Installing concrete storm pipe at work in Edmonton, Alberta. This pipe is where all the rain water drains from streets and from weeping tile around some houses. Catch basins on street curbs collect rain water and then the water runs into these concrete mainlines where it travels to lakes or ponds...

very very interesting !!!:) I've always been fascinated with sewers particularly sanitary., Why are the Manholes so (what appears to me) so scattered all over., again, to me, they don't appear to follow any pattern, ? why is that. ?? the same for storm ? some run along the 417 (Queensway), so I assume they run underneath the highway, why would they do that ? do they are link together some how etc. Thanks,Art

Art's Bobcat just droping a little info that I know (only year in) but I willing to bet that those pipes on the highway are not going with the highway they are crossing underneath and a manhole is not in a pattern cause it's a place where the pipes met to make one it should be called manifold lid

Am I the only one who thinks using excavators or backhoes to MOVE the pipes into position quite overkill? I am not talking about this video in particular, but this is standard in construction industry. But specially excavator HOURS are pretty expensive. They should be doing what they were MADE TO DO: excavate. Isn´t there some specialized, cheaper to buy and cheaper to operate machine for doing this job?
@wailnshred
@wailnshred 4 роки тому
If they have another machine, that's more fuel to buy, more maintenance and one more operator to run it.
@rogeriopenna9014
@rogeriopenna9014 4 роки тому
@@wailnshred Each machine has a cost/hour that already includes fuel, maintenance, operator, etc Excavators have pretty high $/h cost. A much smaller machine specialized for the job would be cheaper, simply because it would allow the expensive excavator to be used on what excavators are specialized at. Your argument makes no sense. Otherwise you would see an excavator carrying stuff (like cement sacks) from one side to the other of the construction site, and when someone points out that could be done MUCH MORE CHEAPLY in a small electric cart, or even in a wheelbarrow, you would use the same argument about extra operator, more maintenance, more fuel...
@wailnshred
@wailnshred 4 роки тому
@@rogeriopenna9014 You are not following me. More equipment, (even if one of the other operators runs it) means more cost. And another thing. Concrete pipe like in the video is heavy, what smaller machine is going to lift it at the radius they need to set it? It looks like 36 inch (approx. 1 meter) inside diameter pipe. If I remember correctly that would be approximately 525 pounds per foot, 8 foot lengths equals 4200 pounds each. What machine except for an excavator or crane can pick that weight and reach out far enough with it? And then home it up?
@rogeriopenna9014
@rogeriopenna9014 4 роки тому
@@wailnshred -more equipment, (even if one of the other operators runs it) means more cost. No. Your cost is higher WHEN you use a HEAVY equipment with a high cost per hour, that could be doing something else it was designed to do, to lift and place pipes. As I said, your argument that more equipment means more cost could be used for anything. "Hey, please, lets use that massive 500 tons crane we are renting for a fortune per day, that should be used to mount these giant steel structures, to actually move these 500kg piles of cement sacks around!!" Time is money. An excavator costs about $50/h. If you have a vehicle that costs $10 a hour to place pipes in place, you allocate the excavator to... EXCAVATE. Let's say the excavator takes 1 hour do dig a 10 meters trench. It takes 30 minutes to lay pipes in that 10 meters trench. For a 100 meters trench, with one excavator, you will spend 10 excavator hours (10 x $50 = $500) plus 5 excavator hours to lay the 100 meters of pipes. ($250). You had a cost of $750. Now let's say you have a much cheaper specialized equipement to lay the pipes. $10 per hour. You spend the same $500 for it to excavate the 100 meters trench. But you spend only $50 (5 hours x $10) to lay the pipes in the same 5 hours. You saved $200 out of $750. And after the excavator finished digging the trench, it could already be moved to another side to excavate something else. "What machine except for an excavator or crane can pick that weight and reach out far enough with it? And then home it up?" well, exactly. I am thinking there should be some sort of mobile grantry type crane, remote controlled, able to lift the pipes (at last pipes the size of the ones in this video), maybe weels on each sides of the trenches, with a side loading mechanism. ps: concrete pipe diameters vs weight (1 meter lenght) 400 mm = 150 kg 500 mm = 240 kg 600 mm = 300 kg 800 mm = 520 kg 1000 mm = 840 kg 1200 mm = 1100 kg So the pipe in this video, which imho looks 80cm (not 1meter) would be 520 kg.
@rogeriopenna9014
@rogeriopenna9014 4 роки тому
@@wailnshred Look, I word in a small civil infrastructure company, only 250 employees. We DO use excavators and backhoes for laying pipes.
