I’m glad you brought up the topic of the black community and albinism. It’s heartbreakingly common that black people reject those with albinism because they are “not black” (literally lacking melanin) but albinism isn’t a race, identity, or ethnic background and black people come in all shades.

I’m of mixed race black and white. Even though that I’d say that treatment didn’t happen as often as someone with Albinism. There is definitely a racial double standard there even if your mixed ethnicity. Where at times I’m not accepted on either side. I could never understand fully what the individuals in the interview went through. But I can in a way somewhat empathize with that loneliness, cause if your of mixed ethnicity and you don’t look like either one race, how one can be alienated.
@Avienako
@Avienako 3 роки тому
@SantaNotKnown But no one said that? It's a fact that black people with albinism face discrimination in their own communities and that is an issue that should be addressed. Black people with albinism are still black and deserve to welcome in their own communities.

The other week I saw a photo of an albino squirrel on instagram and someone commented "a shiny squirrel!" My sister has albinism and she got bullied a lot in school. Not for her color or eye sight but for the way her eyes looked. When you lack pigment in the eyes then they move back and forth. Please educate children and others around you about genetic conditions like albinism so they don’t offend/bully people who are different.

yeah i have severe vision loss and i also get bullied for many reasons cause i have autism and a white cane and feeding tube (NG tube so i have a tube going down my nostril), but one reason is i have nystagmus (uncontrollable jerking motions of the eyes) and strabismus (crossed eyes), and i have severe amblyopia (lazy eye) that makes my left eyelid really droopy so it makes my eyes look even weirder, i really hope your sister is in a kinder environment now and yes i also think kids should be educated more on genetic conditions, and medical conditions in general

The only thoughts that came into my mind "she's so beautiful" and I always told her "you're a lord of the rings elf princess. You are so pretty" I remember making paper crowns for her in our girl scout meetings. She was so timid and shy. She would always play with her braids and tell me "no I'm not pretty... One thing I will say to commenters w/out albinism: I know you truly mean well, but saying things like 'albinos are so pretty/ethereal/fascinating' etc can actually feel just as dehumanising as mean comments. I used to get bullied for my albinism in school so for a few years (end of elementary, beginning of middle school) I convinced people I was part vampire just so they would leave me alone 🙃 the reddish eyes definitely helped my case there. Now I just joke about it a lot Basically what I'm tryna say is, if you don't have albinism and you "joke" it can be boarder line bullying. So just because I joke about my condition doesn't mean you can. Anyway, greetings my cousins. It's really cool seeing all the people w albinism come out of the woodworks. I mean, I think it's cool and in some ways attractive, but it's just another mutation. And I don't mean that derogatorily. Humans are full of mutations and irregularities that aren't bad, they just ARE. Just because you vary from what the "intended" biological template should be does not make you lesser. I have the big boy Aspergers/Autism. I am not lesser, nor am I what humans are "intended" to be. I just am. That is how I look at these kinds of things, including sexuality and gender. Strictly speaking, homosexuality and transgender is not what is intended with our species. It is not "bad", but it is not "good" either. It just "is". The negativity surrounding them is cultural, because the traits themselves are by default neutral (especially in an advanced society where albinism, autism, paraplegia, or many other conditions are not death-sentences anymore. Any inherent difficulty that naturally comes with them can be addressed and neutralized. So they just "are". That's my philosophy on it.

I only recently (last five years or so) became ok with sharing my story because I saw how it could help people going through the same things I went through at that time, rather than just the shame I felt for literally decades. I guess if it was said to a girl then it would be received differently as the media portrays women as helpless little things. then again, he has asked for these comments and thus would be ok with the thirst traps. if he had come out and said n ‘im flattered but stop cus im uncomfortable’, then it won’t be ok to post thirsty comments about him.

Somehow the story about the teacher erasing the board really got me! I'm so sorry that happened. Are teachers not supposed to be an example? To be there for their students and help them? Feel some sense of happiness that a child is interested enough to make an effort? Why embarrass a child, why damage a child? Especially a child who is 'different'. Especially when you are the authority. Makes my fucking blood boil.

watching the part about the substitute teacher reminded me of my literature teacher in high school. i always got 25% more time for exams because of my low vision, and no teacher ever had a problem with it until i got that one teacher in high school who just took my paper away when the regular time was over. i argued with him that i get more time because of my visual impairment, but he just shrugged and took the paper away anyway. i ended up crying uncontrollably and going home early, telling my parents. my dad went to school the next day to talk to the principle about it, and i was told the principle had a talk with the teacher but i still got a worse grade than usual because i couldn't finish my essay, and the teacher was incredibly hostile towards me afterwards. mind you, i was the only child with a disability in the whole school, and i was always a rather shy kid so i never disturbed class either or anything, and my grades were good. my parents are immigrants, and usually i would have had darker skin if i didn't have albinism. this teacher on his first day had told us he was transferred from another school where there was a high percentage of immigrant kids who were very hard to deal with. throughout the two years he was my teacher, i noticed the two people in class he seemed to like least were me and this other girl whose parents were also immigrants (the rest of the students were german). so i think he was prejudiced or xenophobic, and maybe he had a bad experience before, but up to this day i cannot understand how a teacher can have one single kid with a disability in all his classes at school and then choose to bully this person because of their heritage, when i think i as a teacher would like to make sure that this one kid with a disability was not having any trouble keeping up with the "normal" kids. and i was so shy i could never stand up to him like i maybe should've. i went from loving literature class to absolutely loathing it because of him, and my grades became significantly worse because he never seemed to like my essays like the previous teachers had. idk if anyone will read this: but if you're a teacher or think about becoming one, and you have a kid with a disability in class: don't be an asshole to them for no reason. some things are already harder for us than for other people, and sometimes bullying from other students can make it worse. it would be nice if we could at least count on our teachers to support us.

thanks to everyone for your kind words. i should probably make it clear that my intention wasn't to bash on a country or anything like that, especially since i myself was born in germany and love living here, though i fully understand why others might still have a bad image of the country because of its past. i originally didn't want to mention the country at all but then at that time couldn't think of the opposite word to "immigrants". would you say indigenous people? wasn't sure so i didn't use it. i should also add that most of my teachers were amazing, but sadly one rotten apple can spoil the whole barrel. this teacher's attitude towards me really tore at my self-confidence, and for years, even after finishing high school, i wondered why he treated me that way. it really would've been another thing if i'd had issues with most of my teachers, cause then i would've known that i was the problem. when you feel like you did nothing to warrant such hostility, it makes you all the more confused, especially when the teacher clearly sees your disability and you'd expect them to at least somewhat care that they have a student in class who can only see 10% of what the rest of the students can see (my vision is about 10% which i heard is common for people with albinism, and i always used a monocular like one of the guests in the video). that's not me trying to make myself the victim but i just can't deny that it was harder for me to see/read everything like the others, and i know for a fact that trying to act like you don't have this disability and that you're just like the other kids only makes you depressed in the end because as much as you try to act like "oh my vision isn't THAT bad", you constantly realize it IS,, so it's best to embrace the fact that you often need help :) i thought about this teacher's motives long and hard for years and sadly can only link it to xenophobia since - like i said - i didn't even have the guts to ever properly stand up to him like i should have. i then later heard that my brother's friend, who is black and always had amazing grades in school, especially in literature, failed his class because of this teacher and couldn't graduate in the same year my brother did. my brother says his friend always stood his ground to the teachers, and maybe this teacher hated that and that's why he gave him horrible grades. in literature class where we only wrote essays it was usually easier for teachers to grade essays however they wanted to, since it was not like a math test where the person got the question right or wrong. so overall, i just wanted to share my experience with a horrible teacher who made me feel like crap about myself for years and hope others don't have to experience the same thing. i'm okay now btw and will graduate university this march (took me a bit longer than other students bc of my low vision but i'm going to have a master's degree in computer science soon, so i'm happy and proud of myself :) ) and hope others with albinism and low vision also reach a point in life where they can be proud of themselves ❤
