On June 28th 2023 - Harrison Ford will embark on his last adventure as Indiana Jones in THE DIAL OF DESTINY, finally bringing an end to a cinematic legacy that spans three decades - but does that mean the end of Indiana Jones?
Today we'll be exploring the wild world of Indiana Jones video games and tracing it's history from it's early days in the arcade through to it's death on the Xbox and PlayStation. Along the way we'll cover everything from Monkey Island to Star Wars, Tomb Raider to Uncharted, The NES to the Nintendo 64 - all in hopes of discovering what the future could hold for Henry Jones Junior.
It's part critique, part retrospective, part review and part history lesson - obviously full of spoilers and obviously full of my opinions.

I was the lead designer and writer of Staff of Kings PSP, and this video MADE MY DAY. We were always working with limited budgets and timeframes at Amaze, and the end of a project was usually a letdown as we let the game stumble out the door. Hearing someone appreciate one of those old games, so many years later, really makes me happy. Thank you! (I work at Undead Labs now, and these days, we get to take WAY TOO LONG on a game, instead!)
@IFinishedAVideoGame

That's extremely cool to hear! Whenever I do these licensed game videos I always try to be fair to whatever game I cover and go in with the view that it's often the circumstances that prompt low quality games rather than anything nefarious on the part of the developers! That being said I really enjoyed Staff of Kings PSP - it was something of a tonic to the unending frustration of the Wii version! Were you there while the studio was working on Lord of the Rings Tactics? That was another unexpectedly interesting licensed game I covered and I was surprised to see it also came from Amaze!
@deRangutang
@deRangutang 7 місяців тому
@@IFinishedAVideoGame I was around, but the studio had a LOT of individual teams and internal divisions (making like a dozen different games a year), so I wasn't involved at all in LOTR. I knew that was one of the ones we were prouder of as a studio, though! (I won't point you towards ALL the games I worked on, because some of them really were unmitigated disasters. Please never do a retrospective on Kung Fu Panda games, because that is a source of deep shame.)

As someone who was the target age of Lego games when the Lego Indy games came out, I can actually say that a lot of us grew up on these movies (thanks to our parents having grown up on them too) and so we were never confused by the cutscenes' reliance on knowledge of the source material. Indiana Jones and the original Star Wars trilogy were staples of my, and other kids', childhoods.

I'm kinda baffled that we haven't gotten a Telltale-style episodic adventure game. The Infernal Machine is in my top 3 favourite games of all time. It is far more stable on windows 98-XP, yet far more beautiful and smooth on N64. There's a give and take. And yes, the last 3 levels are just batshit insane. It's why i wasn't surprised about Kingdom of the Crystal Skulls haha There are also dozens of easter eggs. My favourite is in the mines. One of the level designers left a note and signature

Man, what a great video! For me, the Infernal Machine holds a ton of nostalgia for me because of my grandpa. My grandpa was an Indiana Jones superfan combined with being a huge technology/video game expert, so that game was one of his greatest treasures when we were growing up. The platforming was pretty much impossible for me as a kid which made other titles like mario 64 or the Zelda titles a bit more accessible for me, but I still distinctly remember just how much my grandpa loved the presentation and sheer scope that that game had. Its one of the first things that comes to mind when I think about memories with my grandpa, and it feels good to know others have a similar fondness for the game's wackiness like my family and I have. The jeep level is probably one of the funniest sequences in a video game that I've played to date. Video game jank at its finest imo.

Fate of Atlantis is the first real game adventure game I ever played. I remember playing through while sitting on my mom’s lap. We got stuck flying the balloon, which I eventually figured out on my own. It took a few years of repeated play throughs before I even realized that there were multiple paths. I’ve probably beaten the game well over a dozen times by this point. Fate of Atlantis has as fond of a place in my heart as any of the films, if not more. Fate of Atlantis was a treasure growing up. Charming, fun, recognizable, witty. A 9 out of 10 in my opinion. My only issue was similar to yours about the Atlantis phase where it suffered classic point and click short comings. There's a part where the instructions for how to operate the giant drill are poorly scribbled on the wall ONE screen removed from its location, requiring you collect vaguely lever shaped items and just 'decipher' the scribble to know how to arrange them on the machine. An earlier puzzle along the same lines did a far better job integrating the proper stone disk combination into the murals of nearby walls, as if the clues weren't just poorly placed nearby but rather constructions of the backdrop. You had to soak in the entirety of the scene as opposed to just looking at the singular odd thing out.

This was such a delight to sit through. I grew up with so many of these games, and I always adore any kind of "Here's every game in a particular licensed franchise" retrospective, so you're hitting my wheelhouse even harder than ever right now. I sat down on Monday morning and just binged the whole video while doing some mindless filing cleanup. This is probably my favorite of your videos to date. It’s got so much great info and great insights. Hope you'll indulge me as I write a comment that's a novella, but I just... you brought up so many thoughts and memories. 1) I was just a little kid when I played Raiders of the Lost Ark on our family’s Atari 2600. And in fairness to that game, the manual clearly tells you what every weird shape/icon is supposed to be - every item, every “person,” etc. So there really wasn’t much need to “figure out” the obtuse graphics since I could reference the manual for everything. They even tell you every single room you can possibly reach, and most of them are given pictures as well as explanations of what’s in each room. AND YET! Somehow, with all this information, the game is STILL ridiculously obtuse! At the time, I had no idea there was such a thing as game reviewers, so I had no idea that people loved this game and hated E.T.; I felt the polar opposite as a little kid. (Yes, my weird lil’ ass liked E.T.) Though admittedly, I was so small that I probably wasn’t very skillful OR very discerning… 2) I thankfully only ever rented the NES Temple of Doom during elementary school from a local shop. God, what a disaster. That was just a waste of a rental. I kept trying, but I barely knew what the heck I was doing; the rental didn’t even include a manual. And I didn’t even know it was based on an arcade game for another decade! When I finally played the arcade machine, I really did wonder why the hell the NES game was such a botch. 3) I think I was in middle school when I played (and replayed, and replayed) Indiana Jones’ Greatest Adventures. Let me gripe for a moment: FUCK the mine cart sequence. You have no way of knowing if the switches will be necessary or kill you without trial and error. Even if you can see and clearly aim at the switches, the game won’t always register your shots hitting (and sometimes you accidentally shoot too much and flip ‘em back!). I died so many times before I started using an off-brand controller with rapid-fire and “slow motion” (aka ‘rapid pause-and-unpause’) to guarantee I hit the goddamn switches. I also didn’t care for how you only got a password every few levels - and you have to pull off, what, four levels in a row at the end of Temple of Doom before you get another password?! But: That is the end of my complaints. And don’t let those detract from how AWESOME and JOYFUL this game has always been for me overall. Plus: Even the biplane fight that you mention being difficult looks easy in your footage because it only sucks until you realize you just need to fly HIGHER than the oncoming enemies -- both your planes and theirs can only ever shoot downward. Stay upwards and you can’t lose, essentially. 4) I ordered a copy of Infernal Machine for my N64 directly from LucasArts’ website when it went on sale. (Can you tell what an Indy fanatic I always was by now?) I had plenty of fun with that game despite all its jank - and WOOF, the jank is CONSIDERABLE. I got myself stuck on the Russian ship when every time I tried to grab a rope/chain to ascend to the next area, the game froze. Reload previous save? Still froze EVERY TIME. I eventually found a LONG workaround by backtracking through the level until I could jump down from above that landing. Also, the driving was pretty atrocious. Props to the music team for writing some great original themes. Definitely felt the ending was one of the weirdest, craziest endings in Indiana Jones’ history… at the time. 5) I actually didn’t get to play Fate of Atlantis or The Last Crusade graphic adventure until well into the sixth generation of consoles, when I finally found the ability to emulate SCUMM. (That’s right; I met Sophia Hapgood first through Infernal Machine). I never really did PC gaming before that. By now I was on a Windows PC in my college dorm room. Obviously, I loved them both quite a lot. This was also when NES emulators were first booming, and I got to play the Last Crusade games for the first time around the same period… I never saw those for rent as a kid, and the reviews in Nintendo Power made me avoid them until this moment. Didn’t play either for long. Also emulated the Genesis version, but yeah, you said everything that needs to be said. 6) Emperor’s Tomb is my personal favorite Indy title. I never got tired of the combat system (felt the same way about that Buffy title, actually), and I appreciated that the levels tried to offer occasional variety to the grind. Things once again got pretty weird at the endgame, but to me, less crazy than Infernal Machine. By now I’d realized that Indy starts every single movie, novel, and/or game feeling skeptical of whatever artifact in spite of all the crazy shit he’s consistently seen. So I guess I wasn’t that phased just bc I was too deep in the "extended universe"? Man, I never knew they tried to get a sequel done... sure as hell wish it had come together. (SIDE NOTE: I actually loved The Collective’s stupid-in-concept Da Vinci Code Game when I picked it up for $12. Though at that price, I suppose it’s hard to hate anything too much. It’s just got so many great puzzles in it that felt so awesome to solve! Would’ve been better off just being a narrative adventure, though - maybe even an old-fashioned point-and-click? The puzzles are where all the best stuff is. The stealth gameplay isn’t awful, but the combat is utter crap and feels out of place.) 7) I bought Staff of Kings for Wii immediately at launch ENTIRELY BECAUSE it includes Fate of Atlantis on the disk, with the Wii Remote as your pointer. I played through both games… struggled to get past some of the brawls in SoK for sure, damn the motion controls. You basically said everything that needs to be said about that one. But I’ve always been curious about the PS2 port; I wonder if the Wii game minus its motion controls might actually be… good? Some day, I hope to find out. (Two asides: I recall the Wii game includes a unique co-op campaign where the second player is Henry Jones Sr. I've never played it, but I hope to look into it someday. Also, I actually own the distinct PSP version and have had it in my backlog for few years but have never booted it up… I think you just convinced me that I should do that ASAP!) 8) So here I am, a child of the '80s that's never fully grown up, and I'm hopeful that Bethesda's game will be a new adventure worthy of the brand. But more than anything, I just hope it gets to exist. Seeing that early footage of the 360/PS3 game never amount to anything was always a huge letdown. Thanks for taking the time and effort required to play these, do this research, write this, record this, edit it all together… and thanks to everyone else who assisted you. Love and gratitude to you all.

Originally, to solve the two 'cutscene' puzzles in the Grail Temple in the Last Crusade adventure game, you had to consult the real life 'grail diary' supplement the game came with in order to know what part of the screen to click on, to get through the spinning blades and over the 'leap from the lion's head'. If you clicked on the wrong part of the screen, Indy died. An old form of game copy protection that was patched out of the modern rereleases.

Thanks so much. I really do try to spin it all together into something that's interesting despite the length! It takes a lot of effort but I really love that I do this for a living and seeing comments like yours just makes it all the more worthwhile! I think Marvel would kill me but I've toyed with the idea of a Spiderman or Batman retrospective! I think there is a surprising amount of variety and development stories hidden away in there!

You have no idea how much I wanted this video, since you announced it. I never really was a fan of the Indiana Jones franchise, never really watched the movies or played the games, except ONE, it was a PS2 game and I have very vague memories about it but 3 images are still very clearly in my head; Indiana Jones in Prague fighting the guys wearing black suits, Indiana Jones fighting in a Japanese/Chinese restaurant at the beginning of a level, and the image that I hate the most, the Kraken fight, that fucking Kraken man, I hated it SO MUCH, I don't think I ever cleared it as a kid, in fact I never finished the game because of it. I cannot remember the game's name at all, but I will edit the comment once you'll talk about it, meanwhile I'll just enjoy the video, thank you so much for it.

Indiana Jones really did not need any movies after The Last Crusade. But Fate of the Atlantic is so good, it feels like a wordy successor, unlike some actual films... cough. Also, lego Indiana Jones was the Lego game I played most as a kid I think it's really underrated.

Absolutely love your videos to death. It's an insane feat to make such lengthy ambitious videos, and make them thoroughly engaging from start to finish. Your quality, and consistency never ceases to amaze me. That being said...Batman comes up quite a bit during this retrospective. I'd love to see you do a breakdown on the Cape crusaders games, as there is quite a bit to uncover. When the time is right, of course.

I think I would quite like to do a Batman retrospective but the only problem is that the Arkham games are quite saturated on this website. I'd be a bit worried that I'd not really have anything fresh to say about those! Maybe one day I'll get to it as pre-Nolan/DC multiverse I was a HUGE Batman comics fan

You have to do a starwars one. This just makes me appreciate what we once had. As bad as they look compared to today, and janky as they were, those games back then had much more heart, soul and passion put into them. I wish I could go back to the 90s and 2000s so bad.

I found your channel from the Prince of Persia retrospective and I like that most of your videos are pretty lengthy, but it isn't too overcrowded with information that it goes on too long per segment. Anyways,I was always interested in Indiana Jones as a concept when I was a kid, but I never understood the movies myself so I never got to appreciate it. I've only come to appreciate it recently, and am pretty hyped for Dial of Destiny. This video made me find out about the point and click games existing, and reminded me about all the old games I've tried but never finished. Hearing that there's a bunch of games that are pretty good that I missed makes me glad as I really think games is like the best medium to get adapted if done the right way.

@@IFinishedAVideoGame I feel like, the closest analogy would The Matrix MMO from back in the day. Star Wars video games really only has two modes: adapting the film, or uses original characters to explore a different part of the vast, vast galaxy. I remember really cherishing The Emperor's Tomb as a kid, didn't beat it until I was a little older but the variety of gameplay and freedom of the sandbox were really magical being younger. Getting rewarded with little trinkets to pick up by exploring unnecessary areas was really satisfying. The giant white croc scared me more than the sharks did lol

Seeing you give such honor to the point-click games made me want you do a review of The Dig. To me it's the best pint-click game ever made, being on an alien planet make the usual "why this doesn't work?" make sense, since it's alien technology. The message and story are superb, the characters amazing and with a "bad" and "good" ending.
