In the heart of the Daniel Boone Forest, we took one of our yearly adventures and we found some Indian Pipe on our waterfall hiking trip. Did you know it's a perennial? Adam talks about this and other facts about it along with uses for this hard-to-find medicinal plant.

I just wanted to add one thing. Indian Pipe grows near Beech, and Pine Trees. And yes, after a dry spell, and then some rain, you will also find mushrooms. Specifically, Russulaceae mushrooms. Russula, and Lactarius mushrooms are in the Russulaceae family. These mushrooms have colored caps, no veil on the stem, the Russula mushrooms are brittle, and the Lactarius mushrooms leak a milky substance from the gills. The trees push nutrients into the soil, which the mushrooms use for food. The mushrooms also add nutrients and minerals to the soil, which the Indian Pipe uses for food. Without this triad of plants, the Indian Pipe plant, can not, and will not grow. That s why it will some years, it will grow back n the same place, and some years, it won't, and why, if you try to transplant it somewhere else, it will not grow. Without the trees and the mushrooms, and the connection between them, that kind of environment is very difficult, if not impossible, to recreate. Best to just find them in the woods, and pick them after the seeds are dispersed.

Thank you for this information. In the place that I grow, those trees don’t grow very naturally. They only grow if imported and planted, and generally Do not spread without a whole lot of help. But we do Get Indian pipe growing here. So that tells me that the nutrients that you get from the vegetation that you named, Probably have some sort of analogous species here that provide those same nutrients. That could be very valuable to know, particularly if a person is hoping to nurture a few more of them. It’s not always so easy to find them in this neck of the woods.

Hey brother, as a medical bachelor I can tell you anxiety amplifies pain immeasurably. This is one reason why we administer strong nerve medicines when putting someone in a twilight for uncomfortable procedures. To keep them calm. This could be extremely useful as an alternative for more addictive drugs.

Because of the alcohol tinctures will last for years and not go bad and you don't have to worry about leaving the plant in the alcohol for too long. Mine stayed in the alcohol for a few months before I strained it and have heard of herbalists leaving it in almost indefinitely and just taking from it as needed though I don't think I would do that. I used the 1/2 ounce bottles so easier to share. Thanks so much for taking it and describing the effects, I have not heard about the pain benefits, just the anti psychotic benefits so I am excited to learn this and now I'm not afraid to try it. I suffer from chronic pain and so always looking for natural remedies. Thanks for catching a little buzz(?) for my sake, I feel better about it now.

Daaaayyuummm! You’ve had a trauma-induced migraine headache for more than TWENTY YEARS??! God,that’s so awful! And nothing, absolutely NOTHING has worked for you? Is there any product that,at least,REDUCES the painful symptoms? I get these bad cluster headaches,OCCASIONALLY,and they last for up to five days, sometimes but, thankfully,it’s not CONSTANT. I was involved in an auto/tractor trailer accident and received injuries to my back so,I’m familiar with chronic pain, overall. Been through a few Neurologists,a Neurosurgeon and several G.P.’s and the meds to go with. Taken the prescribed MS Contin (morphine),used the fentanyl patches (they fall off after first day…garbage) and now on OxyContin (synthetic or semisynthetic heroin) yet,for my headaches, these are not as effective for me as regular ol’ ibuprofen. Gotta take 4-6 but, after some time,I find improvement in my condition. Odd,isn’t it? Anyway, hope you find some relief and may God bless you and your family. I’m kinda interested in trying this Indian Pipe, too. Getting tired of taking all of these pills.

Myles, I’m sorry you’ve got chronic pain, too. Yeah, they’ve tried everything for the migraine, including Botox injections for 3.5 years. Nothing gets rid of it. Fortunately, the baseline is about a 4/10 on the pain scale, so at least I can function most of the time. On days where it spikes to 7 or more, I can’t do anything that requires concentration because I will definitely screw it up. I take either ibuprofen or acetaminophen when it spikes. It helps make it somewhat tolerable anyway. So I’m very intrigued by the Indian pipe. I’ll definitely be trying it out.

I encourage you both to study the bodies lymphatic system and research into the lymphatic drainage massage techniques. One I've stumbled upon and found to be very heopful is deep throat swallowing exercises and specifically how these exercises relates to the drainage and overall function of the cervical lymph nodes. Strong implications will come from the further understanding of them, I can assure you. The brain has a somewhat separate system from the venous lymphatic system that is used for toxin removal from the cranial tissue via its connection to the cerebrospinal fluid that's in the meningeal space. It's system is called the "glymphatic system". This little tidbit of info if you choose to follow it through some independent research should help you both to better understand your underlying issues and how to resolve it. Remember "knowledge is power". GOD BLESS YOU BOTH. I PRAY THE LORD GUIDE YOU TO SALVATION BOTH FOR THIS LIFE AS WELL AS INTO THE NEXT. I ask the Lord to help us to better love one another. In doing that as we've clearly here, I pray that He helps others to see that making a change for the better starts with us being the change we wanted to see in the world. AMEN! GOD SPEED!

Moonshine is and has always been most of the people from this areas go-to medicine for chest colds, caughs, congestion, as a sleep aid, etc. Hottie Totties! Always used in a responsible manner when used for medicinal purposes. Don't get me wrong that clear is also enjoyed for private use by some as well! I've always been a fan of Absolute Vodka straight no mixers, although only behind shine which is of course a favorite to most around here!

I also find I have to dose myself as soon as it pops up yet a constant low dose can deal with persistent pain. I have CFS- 24/7 pain and frequent anxiety. I only managed to get out for pipe twice. First off thank you for the information, it was valuable. I would like to say that you need to have a better filtration system, perhaps get a tincture press & then filter through unbleached coffee filters. I say this because you absolutely need to squeeze the marc (the leftover herbs from the tincture) because it's holding some of the strongest part of the tincture in it. This should be done with any tincture. I'm an herbalist by the way.

I live in New England and I wondered what those things were. I've deff seen them on my journey's in New Hampshire. I've filtered other things. A good tip is to wet the cloth a little where your filtering it through with a little water. So you get all of what your filtering, it absorb into the cloth because it's already wet. But it's not a big deal. Just my 2 cents for what it's worth. "A spoon full of honey makes the medicines go down" lmao
