This is the episode I started to realize Silco is not a one dimensional villain as they tried to make it seems in the first arc. This is also when I questioned myself why I feel like I am the only one not creeped out by Silco & Jinx's relationship here while everybody else perceived it with sexual tones. Maybe because in my culture it is normal to be clingy like that with your parent no matter how old you are? I am Asian btw. Though the writers and animators themselves said they purposely wanted to make the viewers uncomfortable. I played the game soo I was not surprised who Jinx is. I just did not know that she used to have a real name, Powder. Also, we just discovered that Vi's name is Violet. We only knew her as Vi for years.

I think the term is... patrician? There's a mode of rich American types popularized with the Roosevelts and other New York elites that adopted the idea that the upper class should care for and tend to their lessers. On the one hand, it's still rife with privilege and arrogance, but on the other there's a germ of a potentially earnest desire to make things better.
@ruud9761

@@wtimmins I agree, though I don't think it's rife with privilege and arrogance. There are countless people who do extremely well for themselves and in turn earnestly help people who have less than them. However those people are almost never seen or heard, they aren't interesting enough for the media and/or they do it mostly anonymous or don't walk around shouting how great they are. If there is an arrogant group then they are often seen as a majority because they claim a lot of attention, but in reality it is often the "normal/decent" people who silently go about their day which are the majority.

I think Jinx's trauma is particularly interesting because there's an element there that I think media tends to avoid when it comes to sympathetic characters. Yes, a lot of people close to her died, and she feels betrayed and abandoned, but the other huge layer is the justifiable guilt. She pretty directly killed Mylo and Claggor, and indirectly killed Vander. And right after, we see her in denial with Vi. "I was saving you." "I was only trying to help, I was only trying to help, I was only trying to help!" "Why did you leave me." She does not, and I think CAN not admit the blame in the moment. She is just a kid who made a stupid kid mistake, and the consequences were too big and too sudden for her to cope with, especially given her lack of strong support base. We get plenty of characters in other shows who are traumatized because bad things happen to them, but I feel we don't get as many who are partially traumatized because THEY directly caused bad things to happen to others. A lot of her behaviour seems like a defense mechanism not only to external threats but also to internal ones. And then Silco comes along. With Silco, she doesn't have to face her blame even as she grows up. She's the victim. She was abandoned. The parts about herself that would normally cause her guilt are encouraged, embraced, and nurtured by Silco. She kills people? Good. Become better at it. She's a Jinx? Good. Become THE Jinx. And now there is this dependency. Because she thinks only Silco can lover her as she is. Everyone else would resent her, or make her change, or make her face what she'd done, and because part of her is still that 7 (or something) year-old girl, doing so would be too much for her ego and whatever superego she has remaining.

There's actually an additional layer to how Powder/Jinx responds to death/trauma if you rewatch the opening scene of the series. She doesn't actually respond directly to the death of her parents, she appears to be responding to Vi's upset. A similar indication of lack of personal empathy comes in episode three where her response to her adopted family dying is focused on how she is being effected and not how they are effected (her response is "why did you leave ME"). There's actually quite a few indications in the opening Act that Powder is quite broken to start with and needed mental health support before the trauma that she went through. She appears to be imitating others emotions rather than showing her own emotional response so when she is isolated as Jinx she has no-one to imitate and therefore shows no empathy, while when she was Powder she is copying others empathy rather than having any empathetic depth herself.

Interesting and moving, but how does it serve the game when all you do is bounce it/kick it around? It does help very much though in differentiating the many champions and making players form bonds with them. It also pulls new people in the universe (like me - I don't like the main game but already played many hours with Riot's other League-related games). So interesting! I never thought about Jinx's desensitization to death, but that definitely comes up again later and it makes so much sense. What was very unique in your observations was Jinx's initial connection to death through the death of her parents, especially her mother. There we see she is scared and had no control. Then accidentally causing the death of Mylo, Claggor, and Vander. Again, scared and but now the control (in the form of blame) is placed entirely on her. And now, possibly, because that blame was put on Jinx, maybe her way to coping with that blame is, instead of denying it, to wield it. Comparatively, when Vander is to blame for their parent's death, he copes by accepting his role in their death and does everything he can to prevent it from happening. But this is the difference between a child and adult dealing with such a traumatic thing.

My read on Silco differs from yours, a bit, but it's interesting. I also think there's one thing to keep in mind with regards to Powder and Jinx. In the first episode, she threw what was essentially a nail bomb at the feet of the older kid chasing her, and she was biting her lip in anticipation of the coming explosion. It didn't look like she was merely hoping the attack would allow her to escape. Later, in episode 3 I believe, when Vi returns and they are all expecting an army of Enforcers to invade, Powder has prepared both smoke bombs, and as she gleefully states, "those two are full of NAILS!" Already at that age (8-10 maybe?) she seems to have separated the world into her in-group, which mostly consists of Vi, but to a lesser extent the rest of her found family, and everyone else, about whom she has no regard where their life and well-being is concerned... and as for Enforcers, they are a uniformed, hostile force. An enemy. She goes out of her way to harm them, equating the schlubs guarding the fancy new research she's interested in... who the audience is shown to be... assholes, but not malicious or violent. And in fact, when they believe that an innocent is trapped in a burning building, they go in to save them - only to be killed by the trap. Jinx seems to consider this the proper way of things, because if these people are not aligned with and complicit with the people who killed her parents on the bridge, why are they in the uniform, wearing the symbol? Jinx has never seen any face from the enforcers other than that of an oppressor, so why should she pull her punches when fighting them? This is a very interesting dichotomy to me - seeing the malice and the brutality she employs against people who did nothing to deserve it, yet also being perfectly capable of understanding why she might not see it that way.

Vi seems to be her whole word, and when she felt abandonned, she redirected that feeling to the first one showing her sympathy, Silco.

PTSD made different effect on two sisters: Jinx can't be afraid from violence anymore, and seems that Vi can't feel (or respect) pain. Vi like to punch against solid stone wall, over and over. A normal person can even keep doing it, but the brain start to push the hand back to avoid the pain. The punches by regular people become more and more softer... That's don't happen to her: we can hear a regular pile driver pam, pam, pam like doesn't hurt.

I was wondering if you noticed that Jinx has made effigies of both Milo and Claggor? The Milo doll is life size. Why would she do this? It also seems that Powder has no friends here, just Silco. Even the rest of Silcos gang don't seem to like powder much. The thug who Caitlin talked to on the ship during her unsanctioned investigation said "she's crazy", Sevika (Silco's #2 henchwoman says "She's a problem and we all know it". I also find it interesting that Vi told Milo that "Your problem is that you never know when to shut up" and now, even after his death, he wont stop harassing poor Powder/Jinx.

Not that you've gotten to this point in the series, I have some interesting observations I've made watching Jinx in particular that I want to bring up. It appears the writers dropped a little bit of everything into her dispotions. Fear of abandonment. While obvious earlier in Act 1 of the show, it still shows here when the girl with pink hair runs, she quickly lashes out and shoots the person who's leaving her, then gets suddenly washed with relief when the conflict ends. Histrionic traits - the monkey paintings, the boom on the swing, the entire 'happy progress day moment' just generally being hyper theatrical while seeking out love and affection. Dissociative identity - Jinx communicates with her hallucinations, when the personality of Jinx is present, while I've never noticed the Powder part of her doing so. Also when she is Jinx her face model is more angular, and shown from more angular perspectives, her eyes are consistently more emotional, mean, angry or malicious. When powder traits are present (when she says hi, when she's talking to silco), her eyes are solemn or innocent, her face is rounder and softer. Her voice also changes from a sharp fry for Jinx and a softer, child-like tone for Powder. There's a kind of short hand for Bi-polar going on too, but I'm a little reluctant to really focus on it, because if that was intended and not a byproduct of the character's source material carrying over, it's not really portrayed in a way that seems realistic, at least to me. It also seems she likes to recieve touch for her love language, though she seems to provide service. This all seems consistent and pronounced with Jinx throughout and you'll continue to see these things play out from here, and I'd love to hear your takes on these with this and future episodes where this all appears. Feel free to correct me on any of these observations, it's just that I noticed these things consistently within her character in way that tie into her dysfunctions. Note also this isn't to say jinx has any given thing, but they're traits that consistently appear and seem deliberate in the writing and character design.

22:30 Btw the music that Jinx was listening to while working on the weapon was “Get Jinxed” her own music video. That was released October 8 of 2013 8 years ago, and that music video came out a day before Jinx was actually added to the game as a Champion. So the music video was like a preview for what Jinx was like.

I think Heimerdinger is such a well written character. The fact he is not human plays such a heavy role in his personality, where the majority of writers are simply incapable of using their imagination. Heimerdinger has lived for a very, very long time, so from his point of view, a decade of research before releasing that new innovation is the blink of an eye. But for humans, whom in this universe would have a lifespan of around 50 or 60 years, especially Victor, who has his condition, 10 years is practically a lifetime. It also shows how unwittingly detached Heimerdinger has become from the "lower people," even if his intentions are inherently pure and devoid of any malice or selfishness, the fact he has risen to such a high spot made him unable to properly see the people below him. It's such a magnificent character flaw stemming from positive intentions that has heavy repercussions in the story.

While Counciler Kirraman definitly is a bit opportunistic, I think it is important to rememeber that she actually _did_ try to defend Jayce in the beginning. It was only after the councils verdict was spoken and she knew there was no coming back from that that she decided to cut ties. It is also important to rememeber that Cait was in the building that exploded, right next to Jayce. Finding out that the illegial experiments of the guy you've been sponsoring could have kiled your daughter _does_ put a bit of a damper on things... Not saying she didn't do anything wrong, but i don't think she is _as_ purely opportunistic as people sometimes see her as

Silco's approach of giving your child a machine gun and unlimited ammo and telling them to shoot their problems is not the best... he's trying and failing... but at least he is trying... Also I am always surprised when I recognise the voice actors in this. Be it strange to hear human Grayson when I am used to robotic Lakshmi-2, or when the black bald councillor woman speaks and I have to take a double take because I immediately think about the other black bald woman in position of power she plays (Ikora Ray).

Wow, really interesting to hear about fragmented memories, and in particular how the senses can be split up. I broke my arm a while ago while trampolining, and for a while afterwards, I would sometimes suffer traumatic reactions to certain things. But one thing that was interesting to me was that after a while I could replay the event in my mind visually and be totally fine. I slowly desensitized visually because I actually worked at the place where it happened and would have to watch people having sketchy wipeouts every day when I started going back to work. But if I replay the sound of my bones snapping and my scream, it still makes me sweaty and shaky to this day.

About the switch from "freeze" to "fight": if you're someone who frequently feels anxiety, then fight mode might actually feel good. Part of it is that rational fear (like being shot while in a gunfight) is easier than dealing with irrational fears ('what if my family doesn't love me?'). Another big part is that most of your emotion shuts down, so if you experience a lot of negative emotion as part of your daily life, that just goes away for a while. MANY veterans that I know kind of miss that simplicity - I know I do. I mean, it's not good to have people trying to blow you up, but while it's happening all your choices are very simple and have very obvious and predictable outcomes. It feels very much like you can handle anything, and even if you get hurt you tend to process it in a very pragmatic way. So for a person like Jinx, I think violence is a way to turn off her emotional loop for a while (until things start triggering her in the middle of it anyway).

I notice something new with every rewatch. You are gonna have the urge to breakdown every single scene with Jinx, and I’m gonna love it. I totally feel for her. I admit tho: I had really bad feeling on the first Jinx/Silco’s scene together: seemed to me something else. Their representation of upper class and lower class it’s incredibly relatable to me: that’s why I can’t totally disagree with Silco’s revolutionary spirit. He does obviously reprehensible things, but I believe no deep revolution comes for free.

I think to understand a bit more about the way Jayce relates to magic and to hextek and the politics that follows from this you have to go back to his formative introduction to magic, when the mage saved him and his mother. His primal exposure to magik was it as a saviour. He's driven by wanting to empower everybody to save themselves and each-other by harnessing magik into a consumer-grade commodity. This motivates his initial illegal experiments, and follows all the way through to the final episode of season 1.

Honestly, looking back at the skirmish in the pilot, I can't help but see it as an early example of Powder becoming disconnected. There's fear there, but there's also a kind of excitement watching her family fight. It's like she's slipping into the role of the audience, so used to being on the outside, and that doesn't drop away until one of the opponents spots her and the danger becomes real again
