Sheffield Football Club are officially the oldest football team in the world! They have a FIFA order of merit to prove it and the only other team to have one of these? Real Madrid!
They are currently a non league club who play in the Northern Premier League. What they've given the world game is huge though!
I visited their stadium on the outskirts of Sheffield and even spoke to general manager Richard Sheldon to ask him about the club's lengthy past and exciting future.

It shouldn't be about the club Sheffield FC, that is only a very small part of football history, the whole city of Sheffield have an incredible football history with over 50 world firsts. Sheffield really is the birthplace of modern competitive football as we know it today.
@sheffsteel7

@@johnburns4017 Civil Service FC were officially formed 6 years after Sheffield FC. Also in these discussion is essential to define what a football club actually is and to also define was football is. There were version of football played regularly in the 1840's and 1850's where people used meet in the park and have a kick about. However Sheffield was the first place that had numerous organised football teams, it's the first place where competive cups knockout were played. The Youdan and Cromwell cup (1st and 2nd oldest cup competitions in the world) was the inspiration behind the FA starting the FA cup, Sheffield were heavily involved in discussions and provided London with the original FA cup, that was later stolen and never found. Rumours say it was melted down and forged into coins. Check out the UKposts side "Sheffield The Home of Football", a really interesting set of the origins of football documentaries.

To add a little bit more of the history of Sheffield football, as a few have correctly mentioned already Sandygate, the home Hallam FC, is the oldest ground still in use, and has been their home since they formed in 1860. Bramall Lane was originally the home of The Wednesday Football Club (formed 1867). The unusual name (it's actually not as unusual as you think) comes from the day off the workers had from the steel works. Like with Sheffield FC, Hallam FC and Sheffield Wednesday (The Wednesday Football Club), all these clubs formed from cricket teams looking to keep their players fit during the winter. Bramall Lane is, I believe, the oldest ground currently in use in the professional game and was vacated in or around 1888 by The Wednesday Football Club over a disagreement with the landlords, over rent. Football was much more popular than cricket at this point, and they simply tried - and yet failed - to capitalise on footballs popularity by increasing their rent. After The Wednesday Football Club vacated for Olive Grove (which is now the site of a Council depot), it left a hole to fill, and so Sheffield United were formed from the players who couldn't get a game for The Wednesday Football Club. Sheffield United have played there since. Sheffield United are now known as "The Blades", however this was the name originally used by The Wednesday Football Club until 1907. Until that point Sheffield United were known as "The Cutlers", with both names giving reference to the city's steel industry. In 1907 The Wednesday moved from Olive Grove to a new stadium in the Owlerton district of Sheffield, and from that point on became known as "The Owls", with United taking the nickname "The Blades".

I've been discovering lower-tier league and non-league football and it's fantastic. Same as with minor league and independent league baseball here in America which I've found more enjoyable and accessible than the Big League game, which has gotten over-hyped, too expensive, too money-soaked and now infested with analytics which is just sucking the human element out of baseball altogether.

Great to see the coach and horses! As a student in Sheffield from 2015-18 I regularly went to watch Club. Interesting, different vibe - with lots of football tourists and the occasional foreign tour (met some guys from Borussia Dortmund's fans team at a game!). Last game I saw there was a pre-season game against Hallam in July 2019 IIRC! Honestly not sure what to think about their proposed move north in to the city, with the new ground... The coach and horses is very much fit for purpose with the club where they are now...

Alan Shields Hamilton South Lanarkshire Scotland. Excellent vlog first of all Sam. Had just finished watching Arsenal Tula VS Spartak Moscow from The Russian Premier League just before your latest vlog came up. My understanding is that it is The Cambridge rules we play buy today. My Understanding of The Sheffield rules is that once you scored a goal in order for it to count you had to then pick the ball up & touch it against the crossbar this is what was sead in a B.T Sport documentary a few years ago. Football & many other team Sports around the world share the same roots you sead about The Sheffield rules they had scrums like both Rugby codes of today but Ice Hockey also at first used scrums aswell. I would love to go & watch Sheffield F.C but I would not know where to start because of there nomadic experience. I see clubs like Sheffield F.F , Hallam , Queens Park & Corinthian Casuals formally Corinthians Casuals before the merger as custodians of the game. Crossing my fingers I can get to a Pollok game A.S.A.P. Getting itchy feet in terms of wanting to travel & see games in different geographic locations it's so frustrating. I would say people should get out & watch none League or Junior clubs as we say in Scotland as much as possible aswell as lower league clubs. Keep Safe Sam.

The rules we play today are largely the old 'Glasgow Rules' from the early 1880's. You should check them out if you can find them online( i had a look at a hard copy around 5 or 6 years ago). Also, as i mentioned in another reply to you, Ice Hockey is based on the game of Shinty. Scots settling in Canada took Shinty over with them and adapted the game to play on ice during the winter months. Hockey/Ice Hockey is in no way inspired by Rugby.

Sheffield had competitive football, a league of 57 organised official clubs and 2 cup competitions before the football league was formed. The national Museum in Manchester only refers to football starting when the FA and FL were formed but there was a thriving culture in Sheffield before this caught on elsewhere. It's a bit like top flight football history only starting in 1992 when the Premier League started. It might be more sexy and convenient but surely the public should be shown the full picture. The Sheffield cup tournaments with paying customers were the inspiration behind the birth of the FA cup.

The rules the world uses today are the Association Football rules - *Soccer* for short. Before formalisation of the rules which eventually formed into two prime camps, Association rules and Rugby rules, there were many rules. Many clubs had their own rules with visiting teams having to play to their rules. Sheffield FC were one of these clubs. Rugby School another. These rules were formalised being adopted by other clubs being played in some towns or city regions. Some of the rules were quite strange to what we know today. Association Football rules were laid down in 1863. The rules of the other camp were Rugby Football rules laid down in 1871. The Sheffield rules, used from 1858 until 1877 allowed handling of the ball. Goals were scored by kicking the ball into the goal, and also scoring by a _rough,_ basically a touch down try similar to Rugby. Rugby retains this to this day. The Association rules forbid _roughs,_ with scoring only by kicking into the goal. Association rules allowed handling with only a _fair catch,_ which was catching the ball in mid flight but not running with it. After the catch the ball was placed on the ground for a free kick. The fair catch was abolished in *1866,* making the Association rules totally hands free apart from the goalkeeper. The Association rules from the change in 1866 resemble that of football today in broad outline. Many sports clubs are quite old, but when they started to play Association Football is the date of their founding as a *soccer club.* An example is Everton, who were founded in 1878 as soccer club, but older as a cricket club. _Liverpool Football Club,_ established 1857, not Liverpool Athletic Football Club in the Premier League, is a rugby club, never having played Association rules - but named a _football_ club. So the name of a club is meaningless. It is when a club started to play to the Association rules (soccer) is the key day for that club, not what sport they played previously. Liverpool Football Club could adopt the Association Football rules next season. They would be a soccer club from then onwards, however still a 165 year old sports club. There were originally 11 members of the Football Association playing to Association rules in 1863. Sheffield FC was *not* one of them, as they were playing to different rules, the Sheffield rules. Sheffield FC joined the Football Association shortly after its inception, not being a founding member. In 1866 The Sheffield Football Association was formed playing to Sheffield rules. Sheffield continued to play Sheffield Football Association rules until 1877, 14 years after the Association rules were formed, and 11 years after no holding of the ball was introduced, soccer. There is only one club still in existence of the original 11 Association football clubs, that is _Civil Service FC._ *_Civil Service FC_* *is the oldest existing Association Football club in the world.* Sheffield FC is the oldest *open* football club in the world still in existence playing to Association rules, although not 100% playing to the Association rules until 1877, as they played FA and Sheffield rules. Open, means open to anyone to play not having to be a member of an institution, like a university or the army. _Liverpool Football Club_ is the oldest *open* club playing to the 1871 Laws of the Rugby Football Union. Rugby Football Rules spurned a number of other rules such as American football. There are many clubs holding the honour of being the _oldest_ professional _Association_ club. The FA only allowed professionalism in 1885. So any club that went pro' when rules were changed is one of the joint oldest professional clubs, of which there are many. Notts County and Everton are amongst them. A club only became a _soccer club_ when adopting association rules from 1866 onwards, and that means joining the FA. There is also vagary in that some clubs played to association rules but were not official members of the FA. When a club enters an FA approved competition (challenge or league, amateur or professional) that club then becomes a soccer club playing to Association rules. Notts County claim a record. That they are the oldest _current professional club_ that has played association rules the longest whether as amateur or professional. So, we have these firsts relating to existing clubs: *1)* Civil Service FC - oldest Association football club in the world. *2)* *** Sheffield FC - oldest _open_ Association football club in the world. *3)* Notts County - a _current_ professional football club in the world to have played to Association rules the longest. Many disregard numbers *2)* and *3)* as being pedantic second tier records. *** Number *2)* Sheffield FC may be regarded as being a 100% Association football club from 1877, as they also played to the Sheffield rules, which had the _rough_ which is the equivalent to a try in Rugby rules, and occasionally the Association rules until then. If that is accepted then many other clubs hold the distinction of being the oldest _open_ Association football club in the world.

John.....thanks for that...interesting stuff....it really shows how semantics become so important when discussing these things. It's the same with oldest ground. Preston fans say they've played at their ground longer than any other club, Sheffield Utd say their ground hosted organised football in 1862 however Sheff Utd weren't formed until 1889. Then you have Mansfield saying their ground is older because there is evidence that their ground Field Mill is on a site that used to be a field that had regular football played in it from 1860 ish. However Mansfield weren't formed until after 1900, that site had football matches played in it but it was just kick abouts and not organanised football. I've even heard Wolves fans claim Molineux is really the oldest ground in the world because that area was originally a large park and there are records that various sports including the odd football kick about were played at that site in the 1840's. Also as you say what is football? In the early days it was part rugby part football. Agree the Sheffield rules have something called rouges, a bit like a touch down. However many of the Sheffield rules which were almost identical to the Cambridge rules (corners, free kicks etc) were eventually amalgamated into the FA rules. The site "Sheffield The Home of Football" theorises that graduates from the Cambridge University may have returned to Sheffield with rules/ ideas to improve this new developing game which was starting to thrive in Sheffield during the 1860's. The 1st ever football tournament, the Youdan cup attracted a paying crowd of 3000, which was a world record attendance at the time.

@@sheffsteel7 Football, lets call it *soccer,* for clarity, as Football is an umbrella covering the rules of: Soccer, Rugby Union, Rugby League, US rules, etc, who all say they play a type of _football._ Soccer, goes back to the starting of when players never held or ran with the ball, as not holding the ball is what makes *soccer* stand out from all the other _football rules._ That was 1866 when the Football Association adopted the rule of _no holding._ There were 11 club's in the FA at the time of which all 11 were the first *soccer* clubs. Only one remains, Civil Service FC. The oldest extant soccer club in the world. The oldest professional club? When the FA adopted professionalism in 1885, of which Notts County, Everton, Wolves, etc are amongst them. Many FA members remained amateur. BTW, *soccer* is a nickname for Association Football rules. Sometimes called _togger,_ as we called it as kids. Rugby was called _rugger._

@@sheffsteel7 Many of the Sheffield rules were incorporated into the FA rules (also known as the London rules despite being founded by Yorkshireman), as were some Cambridge rules. But Sheffield FC still played to their own rules which allowed handling of the ball until 1877.

@@sheffsteel7 The Youdan cup was not *soccer,* as handling of the ball was allowed - the Sheffield rules. As I emphasize it is when _football,_ (soccer) as we know it emerged, which has a specific date, *1866,* which is when no handling of the ball was formalized. Everything after that is as we know it - soccer. Everything before is not.

Yeah most of the early games were between members of Sheffield FC. Without any other clubs to play, all the Sheffield FC lads would meet up and play each other. Usually the teams were decided on surname (A-M v N-Z) or it was married men v unmarried. Strange times back then!

@moff1874 2 роки тому
@@johnburns4017 Said who?
@johnburns4017
@johnburns4017 2 роки тому
@@moff1874 There are two versions of the field game _football._ *i)* One in which there is no holding and running with the ball; *ii)* One in which there is holding and running with the ball. *i)* is generally called *Football,* *ii)* is generally called *Rugby.* Before formalisation of the rules which formed into two camps, Association and Rugby, there were many rules. Many clubs had their own rules with visiting teams having to play to their rules. The game we know and play as football is *Association Football,* playing to Association rules laid down in 1863. A prime rule is no holding and running with the ball. The rules of the Rugby Football Union, which allows holding and running of the ball, were laid down in 1871. Many sports clubs are quite old, but when they started to play Association Football is the date of their founding as a *football club,* which is no holding and running with the ball. An example is Everton, who were founded in 1878 as an Association football club, but older as a cricket club. Manningham FC were founded in 1880 playing to the Rugby Union rules, then paying to the Rugby League rules, then in 1903 changed its name to Bradford City Association Football Club, keeping the same company registration, playing to Association rules. Bradford City dates its foundation as 1903 not 1880. _Liverpool Football Club,_ from 1857, not Liverpool Athletic Football Club in the Premier League, is a Rugby rules club, never having played Association rules - but named a _football_ club. So a name is meaningless. It is when a club started to play Association rules is the key day for that club, not what they played previously. Liverpool Football Club could adopt the Association Football rules next season. They would be a football club from 2023, however a 165 year old sports club. There were originally 11 members of the Football Association playing to Association rules in 1863. Sheffield FC was *not* one of them, as they were playing to different rules, the Sheffield rules. Sheffield FC joined the Football Association soon after its foundation in 1863, not being a founding member, playing to Association rules and their own Sheffield rules until 1977, when they dropped the Sheffield rules. There is only one club still in existence of the original 11 Association football clubs, that is _Civil Service FC._ *_Civil Service FC_* *is the oldest Association Football club in the world.* Sheffield FC is the oldest *open* football club in the world still in existence playing to Association rules. Open, is open to anyone to play not having to be a member of an institution. _Liverpool Football Club_ is the oldest *open* club playing to the 1871 Laws of the Rugby Football Union. There are many _oldest_ professional _Association_ clubs. The FA only allowed professionalism in 1885. So any club that went pro' when rules were changed is one of the joint oldest professional clubs, of which there many. Notts County and Everton are amongst them. A club only became a _football club_ when adopting Association rules and that means joining the FA. There is also vagary in that some clubs played to Association rules but were not official members of the FA. When a club enters an FA approved competition (challenge or league, amateur or professional) that club then becomes a football club playing to Association rules. Notts County claim a record. That they are the oldest _current professional club_ that has played Association rules the longest whether as amateur or professional. So, we have these firsts: *1)* Civil Service FC - oldest Association football club in the world. *2)* Sheffield FC - oldest _open_ Association football club in the world. *3)* Notts County - a _current_ professional football club in the world to have played to Association rules the longest, either being amateur of professional. Many disregard numbers *2)* and *3)* as being pedantic second tier records. Sheffield FC, is an odd one as the club only adopted 100% the Association rules in 1877, playing to the Sheffield Football Association rules until then - the Sheffield rules permitted holding and running with the ball. So Sheffield did not become a full Association club until 1877, which does not make them the oldest Association Football club in existence.

Are you trying to say football didn't begin until association rules were applied?😃
@johnburns4017
@johnburns4017 2 роки тому
@@moff1874 Yes. I am not trying I am saying. All others picked up the ball and ran with it to some degree. The first rules of Association you could _handle_ the ball but not run with it. You can still handle the ball in Association rules, by using the throw in, but only in a dedicated part of the playing area, which is outside of the side _touch_ line. Outside of the touch line you cannot kick the ball. *Football* rules falls into two distinct camps: *1)* Association (no holding and running with the ball). *2)* Rugby (holding and running with the ball permitted). Rugby football rules are sub divided into further rules: Rugby Union, Rugby League, American, Australian.
