Safety Note: The pressure required for inflating 1mm thick steel sheet is relatively low. As water cannot be compressed, the energy released from a rupture is roughly the same as using a regular pressure washer attachment. I always wear a face shield and stay at least 2m away during Hydroforming. When using compressed air for 'Aeroforming', I use very low pressure that is equivalent to a few strokes of a bicycle pump. I never use pressure high enough to rupture any pieces. I always revert back to Hydroforming if a piece needs more pressure to inflate fully, making sure there is no air left inside that can be compressed. I am aware of the potential risks, and always follow the necessary safety precautions.

I've seen this done with a small explosives charge in creating large tanks like the ball for storage. I'd never thought of using water but its density means a lot less air pressure would be needed to get similar results on a small scale I would imagine. Very cool.

I beg to differ, expansion chambers for 2 stroke engines need to have good base material, have their joints fully welded with proper penetration and should not leak. Just wondering what/how could this be used in practical situations? It's very interesting.

Brilliant stuff…wonder if this could be employed to make a 2t exhaust and how would the pattern be to make the finished exhaust? I did some welding back in college and mine was leaking on just filling it up before any pressure was applied! So hats off for the quality welding!

The width of the pattern is half the circumference (Radius x Pi) of the finished part you want. Curves get tighter as a piece inflates, so add 5-10 degrees to angles when drawing the pattern. TIG welding is the best process to use, as MIG is messy and more likely to create lots of pinholes.

Can someone give me a really good example of something you could make with this method that would be really hard with any other technique

Any kind of one-off fuel cell will be an absolute pain to make conventionally. It's also used on an industrial scale, in conjunction with dies, to make some automotive frame components. The water pressure forms the metal into the complex die geometries with little trouble.

Good welding seams!!!
@DemonetizedVet
@DemonetizedVet 3 роки тому
If he would put more heat and flow more evenly across the work piece the HAZ would be even more parallel and he wouldn't have virtually any leaks at all. Another helpful tip before doing any forming retemp to about 150 or so and it will help the seams transfer better and cause less stress so even better chance they won't fracture. Metallurgy is amazing

@@DemonetizedVet Thanks, but what is HAZ
@DemonetizedVet
@DemonetizedVet 3 роки тому
@@JereYaps I'm not being rude or anything with today's society I just wanted that out there haha, So the HAZ is the Heat effected zone. If you mig or tig this is very easy to control due to the very small changes welders can make on the fly after a test run. Plus every "run or lot" or produced metel will react and behave different due to this factor so if extra scrap is around run it on there and check the HAZ and see how it spreads outward from the joints welded

The temper colors... Makes sense, that's a lot of work getting put into bending those welds out. That's a really ingenious concept that has great art potential for sure, but I think this idea could be very useful in tight conditions.
@iSlantyEyeZ
@iSlantyEyeZ 3 роки тому
your edges are too sharp to create smooth transitions, the sharpness also helps them welds split when the angle increases due to rapid inflation.. could probably get a way stronger end product with that one simple change to design
