In Taiji, Japan, the dolphin hunting industry has shifted from killing dolphins for their meat to a more lucrative, but equally controversial industry-the capture of live animals for overseas "dolphin shows."
In this video, VICE World News travels to the town made infamous in the Oscar-winning documentary “The Cove” with Ren Yabuki, the director of Life Investigation Agency, a Japanese animal rights NGO and the only group tasked with monitoring this year’s dolphin hunts.

In Ancient Greece eating dolphins is akin to cannibalism. Dolphins are known to go out of their way to save humans. It’s sad how some of our species treat our watery friends.

Would I feel sorry for a man trapped in a large room? Yes. Yes I would. You're taking the freedom away from a person who is used to going to work and overall living their daily life. The problem with the way dolphins and small wales are kept is the fact that they don't get enrichment, nor is it anywhere close to their natural environment where they swim hundreds of miles a day. Even your average zoo in most countries will have regulations and laws on how to ensure that the animal has the ability to perform their natural behaviours (often through enrichment) and the most dolphins have is some trainer blowing a whistle or asking them to perform behaviours they wouldn't in the wild.

Seaspiracy isn't actually so accurate, even if the message of the documentary is good. There are some fake news and inaccurate informations, it's a bit misleading. For example, the fact that japanese hunt dolphins in order to have more tunas doesn't make sense, because dolphins don't eat tuna, they eat almost only smaller fishes. What makes unnecessary killing wrong/unethical? The fact that you're going against a sentient being's will to live & emotions. Intelligence, breeding or species don't matter. For all the people making comparisons between killing/capturing dolphins and eating cows/pigs/ chickens: There is nothing wrong with eating meat. It is a called the food chain/nature and is a reliable source of protein. It is however very important where this meat comes from. Cows, pigs, chickens are farmed for food, in most western countries in a humane manner, and then killed, also in a humane manner, to be food for people. They have been domesticated and are not wild, therefore don’t suffer in captivity. Dolphins caught in the wild, disrupting the social structures of these very intelligent and complicated animals, to either be killed very inhumanly or the be kept in aquariums (it has been proven that whales and dolphins don’t do well in captivity), is complete wrong. So comparing the two doesn’t make any sense.
@SachiraBhanu
@SachiraBhanu Рік тому
Before domesticating cows or pigs, all animals consider as animals. We selectively choose some species and breed domestically as our food. It's weird right ? If every animal have the right to live in nature freely. Why we captivate them and breed them forcefully ? Every slaughter house is bad. Nothing ethical or justification behind that. Don't try to justify killing is cool and right for domesticated animals but it's wrong to kill wild animals. Also we eat all kind of fish and seafood. We don't breed them in farms or domesticated as our food. So, killing all kind of fish must be wrong. We can't just select some species over others.

Wow… i cried the second I saw the first dolphin being slaughtered. This is beyond heartbreaking for me. This is like killing people, as dolphins are just as conscious and sophisticated as we are… if not more so as we have yet to learn their vast language. Are the police somehow involved? Why are they chasing off the only people with working hearts(people who actually care for the beings we share this planet with)? They complained that he might film something illegal. Isn’t that good? If something illegal happens and somebody has it on film, that’s evidence! They should be thanking him. Why do the police harass people on the right side of this? Are they being paid by the dolphin killers? This is such a crime.. in so many ways. My only rejoice is that people ALWAYS reap what they sew. I hope that they reap their consequences sooner rather than later…

In Japan , they respect the lives they take for food... The hunters have shown they have absolutely zero respect for the dolphins they slaughter. They run over them with skiffs causing injury , they have been heard laughing as they kill, they have been seen hitting the dolphins etc..... if that is their version of respect then they are sadly lacking!! As for the rant of the fisherman, it is illegal to take the humpback whale.. He was clearly frustrated and obviously was angry because he could not commit an illegal act due to Ren's diligence. The hunters/fishermen seem to think they are above the law by the looks of it. Why do only certain animals get preferential treatment/protection from greater society? What about the billions of chickens, cows, pigs, and etc, that are slaughtered (in more inhumane ways) and consumed every year? While the ethics of eating meat in general certainly should be questioned, there are a number of ecological and ethical issues to dolphin farming that go beyond eating any animal for food. From the ecological standpoint, humans domesticated livestock since the dawn of humanity specifically for eating, and we ourselves evolved to eat them. That means that, as far as eating meat goes, there's minimum ecological impact associated with eating farm animals, and most domesticated livestock species will go extinct if humans had no incentive to farm them. On the other hand, Ocean ecosystems are difficult to observe and we have no idea how to calculate the grander ecological impact of killing several pods of dolphins a year. Not to mention dolphin pods have their own separate cultures passed down through the generations, so each one plays an irreplaceable role in their local ecosystem. From a economic standpoint, farmers put their own resources into their produces, which is regulated. These fisherman pay lipservice to respecting their prey (in an extremely racist way, by implying that noone else in the world respects the animals they eat), but they don't put any money back into maintaining the ocean, which is a shared resource that they don't own. This means everyone else pays for their poaching. From a cultural standpoint, conventional meat produce have nutritional value and are used in cultural practices throughout the world. These farmers are selling a toxic product with to an extremely niche market as a fake cultural practice in order to cover up international wildlife trafficking. They're killing dolphins to profit off people who think dolphins are cute. All of this together is definitely a greater crime against greater society than meat eating in itself.

They have never closed any dolphin business in Japan. Instead, we found the government lies about food safety and we confront the government about their lies. this was very well made. It shows that not everyone has the same opinion on the practice, but that there is change happening. In my opinion, I think the killing needs to end. I do think that the aquariums have brought education about dolphins to people who would never get to see them in the wild. But wild dolphins should not be taken. Also, I know that dolphins live a very complex social life. Tanking babies from their mothers is very taxing on their lives. I am not a fan of it, even before the cove. Growing up in south Florida, I always preferred to see them in the wild, but I also know that the towns that depend on dolphins can find a way to slowly change from capturing dolphins and begin sanctuaries where they can be seen in their natural habitat. Like Orcas in western North America, dolphins, and whales could be a large tourism trade that more than 24 people can do and thus the wealth could be shared in the town. I hope that there is a change that can help both the town and the dolphins.

I just found out about this.. Now I'm not one to go and be all "ur a monster for doing this" or "ur a monster for eating meat" or anything. I eat meat, other animals eat meat, hell the dolphins eat fish and such. We need to eat meat as a way to get proteins and nutrients that plants don't have (I mean, we ARE omnivores). But do we REALLY need to eat dolphins? Like, for real? They are one the most intelligent creatures on this planet, able to even kill themselves when they are too depressed. Why do we have to push them in a corner and brutality slaughter them? They were not bread to eat like cows and chickens and other meats, Since I see that argument Alot in the comments, certain cows and chickens are breaded for consumption, while animals like horses, dogs and cats are breaded for companionship. Dolphins? Whales? Sea life in general? They were made to live, along side us. If that is the case, why not we just eat each other? We are meat, we have intelligence and we can suffer excruciating pain- I want to visit Japan one day, it's my dream too, and I will not fault them on their traditions and ways of life, as we Americans have ways of life that the Japanese don't agree with either. But like I said, I will never eat a horse, dog or Dolphin. I don't agree with this, and believe it should be shut down, because even Hitler thought he was the hero in the end. But I won't fault them either, because it's their "tradition" and their way of life (Maybe, I'm not sure, I'd like to ask any Japanese person their thoughts on it? I've seen that some don't agree with it and some that do, I dunno-)

However, they are so proud of it that you can find " Whale Town " at the entrance of their town. But it's only a matter of time until it becomes bankrupt. As much as I love Japan , their cultures and traditions, this town's so called traditions have to be abolished completely. They actually don't need to hunt dolphins because Kumano Sea is abundant with marine life as it is located in the north of the pacific ocean.
