She was too real for the music industry.
@kyarrajohnson78217 років тому
agree with everything said
@davidb52057 років тому
But...when this song was released, she was signed to UMG, the biggest record label in the music industry. She got so much support that she started her own label, Songbird, in partnership with Universal Republic Record, a division under UMG. UMG is a business that operates on supply/demand principles. The real question is: why aren't more people supporting her? THAT has nothing to do with the industry and everything to do with the general public/audience.
@davidb52057 років тому
***** Brainwashed? In what way? Nobody is holding a gun to my head and forcing me to listen to anything. As a consumer with internet access, I have more choices than ever. I can choose which artist to discover on Soundcloud, which artist to stream on Spotify, which artist's album/merch/tour tickets to buy online. The supply is definitely there. And like I said, even India Arie continues to make music with the support of the largest record label in the world. So, it has nothing to do with the industry desires and everything to do with the complacency of an audience that doesn't think for itself or actively support great artists.
@davidb52057 років тому
***** There is a lot of trash on TV and on the internet. However, no one is going to bubble wrap and child-proof the world for little kids. It is solely the responsibility of the parents to be vigilant and to pay attention to what their kids are consuming. It's certainly not easy in 2016 with so much out there, but it is still a parent's responsibility and no one else's. Again, I have to ask: why aren't these parents taking responsibility for their children? Everyone has a choice. Nobody is forced to consume anything they don't want to.

I have to beautiful daughters ages 10 and 12. My eldest daughter is now goin through a faze where she's starting not to like the way she look and children in school tell her she's ugly. But as an adult ik that children often say things with no regards as to how it may make the other person feel. So I sent her this song and told her to listen to it, She did and she called me crying, just to say thank you and she loves me so much for being the best dad in the world. Now she's gained her confidence and she's not effected by the way others view her through their lens. So I thank you dearly for taking the time to give us this song. It's really a amazing song .

We as black women must learn to love ourselves and everything else will fall in line!

I really don't wanna start a fight or anything but just think about how people would react if they heard a guy calling himself a "True white king".
@user-wf8od5un9q4 роки тому
A white man can reference himself however he chooses. I don't think any intelligent person would be offended. We as humans have to learn to accept others opinions!

My step mom would play India Aries album when ever we went some where looking back I never really paid to much attention to the lyrics but now as a grown adult I value everything she is saying, I have always considered myself ugly but people always tell me I'm beautiful. My self-esteem is just now starting to develop after 29 years of living.

As a Latina American women who was surrounded by girls in school who didn't look like me at all, this was such a powerful song for me. This is a wonderful song for all women. But I feel like it hits home especially for women of color. India Arie was ahead of her time. What a beautiful person and soul ❤❤

@@joegoldberg8490 I don't understand what your point is. Should people not empathize with this song because it's "just for black girls?" What is your goal? To hoard it into oblivion? I'm pretty sure even India Arie would disagree with you smdh. Just because something is targeting a group of people doesn't mean they are the sole beneficiaries. Sorry to break it to you, love 😘

Sometimes I shave my legs and sometimes I don't Sometimes I comb my hair and sometimes I won't Depend of how the wind blows I might even paint my toes It really just depends on whatever feels good in my soul I'm not the average girl from your video And I ain't built like a supermodel But I learned to love myself unconditionally Because I am a queen I not the average girl from your video My worth is not determined by the price of my clothes No matter what I'm wearing I will always be India.Arie When I look in the mirror and the only one there is me Every freckle on my face is where it's suppose to be And I know my creator didn't make no mistakes on me My feet, my thighs, my lips, my eyes, I'm loving what I see I'm not the average girl from your video And I ain't built like a supermodel But I learned to love myself unconditionally Because I am a queen I not the average girl from your video My worth is not determined by the price of my clothes No matter what I'm wearing I will always be India.Arie Am I less of a lady if I don't wear panty hose My momma said a lady ain't what she wears but what she knowsâ?¦ But I've drawn the conclusion, it's all an illusion Confusion's the name of the game A misconception, a mass deception, Something gotta change Now don't be offended this is all my opinion Ain't nothing that I'm saying law This is a true confession Of a life learned lesson I was sent here to share with y'all So get in when you fit in Go on and shine Clear your mind Now's the time Put your salt on the shelf Go on and love yourself Cause everything's gonna be alright I'm not the average girl from your video And I ain't built like a supermodel But I learned to love myself unconditionally Because I am a queen I not the average girl from your video My worth is not determined by the price of my clothes No matter what I'm wearing I will always be India.Arie Keep your fancy drink, and your expensive minks I don't need that to have a good time Keep your expensive cars and your caviar All I need is my guitar Keep your crystal and your pistol I'd rather have a pretty piece of crystal Don't need you silicone, I prefer my own What god gave me is just fine I'm not the average girl from your video And I ain't built like a supermodel But I learned to love myself unconditionally Because I am a queen I not the average girl from your video My worth is not determined by the price of my clothes No matter what I'm wearing I will always be India.Arie
