays for the premium package and baseball every year so with the current rates, I'm paying over $300 per month without pay-per-view events included. After baseball season, I should be paying around $270, but taking the fees and taxes I pay out of the equation, it'd be much more manageable via streaming. I told DirecTV that I'm waiting for them to mirror what I am paying for on their streaming version so I can transition. I still have about eight months on a contract for newer equipment, but once that's done, hopefully the streaming version will mirror the satellite service. I am a Boxing writer so I still need access to the RSN's and pay-per-view access unfortunately. if Boxing would finally embrace subscription based streaming, it would make it much easier for me to transition. If UKposts TV for example were comparable to DirecTV in terms of channel lineup, I would strongly consider going with them even though I have been with DirecTV for twenty years.

I just made the switch. I signed for a trial with Hulu and DTV streaming on the same day. DTV satellite with the Ultimate package, $ 159. DTV streaming with the Ultimate package $ 109. I got the reconditioned box for $ 50, when I signed up, which came with a $ 10 month credit for 12 months. One year warranty. They are in effect paying me $ 70 to get the box. For the 8 days before I got the box, my wife was in pure misery. Even the Apple TV was frustrating. The box makes it indistinguishable from the satellite service. Without the box, we would have gone with Hulu, for ease of use.

You can install UKposts TV with this device (since it has access to Google Play), but I don't recommend it because the features I show in this video are optimized for DIRECTV STREAM -- not UKposts TV.

I was hoping to cut the cord and just use UKposts TV from my smart TV. However, I find that UKposts TV doesn't provide the Regional Sports Network in my area (Phoenix) but Directv Stream does. My question is, can the Directv remote control my tv too. Turn it on, volume, etc.? I want to make the setup and simple and straightforward as possible and hoping I can do everything with a single remote. Thanks and great videos.

Hi Jay. I show in the video how the DIRECTV STREAM device works, including the power and volume controls! It does pair with your TV. If you are looking for a simple setup, I think it's good to consider. The service itself is quite expensive though.

We have five of these and three of them make you reinstall each time you turn them on. Full install. I have contacted DirectTV numerous times and they keep sending out new boxes with the same effect. Somehow, (unbenounced to us), the three problem boxes had been somehow (on the direct tv ends of it) changed to NO Auto Login. DirectTV states that once that happens, you cannot change them back to Auto install. The most recent three boxes they sent us are also set to NO Autoinstall. I asked them why, and they said because replacement boxes are sent that way and there is nothing you can do except BUY new boxes. WTF? So we have paid over $500 for 5 boxes of which we can only really use two of them (those that still have auto login enabled). What a waste. Turn on one of the problem boxes and having to go through a 15-20 minuite reinstall and then all the subscribed apps is just not something we want to have to do to those tvs connected to those 'bad' boxes. For the two boxes that do work correctly, we like them.

I noticed some buffering when changing channels, so I loaded a speed test app on the Directv box. I noticed I my speeds were 90 down and 40 up on both boxes. I tried my appletv and I get the speeds I pay for 1GB and 50mbs up. What's up with the network card in this box? Has anyone else noticed this?

One of the reason to go to Streaming is to get rid of the cost of each tv boxes. I still pay $24.00 a month for the DVR and $7.00 for each other box. Plus the prices are keep going up with DIRECTV Satellite

13 months ago i was paying around $100/mo for Directv/satellite dish...now they want me to pay $155 for the same exact service! So I'm researching dropping the damn dish setup, which only gets a 1080i picture, not even a 1080p picture...not to mention if it rains hard, I lose the picture. If I have 3 tv's in the house I'll have to get 3 of these remotes? geez. I'd maybe just get one for the main TV and use the Roku remotes for the other 2. But can I get local channels (ABC, NBC,CBS) without getting the Directv streaming remote?

@@ofcbob6391 put a big ass antenna on your roof. Connect it literally and mount it to where your dish was. That’s exactly was I did. I then bought an HD home run and two nvidia shields. I have Pluto tv+xumo apps connected to google channels. That integrates my OTA channels with all the free channels that xumo and Pluto adds into one tv guide like scrolling app. That scratches my itch for channel flipping and I still get my locals. I also have kodi on my shield so I watch sports and movies and shows in that for free….. I ain’t paying for shit anymore other than internet, I’m done with these slimy fucks. I’m on year three of this setup and it’s paid for itself a few times over. Is it for everyone? No. I’m unmarried and don’t have kids, so I don’t need lifetime or Nickelodeon or any of that other bullshit. If I did, I’d just use kodi.

For the over 40, 50 whatever crowd, like the idea of buying one of these as there is nothing like going back and forth between channels and punching channel numbers in. But unlike my Roku remote, I don't see an "instant replay" button or go back 10-20 seconds button. Anyone who watches sports especially knows why you need this button. That would be a deal breaker for me.

Have DTVS, 2 Roku devices and one DTS device. Dumped Dish after they dropped my local sports package while still charging me for it. I like the service except when DTVS dropped OAN News network for some unknown reason. So we're doing some limited shopping for a replacement with local sports package. I cut my Dish bill in half by switching tp DTVS. Will check out Fubo next.

When I first signed up for DIRECTV Stream, they made me pay the full price, said I didn’t qualify to pay for the five dollars a month for it. But regardless, I am very happy with DIRECTV stream, and I love the DIRECTV stream box and remote control. I also have DIRECTV stream app on another TV using Apple TV, and I don’t like the usability near as much
