Why is there no mention that The Shining mini-series was shot at The Stanley? I was on the crew and we stayed and shot there for 7 weeks. Like Lillian said, the place is definately "active".

Because the miniseries always gets the short shrift in comparison with Kubrick's thing that's not even a real adaptation. Luckily for us the true King fans, there's the miniseries to go to whenever we feel like watching some REAL The Shining!

I live here in Estes, and have for about 30 years. The Stanley Hotel is just up the highway from me. My dad played the piano in the Stanley lounge for over 10 years. I worked as a waiter there in the mid-'90's, and I was just recently contracted to refurbish all the faux wood grain in the Macgregor dining room that Hollywood put in there when the mini series was filmed here. (It was used as the ballroom. Two friends of mine were hired to be zombies!). We were all in an tizzy when the miniseries was filmed here! They used so much of the hotel, and built a replica of the burned-out front entrance on the grounds directly in front of the hotel. Right next to it, they also built a replica of a section of the roof with a dormer window. We all giggle when we see the family driving to the Stanley in the beginning....they used about 3 different highways, going in all different directions. But the Stanley is gorgeous, beautifully maintained, and haunted. Ask anyone who's worked there! (including me).

I didn’t stay in room 217 but I stayed just down the hall and it was amazing and so spooky 0.0 DEFINITELY recommend a midnight ghost hunt! I only live an hour away from the hotel so I love visit g it as much as possible!

They remade this place to be all dark. It was originally pastel yellow and white. That’s when Stephen King stayed there. This new setup is just to make it look even spookier.

My sister ate at the restaurant there in 1990. She was wearing white pants and got up from eating lunch with her bum all green from a freshly painted chair !! However, the chair was dry and they swore had not painted them. The hotel staff, manager, and her inlaws were all speechless...they rubbed the paint on the chair and it wouldnt come off... but it was on her pants ?

I m from Boston and I stayed at the stanley hotel 3 times one time I stayed in room 215 cause 217 is very hard to book ! I was with my mom an my sister and it was in the middle of November so the place was empty . When we got there it it so beautiful but when we got into room 215 first off there was a strong smell tobacco but not like cigarettes like it was 1800s pipe smoking tobacco! So right away we were turned off and as my mother was looking around she happened to look under the bed where we found little girl Velcro shoes that looked like they were also left from the 1800s . At the time the maids that were working looked liked high school kids that needed work . We called a maid in and wen we showed her these shoes she quickly backed away and called her manager . The manager acted like it was nothing and sent us up to room 304 ! I never had more crazy dreams in my life !!

On July 4, 2021 (precisely 100 years after the date in the final shot of the movie), I was in Room 237 of the Old Faithful Inn in Yellowstone, built 1904, and definitely way remote and way creepy. I was pretty sure that was the room number from the movie, but I had no Wi-Fi, and everybody on the staff that I asked knew of the movie but had never seen it! They said that if you work in a creepy wilderness hotel, you don't really want to watch The Shining. Their loss!

Jim Carrey stayed in Room 217 while filming Dumb and Dumber and apparently had an experience so frightening, he ran out of the room screaming. He has yet to say what exactly happened in there. Someone should ask him.

He wrote the book based on his experience staying at the hotel, he said he would hear children in the hallway playing, even though Stephen and his wife were the only 2 guest, also children are allowed to go on the day tours with their parents, but children are not allowed to go in at night or stay overnight
