Daniel grew tired of having to pay rent, so moved into a cave and now lives without money! But is this the real reason for his lifestyle?
From "A Different Drummer"
A celebration of those who are truly different from the rest of us and who, according to a ten-year study, are healthier, happier and tend to live longer. The film examines how and why “dancing to the beat of our own drum” is good for us.

I guess its really a philosophical difference but if I lived this way think I would feel like I let myself down. @@CreamCobblerFiend There is a lot that this man experienced in his life that lead him to this path ...his religious background ( the conflict of his religious beliefs when he was in college) peace corp , depression, thoughts of suicide, him being gay and his parents not being accepting of this. I see lots of emotional trauma going in his life. It's easy to judge people when we have not walked in their shoes. Most homeless people have some mental trauma issues that have not been dealt with or they have not found or been given the necessary support that they need to help improve their lives. It seems to me that he has rejected the way society is built ...meaning work all your life to earn a living to obtain ''things''.

Bro the part when he put his last cash on phonebooth saying warm water...liberation...and feels like hes home. That was awesome cuz he lives it. He said that and still uses money ofc he can if he nees or want to but man. That trult mean God created him to live another way and to enjoy life with such a more freer spirit than say 99 percent of america. Living homeless. Is one thing but not spending money or getting money thats unheard of. All his water and food has to be free or someone else buying... anyways the man is my hero what a funny part when he wanted car to pass which it then did and he got upset that it did shows me that was the time God needed to show him that he actually does have a lil bit left just a faith of a mustard seed to see where this jounrey called life will take him there and then at that moment seeing that car just whiz on by and than pray for someone to come so he can get help. "Ritsu Flu" Maybe you are way too young to have heard of the 'Back To Nature Movement' of the 1970s when a lot of young people joined Hippie communes or headed off to the wilds to live off the land, this is not something completely new though a new generation may be finding out about it. That being said, though it worked for certain people, it did not work for others. Some people felt they are wasting their lives just living without direction in life or without a purpose. Some communes just had a lot of people taking drugs and having lots of illegitimate children and not knowing who was related to who. So some people grew up and shaved their beards and went to work in an office. One old friend of mine who is something of an "Aging Hippie" herself told me that one reason why the "Youth movement" failed is because all those people who quit school and "Turned on,, Tuned in, and Dropped out" had no goal . On UKposts there are a lot of videos abut people who chose to leave their jobs or leave the city and go out in the mountains or the forests to live in a car or a van and just carry on as if they are always camping, cooking by a campfire, sleeping in a tent or maybe in their car, using equipment such as folding tables and chairs, camp stove, inflatable mattresses and pillows, etc etc, but from what I noticed a majority are people who are already of retirement age and they chose to live the rest of their lives just away from the hustle ad bustle of civilization. Of course sometimes it is not so much an outright choice but a person finds himself or herself not foreseeing how they can afford to keep their home and feel that freeing themselves from taxes and a mortgage is the best thing to do and living in a tent outdoors means that they won't have property taxes or maybe rent. One problem that is not addressed in these such videos (when someone lives in a cave or in the trunk of a tree without having to use any or a lot of money or modern day conveniences) what about when you get a toothache or need new prescription glasses or need certain medical care that you can only get at a medical facility? What if you get an asthma attack or heart attack? What if you get bitten by a poisonous spider? What if you need Ex-Lax?

Yes, and Theravadin Buddhist monks and nuns in the Forest Tradition in Thailand who never touch money and never prepare food - they can only eat (one meal per day) if the food is given to them into their begging-bowl as they go walking about. They rely absolutely on the universe to provide for their needs, living like the birds of the air and, in return, offering teachings on dhamma (truth and suchness). Like the Desert Fathers, a Christian monastic tradition in Egypt and Syria in the early centuries after Jesus, and like anchorites and anchoresses in late medieval Britain, another Christian tradition of people who chose to be walled up, often in a village church, to devote their lives to prayer and contemplation. Perhaps there will be a revival of such ascetic and peaceful traditions in our modern times.

He does not seem entirely spiritually happy to me. See videos of Sadhguru (Jaggi Vasudev) for someone who seems spiritually happier. Even Sadhguru does not seem fully or absolutely happy. Much closer than most, but not fully happy. What is full happiness? It is an interesting question, and a very life-pertinent question. Someone who seems even closer to true or full happiness is Ramana Maharishi. There are videos about him and his teachings. He spent years in caves starting at age seventeen, shortly after his realization of the true Self, beyond mind and ego, beyond the small self or selves, the small identifications and assumptions. He was living in the uninterrupted bliss of the eternal infinite. There may have been a few who both shared this realization, and had other deep realizations and transformations. Sri Aurobindo is one example.

As someone who had crippling depression from a young age, his story just really strikes the heart strings. I remember feeling the exact same, like my depression couldnt get any worse yet seemingly continued to push me into the corner time and time again till i finally couldnt take it anymore. I ended up taking close to 50k mgs of Tylenol, when i came to in the hospital the doctors told me my liver was failing and the chance i would make it were slim to none, and i just fell apart inside, once everyone was gone out the room i began praying over and over for god to please forgive me, and that all i wanted was happiness, i didnt actually want to die, after that i blacked out and a few hours later awoke starving to death cause all i had to eat in 24 hours was fistfuls of tylenol, so i got out of the bed walked over to the nurses station with the iv machine tagging along and asked if i could have something to eat (nearly scaring the life out of the icu staff) they immediately took me back to my bed and brought me a sandwich, after one bite i puked my guts up but when i looked in the pail all there was in there was white particles (assuming it was pieces of tylenol that had yet to be digested properly). And i truly believe had something not caused me to wake up and ask for something to eat, the rest of the tylenol would have entered my system and for sure killed me, since that day i swore of self harm for any reason, and while i still suffered with depression for a few years afterwards it was never nearly as bad as it was before then. I just wish i could meet this man and have a long chat, seems like a really down to earth guy.

That isn't true... If you look at a wild banana for example, it looks like a walnut. It's 90 percent seeds and is nearly devoid of nutritional content. Look at our "bananas". Same goes for wild strawberries, wild anything. Our species has reached a population of nearly 8 billion: that wasn't accomplished with flavor. It was accomplished by knowledge and science; by breed plants plentiful in nutrients and resistant to disease. Btw, looks like he has great teeth for a person who hasn't been part of modern civilization for more than a decade! When's the last time you think he had a girl over to one of his caves and got laid? Look, this isn't a solution for anybody. There's nearly 8 billion people on Earth, this just isn't an answer to anything man. Do all 8 billion of us find our own cave and just try and subsist on 'whatever'?

But this quiet, reflective, bohemian cave lifestyle is only possible because the majority of the populace do not and cannot choose it. Imagine if he returned one evening to find the whole of New York city (inspired by these blogs during the Covid debacle) decamped to the caves and it became a noisy insanitary pit of squalor. He might be less keen on those organic wild onions. The same brick wall is reached with veganism, those that preach it are not the ones growing the tons and tons of vegetables required annually to feed a growing family. Plus the intensive labour (backbreaking) required to cultivate and stop it being consumed and damaged by rabbits, deer, squirrrels, and myriad bug/insect infestations....I know this because I have 2 organic veg. plots that even in a good year will not keep anyone fed beyond Xmas. This garden of Eden mentality is mere fantasy for a few, but not the majority of the population. I agree we we could do so much more to improve the regreening of cities and encourage more mindful rearing of animals for consumption, but this lifestyle depends upon a parallel modern overconsumption and disposal plus a readiness to pay at least some taxes to keep libraries open and computers switched on for his blog. Can't say that plastic sheeting pegged onto bushes is the way forward for the improvement of any town/city living.Sorry.

Amazing story. For me i initially started with judgement and slowly the layers peeled away revealing a noble man eventually taking on epic proportions. To confront ones modern western sickness of depression the way he did was amazing. One many of us likely can relate to as well as identifying the source of the issue. Although his road wasn’t easy, to the weary traveller I’d say there is another direct way to a freedom. And that’s found deep within via meditation. The actual issue isn’t the exterior world (it’s not helping and likely trapping) but rather the interior world. IMHO. i wish this young man a happy, healthy and fulfilling life.
