"Everyone feels like a fraud and that's fine. There's no problem." "That's the way creatives work." I knew about imposter syndrome but it was a revelation to hear someone I admire, so confidently say we all feel this way.

He who has a why to live for can bear almost any how. ~ Friedrich Nietzsche
@Vanirvis3 роки тому
I thought that quote was attributed to Victor E Frankl
@integralyogin3 роки тому
@@Vanirvis 'There is much wisdom in the words of Nietzsche: "He who has a why to live for can bear almost any how." I can see in these words a motto which holds true for any psychotherapy. In the Nazi concentration camps, one could have witnessed that those who knew that there was a task waiting for them to fulfill were most apt to survive.' ~ Viktor E Frankl the source by Nietzsche is from "Twilight of the Idols". though the line in english is a translation and may have been originally translated as such by Frankl.

My reason for making games is that I want to make games that I want to play. Right now, I'm figuring out 3d graphics because I don't have enough money to buy Devil Daggers, but I still want to play it, so I'm making my own personal Devil Daggers. What then, should I do if play testers respond negatively to what you consider to be the most fun part of the game?
@TheKocon133 роки тому
If you're still searching for answers, first step is to acknowledge it, and let them know they're being heard. Then ask what they don't like and why, so you'll have to think about it. If you've reached the conclusion that it's because of taste, you can ignore it. If they aren't engaged with it, it could be stuff like it doesn't feel juicy and fun yet (a shooter with no sound isn't fun, or no effects when shooting the gun or hitting an enemy), so you need to put in more effort towards stuff like that. If players aren't made aware of systems within you're game, find ways to inform them; if you have a combo system, show it and make it juicy. Currently I'm still trying to make games now after listening to many talks, but Vlambeer and Grapefrkt talks about juice make you realise when you make a tiny portion of your game (just the actions players make), make that the most sensual and exciting part. If you're making a shooter with 3 enemies in an arena: make the guns loud, drop bullet shells, and have noticeable muzzle flash; show enemies staggering in response, splatter with blood, and make stains on the floor; make the player's movement noticeable with footsteps, head bob, sounds when jumping, crouching, sliding and sprinting. Whatever you can do in the game, make that sound and feel better.

I'm really narked off that their fishing game (which I own and I loved playing) got cloned. In fact I wonder if I bought the clone version. Did they ever recoup their money legally ? I think Polygon did an article about it, I'm going to dig it out.
how did the other company get radical fishing to sell? they made it from scratch?
@HW-ct1iq7 років тому
Yes, I assume so. But it seems they were riding off the back of the success of Vlambeer's original game.

@86Corvus6 років тому
The whole talk about game maker and going where the game takes you and not making the game in your head because computers dont work like that... it all means to me that they develop games lazily, meaning they stop when something is hard, when theres a technical limitation they work it into the game instead of trying to brake that limitation and go past it. Which may be actually a good way to make games on a low budgetif you manage to make them look like they have some value but i dont think is a rule rule...

1:07:00 He had to delve into identitarianism. Don't handicap yourself over superficial guilt. There are people born with horrible disabilities, but we don't insult them by handicapping ourselves to match them. Life happens. Someone can be a refugee from a country with a poor education system, or be someone from an abusive household. Got me angry this did.
@LTSlugg3 роки тому
I think he was more or less making a statement about how his Identity influenced his life more than he perceived. Not everywhere is the same, some places choose to avoid hiring minorities over other. But honestly some places choose to hire minorities over whites. Im a first generation american hispanic male from my family.

@boredfangerrude6 років тому
I have to disagree a bit, some things are not games no matter how you spin it. For example, a "game" which is eighty percent cut scenes and twenty percent gameplay, you are not really playing but semi interacting with a movie.

Despite there being a few decent pieces of advice, he lost all credibility when he started suggesting the industry was exclusive toward women at around 1hr 5mins. How would a field exclusive toward women have as their most Publicly Recognizable figure for over 20 consecutive years Be a Woman? From her earliest works for the Apple series until long after she was out of the industry, ROBERTA WILLIAMS was the only developer most people in the public could name. If you want to try to explain to people like Bonnie Ross (HALO) and Kim Swift (Portal, Left 4 Dead, etc), and all the other women behind the most popular franchises in games that they aren't supposed to be there, by all means, try - but please record it so we can all laugh along with them as they openly mock your ignorance. Nothing in the game industry is exclusive toward women. No development house rejects women. Some actually Do reject men, but that's for another discussion. The only thing that might keep a woman with dreams of creating games from doing so -- is people as ignorant as this guy who would tell her she can't because it is a "male" field. And that is why I take such issue with his suggestion that it is the case. Not because he's wrong - which he so obviously is, but because of the harm he may do to those listening to him as a 'credible' source if they believe that his nonsensical suggestion is actually found in the industry itself. -- Here's a clue. The game industry doesn't care what's in your pants, who you're sleeping with at home, or what your politics are. They care what skills and ideas you bring to the table and how much profit they can make from both.
@Hepabytes6 років тому
Yeah that bugged me. I really enjoyed it aside from the SJW crap at the end.
