Artistically and historically speaking, Rome is of the highest point of the humanity. Far higher than "cities brand" like Paris o New York. Unfortunately it has been administrating very bad in the last decades but it is still an unmissable spot for everyone wants to say: "I've seen the world".

They built a scaffold system he was laying down while he painted it and did not do it out of the kindest of his own heart either his dad was a criminal and owed a lot of money and so michael as well owed a lot of money and he made a deal with the pope at that time to paint the churches roof as payment and took him over 20 years to do it and pay off his debt owed by his dad, that's the truth of how he got to paint it, but he really was not good at painting compared to being a sculptor which he really loved to do, just look at all the work he did from one peace of large marble? ?

I visited Rome for the very first time when I was 11. The trip was kind of rushed so we failed to visit the Vatican Museum. 15 years later I revisited the city as a part of my graduation trip of my MD program and finally made it to Sistine Chapel. I was shivering and in tears when I sat down below the ceiling with my folks. Prayers do come true when u really believe.

Just came back from seeing this for the 1st time, pretty sweet. I didn't realize that the last judgement was done originally with all nudes, but upon Michelangelo's death they had clothing painted on it as to make it less "obscene." (otherwise, it is said, the church would have destroyed the entire painting.)

Very much respect the culture and heritage of Italy and the artistic masterpieces. Michelangelo's unfinished statues are really the most amazing of his work. His unfinished statues resemble life coming out of rock! Also, love the Sistine Chapel; but, please know there were several workers with Michelangelo painting the original ceiling fresco. There is quite a bit of professional debate and disagreement regarding the recent Sistine Chapel renovations (in the past 30 - 40 years) in that very poor judgment was used and negligently removed intended parts of the original fresco that were layered varnish with ash which historically Michelangelo and his workers intended to use to create depth of color as characteristic of the Italian Renaissance. Did not like the fact, the recent restoration included repainting sections of this original masterpiece.

@MandyJMaddison
@MandyJMaddison 3 роки тому
Which panels do you mean? If you are talking about the pictures around the side walls, then NO. Back in the 1470s, in Michelangelo's childhood, there had been some very bad feelings between Rome and Florence, that resulted in an assassination, and reprisals. Florence was already very famous as the home of many great artists. To heal the division between Rome and Florence, a Bishop came up with the idea, and organised for a team of painters from Florence, or associated with the artists of florence, to paint the panels around the walls. It all happened. It was very well organised, and beautifully achieved. Even though there were four different teams of artits, they worked together harmoniously, because it was decided, for every picture that the main figures should be the same size, and the horizon at the same level. So they look like a set. The Life of Mosesis painted on one wall, and he Life of Christ is painted on the other. Two paintings were demolished to make way for the Last Judgement. Two at the other end were damaged and repainted later. they are not as good.

Don't make idols not Don't make statues. You are plain lying. Go read again . And right after giving this commandment God commands Moses to make the Bronze serpent . By your logic god would be contradicting himself . The bronze serpent was a statue not idol but it became an idol later when people started worshipping it so Hezakia destroyed it . So instead of putting scummy Protestant heresy in comments why don't you go and learn some theology and church history
@datmeme8967
@datmeme8967 Рік тому
@@johnfrancis6413 Nice try. No, God would not and never has contradicted himself. At the point the people began to worship the serpent, it was an abomination. People in the Catholic church ARE worshipping these icons and statues. They are an abomination. You actually proved my point. Thanks.
@johnfrancis6413
@johnfrancis6413 Рік тому
@@datmeme8967 Hahaha . For 10000th time the ignorant Protestant accuses Catholics of worshipping statues . I don't know which Catholic claims that but some how all Protestants claim that . So here is the official teaching CCC 2112: The first commandment condemns polytheism. It requires man neither to believe in, nor to venerate, other divinities than the one true God. Scripture constantly recalls this rejection of "idols, [of] silver and gold, the work of men's hands. They have mouths, but do not speak; eyes, but do not see." These empty idols make their worshippers empty: "Those who make them are like them; so are all who trust in them." God, however, is the "living God" who gives life and intervenes in history. 2113: Idolatry not only refers to false pagan worship. It remains a constant temptation to faith. Idolatry consists in divinizing what is not God. Man commits idolatry whenever he honors and reveres a creature in place of God, whether this be gods or demons (for example, satanism), power, pleasure, race, ancestors, the state, money, etc. Jesus says, "You cannot serve God and mammon." Many martyrs died for not adoring "the Beast" refusing even to simulate such worship. Idolatry rejects the unique Lordship of God; it is therefore incompatible with communion with God.
@johnfrancis6413
@johnfrancis6413 Рік тому
@@datmeme8967 Also read my first comment again slowly . I have said that statues are allowed but not idols . And you assume all status are idols because of ignorance .So when God asked Moses to create a serpent it was a statue but somehow you people accept it is statue and then turn 180 degrees back and call Catholic statues as idols .

It amazes me that people do not contemplate what the Sistine Chapel symbolism is conveying. I believe that I am the foremost expert in the world on the Sistine Chapel symbolism and I know hundreds of mystical secrets that have not been written about in five hundred years. Didn't you know that the Sistine Chapel was completely design architecturally and symbolically before the corner stone of the building was put in place? Didn't you know that the Zodiac/Calendar Year is on the ceiling of the Sistine Chapel? Didn't you know that the Star of the Magi dominate the mystical nature of the ceiling's fresco? Didn't you know that the overall symbolism of the Sistine Chapel is a commentary on the first chapter of Genesis? Didn't you know that the Kabbalistic Tree of Life is a main part of the symbolism dominating the Sistine Chapel? Didn't you know that a major part of the mystical symbolism of the Sistine Chapel has to do with Ezekiel's Merkabah? Didn't you know that symbolically the pope is beheaded is beheaded when he is elected to the office? Has the Roman Catholic Church kept you, the laity, completely out of the loop? Hmmm How can I know all these thing; yet, no body in five hundred years has written about them? I have never been to the Sistine Chapel; yet, I know all of these things. I am probably the last member of the Roman Catholic Church's laity alive. Can you imagine that?

William John Meegan, I am something of an expert on the Sistine Chapel myself. Did you know that Michelangelo was on of those heretic Protestants? It's all there, on the ceiling of the Sistine Chapel.

@@asdf1991asdf "Heretic Protestant"? In the early 1500s, when Michelangelo was called to Rome by the Pope to paint the Sistine Chapel ceiling, there were already priests and other religious thinkers who were moving in the direction of "Protestantism". This eventually resulted in huge rifts in the Catholic Church, with the Lutheran Church, the Church of England and others denying the authority of the Pope and the Pre-eminence of the Roman Catholic Church. All these people were considered "heretics". To deny the authority of the Pope was a heresy. To say that a person could have a direct relationship with God that was not dependent on the Church of Rome was a heresy. A person could be executed for these heresies. > When I look at the ceiling that Michelangelo painted, I am led to believe that he supported Protestant, rather than Catholic theology, and that IF THIS HAD BEEN RECOGNISED, he would have been regarded as a heretic. (by the Church of Rome).

@@asdf1991asdf, If we ignore the Last Judgement, which was painted later, after a time of great turbulence in Rome, and in the Catholic Church. The scheme devised for the decoration of the Chapel was extremely hierarchical. The paintings around the wals do not simply show Old Testament stories- they show a Hierarchy in which Moses is supreme. The opposite wall shows Jesus, but with great emphasis on the establishment, and power of The Church. (i.e. the Roman Catholic Church. The Ceiling has twelve "pendentives" which are the big triangular structural support of the ceiling. They are painted with Prophets and Sybils. The INTENTION was to have them painted with the Twelve Apostles.. Peter, First Bishop of Rome, fore-runner of the Pope, was tobe in the key position. So who is there? Jonah, who by his three days spent in the belly of the whale, is symbolically, the precursor of the Christ. Understand that Michelangelo informed Pope Julius that he would only agree to paint the ceiling, if he was given a completely FREE REiN over the subject matter. Catholic THeologians have looked for sources within the Catholic Theology of the day. They do not like to credit a mere PAINTER with the intellect to devise the scheme himself. (He was of a noble family, a brilliant architect, and one of Italy's greatest poets, not to mention his sculpture). But the Aim of the Catholic Church has, ever since they started critically analysing the work, has been to define it as the major work of ROMAN CATHOLIC art. The point that I am making is not that it is in any way SPECIFICALLY Protestant. If it contained any symbol that indicated this, then Michelangelo could have been burned at the stake for Heresy. What Michelangelo has done is make a passing honour to the FAMILY of the Pope who commissioned it..... in the oak garlands of the della Rovere. BUT there is nothing on the ceiling that makes a theological link with the central theology of the Church, that the CHURCH is an ESSENTIAL ELEMENT in the Salvation of Mankind. This is the VERY PLACE where Michelangelo SHOULD be making that statement. And yet, it is missing. Entirely missing. THe images of the twelve disciples would have made that point. The story of Genesis brings us right back to the Pre-Church days, when it was just us and GOD.

@@asdf1991asdf Yes, it had been going on for years. John Wycliffe 1322-1384, John Hus 1372-1415 (a century earlier than Michelangelo. The Hussite Church was well established by 1430. There was another Protestant Church called The Unity of the Brethren dating from about the 1450s.
