It is Japan, so none? Japanese memories: Standing at a urinal in an industrial facility doing my thing and the cleaning lady walks up beside me to start cleaning. NBD, because Japan. At a tebasaki restaurant - there is a single toilet for the whole restaurant. Hallway for the toilet (toilet is blocked in a separate room with a door), has both a urinal and a sink. Outer door to the hallway has no lock. Taking a leak in the urinal and another customer walks in... Japan is great for sketchy weirdness.

Yeah, that'd be a no for me. It's just not usable space. As you say you could fit a futon on the floor on the side with access but where would you store it when it wasn't out ... or anything else ... you haven't even got a fridge, or space to put one. Using the bath or toilet would be a constant fear of someone seeing and, despite the aircon unit, trying to keep it's greenhouse like structure at a comfortable temperature would be a constant fight. Not sure having plugs in the floor next to bath is particularly safe either

@mfraye12 2 місяці тому
Same, I feel like calling that area the "guest room" (7:41) was a bit of a cop-out to make it seem like the front room was the only option for the main sleeping area lol. There's no other real use for that space with the small sink than as a bed, so put the bed/futon there and use the larger width area for a living room. Honestly my main gripe with this place is the lack of a fridge and general storage. I'm unfortunately not minimalist enough for places like this lol but conceptually I wouldn't mind this place.
@Wolfsschamane
@Wolfsschamane 2 місяці тому
Seriously? Why? It's conceptionally extremely weak. Build the staircase in a corner instead of the middle and you get a much better to use room. Furthermore those windows will kill you in summer and are unlikely to be very good for isolation for winter, so better do not use a futon. The only thing to do with the space behind the bathroom is as storage room and just forget about the random sink that absolutely nobody needs there. Use a combination out of couch and bed for the main room and end of story, having a seperated sleeping area when it's already so tiny is just plain stupidity. Some people just enjoy to torture themselves apparently.

I've recently fallen down the rabbit hole of watching your video, and as a 6'4 aussie dude that is NOT a small person, it is fascinating to see just how compactly some people can live. In Essence, i can see myself living in some of the places you've shown before (The tall Archetects home was amazing, and the 5 floor place was too!) but I just cannot believe the size of some of the spaces they expect you to squeeze through! Alot of the stairwells and doorways are so low and narrow, which for their population makes sense, but I could barely get into some of these place. This apartment, The actual living space seems amazing to me, a little cramped but i could see plenty of ways to make excellent use of it, though I'd rather that weirdly placed extra sink just not be there, as I'd probably mainly enter the shower that side instead of climbing the toilet. The dealbreaker for this place would honestly be the stairwell though. and maybe the frist floor solves the issue but then you lose the cool view aspect of the place. Anyway, loving the videos, hope we see more soon, and im glad Okazaki-san is showing up again soon. The way she just see's a spaces potentiall, and when there is a tiny little hole goes 'if i fits, i sits' is fun to watch. it makes sense she loves cats so much.

Basically the walls surrounding the stairs act as a Core for the whole building (Imagine a potato chip skewer with the skewer being the core and the chips being the floors) that's basically how it is. Actually moving the core to a corner would be entirely possible structurally, though you would need another load bearing structure perpendicular to the stairs (maybe an elevator perhaps) to even out the center of mass.

Cross ventilation during the summer would be great. Just open two windows on either side and you wouldn't even have to touch the a/c. And I think you could get decent storage with some of those collapsible hanging closet organizers. Those outlets though, feel very unsafe in the event of spills, clogged toilet, or rain water getting in.

I've never said this about any apartment before (Japanese or otherwise), but it's definitely somewhere you would want to install electronic blinds, either manually controlled (singly or in groups) and/or preset for different times of day and night. And you would definitely want to install some kind of blind system around the shower that was properly waterproofed and drained downwards into the tub, because the amount of usable shower/tub space that shower curtain removed was just fricking ridiculous! 😲 Are we assuming Norm perhaps approached the bathtub from the wrong direction, and that coming from the hand basin side instead would be much easier than climbing over the toilet? And that way, the hinged glass partition behind the toilet is basically closed permanently rather than becoming a shower door? Personally I'd be tempted to use the emergency ladder as my regular entrance and exit method, and that way the topmost flight of the internal staircase would be made redundant and I could partition it off for myself and instantly double the total floorspace! 😂
@AndreaKeil

This is the most interesting tiny apartment you've given a tour of I think! I'd be curious to see one that is actually lived in to see how someone has set it up. It makes me wonder if an apartment like this is more for someone who commutes far for work? Do they just stay here during the week and travel to their home on the weekends? Or more of like a "vacation" apartment? Though it's definitely overpriced for what it is. I'm also amazed by those windows, damn what a hazard! And how do these full panel windows stand up to earthquakes? Being such a seismically active area, ceiling to floor windows seem like a REALLY bad idea. Great video, Norm! Thank you!

I'd have a custom loft bed with enough room on the edge so I could walk through the corridor without ducking down. You have to think vertically with this place and probably a lot of custom furniture. Thin but long wardrobes that could maybe double as a wall to block the windows. Maybe if the landlord allows it, a folding table connected to the side of the wall that can fold out when needed. Lots of hooks and depending on what the material of the window frames are, very strong magnets for above head storage. LED strip lighting around the top with diffusers would be a must.

I would hook up a sleeping hammock in the main room, that can be taken down when not in use. A roll up foam camping mattress for if I didn't feel like the hammock. One good, comfy chair and foot stool (eames style). Hooks on the walls for clothing storage in the section with the extra basin and a few foldable storage boxes. One narrow, drop leaf table on wheels, (the sort that is only 17cm wide when collapsed) and a folding chair that could be hung on the wall when not in use. I would love being able to open all the glass doors but hate the fact it only has a single railing, so would want to install at least one other bottom rail. Glass privacy stickers and narrow vertical plant wall for bathroom and toilet area.

I really want to see what an interior designer would come up with for this space! I think I would add a corner bar area in the main room to add more counter space, doubling it as an office space. A part of me would kind of want to design it like a balcony and embrace the balcony life. 😂 I’d put up a room divider to give more privacy from the toilet and the main room. I think I’d sleep in the corner on the side where the sink is. Maybe a roll out sleeping mat is all that could be functional. I would be up for the challenge. 🤣🤣
