You know what I hate the most? This whole stadium and operator vs operator escapade feels like the biggest cop-out in order to avoid any further PvE modes.

Probably my biggest gripe, besides the tourney revealing the identities of Rainbow Operatives, was Operation Chimera. Doc was somehow allowed to make a decision over his head, that nearly resulted in the whole world getting infected and turned, just because he disapproved of a nuclear device being used to stop it. Some of the operatives are humanitarians, when they shouldn't be, and it's stupid.

I don't understand why AAA games are so allergic to realistic / "mil-sim" type stories. The same thing happened with the MW reboot, they'll pretend to be serious for about a few months until they start adding in zombies, dabbing emotes and Snoop Dogg skins. It's not even that "realistic" games aren't popular, games like Arma and Tarkov are huge. I'm just so burnt out with how unserious most stories are in games now, it's sucks all the immersion out.

Best Part is that random chinese company who bought the rights to use Team Rainbow for a collab in their anime tower defense game (Arknights) took better care of the Lore of the individuals, their goals and ways than what modern R6 does with its cast.

I need to say that, in regards to the stadium, having all the operators live together in one location has got to be the worst security risks I’ve ever heard of

I don't really buy that the stadium plot was to make the story more escalable. What I think happened was that they realized making a game about anti-terrorists is inherently political, and they needed to tip toe around a lot of stuff to avoid offending anyone. They want to keep the game as apolitical as possible to attract more players. Think about the backlash they could have gotten if they had released any of the Russian ops now with the Ukraine war going on. Or what if suddenly one of the units featured in the game gets involved in a controversial situation like violations of human rights? Then an ignorant news station could run a segment about the game that let's you play as them. That's why they stopped featuring real anti terrorist units in the Operator's background. Deimos is an attempt to go back to the anti-terrorist roots, while keeping the conflict mostly internal. He doesn't really follow any political agenda, his whole motivation is focused on Rainbow itself.

Its the same thought process they probably had when they designed ghostrecon breakpoints story; who thought that sending ALLL ghosts, an elite unit of anonym soldiers with no identity who gets dropped when discovered, send to a small island?! ONE squad would be suffice, but not ALL of your extremely secret task force!

Remember when Rainbow was such breach of international law, that NATO and the UN would disavow them in a heartbeat if the world found out the true nature and origins of their organization? (John Clark specifically told you this) Yeah, apparently Ubisoft forgot that part when they made Team Rainbow and airsoft team. When this first dropped, even I couldn't believe what they were trying. This was as far removed from the setting as they could get.

There was a point in ghost recon wildlands where Nomad (the protagonist) asked Caviera about Operation Patriots, to which she replies, "it's classified." hinting that the events did indeed happen, the game just didn't.

The moment that made me drop from the lore were when the ducking writers decided to pick up a elite anti terrorism unit and make them fitgh themselves in a damn stadium, where literally ANYONE can go in and watch their tactics and strategies, like you know what I will end this comment here before I say a lot of bad words.

So Deimos just wants the counter terrorism unit... to do their job and kill terrorists? But instead of like acting as an advisor to Rainbow like Zero, he just hunts them down and kills them to I guess prove a point that they're all pussies now?? It's funny how they wrote a villain who's main point is correct but his actions make no sense in relation to it. Deimos was a major missed opportunity to really dig into the morality behind a covert counter terrorism unit with no government oversight. If I could rewrite him, I'd make Deimos believe its dangerous to have CTUs exist unchecked, and decides he only trusts himself to run a Rainbow esque unit. So his goal is to essentially cannabalize every non-government CTU and for-hire groups like Nighthaven until hes the only one running what would basically be his version of Rainbow. So he'd first try to recruit anyone from other CTUs including Rainbow and Nighthaven, and those that said no or disagreed with his vision had to be eliminated. Additionally, and this part is slightly in the current lore but I would focus on it more, he actually wants covert ops to be, you know, covert. So the whole airsoft olympics thing very much pisses him off. Ok in a perfect world the stadium just would be scrapped entirely bc its obviously stupid as shit but it was already there before Deimos so I gotta work it in. He wants his CTU to be impossible to track for tactical efficiency, especially considering he's going to war with other CTUs, hence why he kills anyone that knows about him and doesn't join the cause. To tie his motivations together and make his beef with Rainbow personal, his backstory could be an op that went wrong and his whole team was killed. They were like family to him, and they died because whoever was running Rainbow at the time (I like the idea the leader is just called Six) didn't listen to his input on the op. Something like maybe he wanted to keep the op quiet but Six communicated with a local government for information, that info got out and led to an ambush. Then he has specific motivation to run Rainbow the "right way", seeing Rainbow as his white whale and ultimate goal of his crusade. While he initially reaches out to some ops about joining, maybe swaying some Nighthaven ops, his undisclosed goal is to kill Harry. Maybe he frames Nighthaven for Harry's death, causing a civil war between the two teams so he has less ops to contend with, leaving only the best ops alive and very open to join a well run CTU after their's was destroyed. He'd be the only one left for them to work for.

Ela & Zofia have always had major world view differences. Even design wise you can tell this is true where Zofia has an army attire that's very professional with a serious tone, while Ela has a very casual look and more brutish and outgoing personality. To say they have been retconned into a sibling rivalry is wild to me. Even in the 5v5 game you get a sibling rivalry bonus for taking out your sister if you play as the other.

I find it majorly funny that over time, every new cutscene, Harry's skin color kept getting blacker and blacker. LOL

as a long playing siege player and certified diamond gamer, the lore is such a hit and miss. Sometimes its insane, sometimes it makes no sense and is confusing as shit. Like, the CGI's that get released once a year, those are incredible, and literally have so much potential for a proper story, and an insane TV/streaming series. I dont think its the worst lore in modern gaming, but it definitely took a weird turn that can still be rectified in later instalments.

Ubisoft has basically looked at the lore team and went: "yeah we'll just make new operators, you just do... whatever makes you happy..."

They found out that it was much more lucrative to toss out all the PvE and the writers and start shilling nothing but cosmetics and over hyper-focusing on the overly competitive scene.

They really should have stated that Deimos is just a gameplay aspect and him playing along with their "training" is mostly non cannon. Heck they could have just hired a double for him and basically say "Hey, we think this is how this guy will operate. Play with/against him just so you guys can dip your toes on be ready when you fight him for real" Instead of basically saying "Yeah, this is the real guy. Why is he participating on the activities he hates so much? I dunno- I mean... It's some super secret reason, yeah. He's totally a 5head gigabrain and it is all part of his plan."

Its like if the Rescue Heroes stop doing their actual job and saving people to do a special training all the time

It's important to keep in mind that the first Rainbow Six novel was about trying to stop terrorists from releasing a lethal virus at the Olympics. For some reason, the writers thought it'd be a good idea to have the world's most dangerous task force in public, showcasing military tactics all under one roof at their own Olympics. Terrorists could literally just study Rainbow's tactics, or even better just kill all of Team Rainbow in one place. Insanely stupid writing, even for Ubisoft. And then, there's Nighthaven...

What's almost worse than bad lore is amazing lore that is hidden in convoluted ways or behind challenges that require sweaty levels of dedication to find. Not necessarily 'phenomenal' but a good example is call off duty zombies. I love the idea of the hunt and the Easter eggs and that hunt should give you something awesome if you put in the effort to find and complete it but I'm pretty sure most of the fan base only knows the entire story from expansive 4 hour UKposts videos, vaguely know the story from short bullet point videos, or know some of the story and then some made up stuff from chatting in lobbies/games. That said, it was fun as a kid playing World at War and sifting through all the made up stuff to try and decipher the actual story. I miss those days of gaming. When the kid at school told you they played as a hidden character in Mortal Kombat and you had no idea if they were lying or telling the truth and you wouldn't find out until years later. Yeah, turns out they were full of shit.

Ubisoft already had the perfect building blocks with the white masks and still butchered the story to move on to public airsoft olympics. One of my questions back when I did situations and T-hunt was "How do they have Thermites explosives? Isn't it supposed to be unique?" And Ubi could have added this in the story by making the White masks a constant threat even if their numbers fell. One thing I feel should have been made were RAID operations. Potential large map (similar to outbreak size where both defender and attack ops are suited to objectives) with a larger team against White masks, and possible bosses posed by high ranking White Mask operatives. This could work as bombers were already tanky, eating headshots at times, so you make these targets tankier or have a tricky mechanic. And one of these targets could be an engineer that is replicating Rainbow gadgets (Thermite) for the White Masks.8

It's a shame they gutted Rainbow Six: Patriots to make this game.

I think that Deimos killing Harry is representative of the devs attempting to go back to a more grounded story without the stadium and games bs. Ever since Harry was killed off, they’ve had a more direct story of Keres versus Rainbow, but I can’t be bothered to learn about it past the surface level because there’s no gameplay content to experience the story in.

as a very new siege player, i thought that the defenders and attackers had deep, interconnected lore that would explain why they are on separate sides and that they actually didnt like each other and viewed each other as enemies. turns out theyre all best friends training in front of thousands of people 💀.

I grew up with R6 Vegas and Vegas 2. The switch from a grounded story of an anti-terror group stopping terrors to E-sports was like going from GTA 4 to Saints Row 3.

Arknights made a better story regarding (some of) the operators than Ubisoft themselves. They even care more about the IP of them being a counter-terrorism unit

I remember how hype operation health was, the game finally reaching a good point, while still being in that gaming sweet spot of "Too Early for Bloat, but late enough to Have Content". I played on and off until the australians came out, tiny dude and lady with the weird hexagon spike traps. Game was reaching league of legends levels of character bloat, but without 1. the uniqueness and 2. being the right genre for it. It works fine in league where the game lasts 30-40 minutes, and you have many, many chances to see and learn whats happening if you've never played a character. In Siege? You don't get the full details, and it's a tac shooter, so you die faster and faster as players get better, and that skill floor gets higher as it goes on. UKposts home gave me this video for some reason, and I WAS thinking about the game back in it's "peak". Ironic lol. Not shocked to see the lore matched what happened to the gameplay/design LMFAO. But like you said, never had a fucking clue, they hide that shit well! Funny to see that they were seemingly actually connected, if not directly than at least by it shitting the bed parallel with the game itself.

Gregor in a video talked about how he thinks Ubisoft wanted to distance themselves from the military aesthetic because of far right groups associating themselves with it. Then he really liked Solis’ design hinting Rainbow going back to their tacticool military sci fi vibe. Deimos seems a little silly being the anime villain of R6 but I love his gadget being based off the hornet drone NATO forces actually use!

When that loading screen of the game changed I knew it was the beginning of the end. No more Terrorist. No more maturity, no more tactical decisions or politics. Just a generic shooter with some destruction. I really was hopping it wouldn’t come to that, I held hope, but year after year I finally saw the writing on the wall and deleted the game, for it wasn’t what I originally bought it for. While the skeleton is there the soul is gone, and I miss it. It’s not a Tom Clancy game anymore, it’s a Ubisoft Game with a Tom Clancy Sticker over it. :( RIP

Okay it's absolutely delusional to praise the old singleplayer content this game had. The AI was braindead and the atmosphere wears off after an hour or two of gameplay. It was one of the least engaging PVE modes I've ever played and it doesn't even teach you how to deal with multiplayer operators, which is a huge missed opportunity. They absolutely didn't communicate or work together to take you down, they either stood still or beelined for your location, magically knowing where you were at all times. There were a handful of 'neat' things like the suicide bomber guy and the nitro cell nests, but that's it. There was no dialogue, team, story or anything. The university map that was gassed was a really cool place- and then they add in the same dumb, repetitive boring enemies. Absolutely missed the mark, and that's probably because they decided to shoehorn some offline content in for people without stable internet or willingness to play PVP at the last minute.

You know, maybe the stadium plot would work if the whole thing was private? Like make an Avengers type base were they live and train together, and they unite with nighthaven and beef starts to develop. But why make it public? You're giving away the strategies of your super elite super badass team. Also i don't see why Rainbow is still a thing if the white masks were already defeated, just send everyone home again until theres white mask activity again. Also sending Nock to spy on Nighthaven to get spotted and absolutely nothing happens? No one dies, no major conflicts start, basically filler. Also they could have done a lot with the Outbreak event, like, say the white masks find or develop this virus that turns people into zombies, since in the event you never get out from that town, you could say Rainbow managed to contain the virus and the news were supressed so the populace doesnt go batshit about it, and it could fit in the lore.

I still remember when I thought the 6 invitational was just the last match of the real life Tournament with details from the lore (I didn't watched it). I found it really hard how this can be Canon (look where we are now).

You know what id think would be a cool way to bring it back? the world is currently at peace, rainbow got soft due to the unrealistic training, and an old threat shows its face once more. zealots of the past, the lingering white masks that were once scattered, have now returned and want revenge. Youd have missions where you see the horrors of their return and how because rainbow became celebrities, they werent painted in very good light for not saving people effectively ... Then, the final battle would be in the old arena, a mockery to rainbow... A last stand where rainbow has to defuse a nuke before it destroys everything

Ever since Fortnite and battlepasses became popular, the story which is true for other games as well is where games pursued the live service model which was when cosmetics and quirky characters were emphasized over realism and integrity.

I always loved the idea of an full length siege campaign were you would fight the white masks and could play with your friends, but sadly we probably won't get that and if so it would most likely be it's own spin off game to get more money out of the franchise

I don't think story is a main part in r6 because the target audience isn't interested in it. Like you said, they're in it for the gameplay, and the company notices that.

Great video and editing. The lore is definitely all over the place and it really shows with all the retconning and back tracking they did in the story. But i do disagree with the statement that "lore and story are a critical part of a communities relationship with a game". Some of the biggest games played right now have little to no lore. Counterstrike has very little lore, yet its a much bigger game. I wouldn't say lore is necessary to a game but it does give fans a little extra depth if they want it
