@@bobbyrayofthefamilysmith24 you are 100% correct. The prison system is one of the largest money cows in the US. Because of things like placing a $150,000 bond for stealing a single pair of jeans. I am a Belgian social worker and I can't believe that I'd have to assess someone's mental health in a short conversation with a checklist. That is insane in itself. That is not possible, unless you're only looking for obvious signs. Besides, people with no access to mental health care on the outside might not even realize that they're clinically depressed or that they have anxiety because no one ever told them. They self medicated and that's that. This is stunning to me. EDIT: Also, which social worker hears a man say 'I just need to die' and is just coldly like 'that's not going to happen'. Plus, when he talked about the fact that no one likes him, I don't think he was talking about his charges. It's an intrisic feeling and yes, you can say what she said and then you give some attention to his feelings. Who trained this woman?

How would you feel if you took on that job? I feel for this lady, she had to stand there day and day out listening to people saying they want to die. How would you deal with that if given that job? Thank you for this video. As a mental heath client myself I have seen the system being less effective throughout the years. I have been a client since the mid 80s and since around 2003 services have been cut to the point myself and others are falling through the cracks not getting the help we need. I am considering moving to Canada, my research indicates that their system is much better, but having no work history and nearly done with school but can't find work may make it impossible for me to convince the Canadian government to take me in.

My mother has schizophrenia and bipolar. Without healthcare, she could not get the right treatment and medication needed to function on a daily basis. She has been in JAIL for THREE MONTHS now because of stalking due to DELUSIONS she had that a certain person was out to get her. It wasn't her fault. She has a CHEMICAL IMBALANCE. This could have been PREVENTED. This would not have happened if she was on the right medication. She was supposed to get out soon after her court date last month, but the doctor did not submit the papers like he said he would, stating that she is better now because she is finally on medication in jail. So, here we are, a month later, her next court date is in a couple of days. I am hoping she will get a release date. I also found out that I have schizoaffective disorder and I couldn't be on the medication I needed because it cost $1,000 a month. I suffered for four months in a deep, depressive state and I wanted to end my life every single day. My mood swings were horrid and I felt like a monster because of the way I treated the ones I loved. The hallucinations that I had were very real and horrifying. Seeing, hearing, and feeling things that aren't there, that no one else can experience, is a complete nightmare. I finally was able to get on Medicaid after waiting for months and have been on medication for a month now. I have improved tenfold and am continuing to do so every day. To anyone who has a mental illness, props to you. I know not every day is a good day, but keep pushing through. Be thankful for the good days you have. Be prepared for the bad days. You're not the only one it affects. Your loved ones suffer with you. Although you may have it harder, do not forget about them. They're the ones who are there to hold your hand through it all. Your ups and downs. Your ins and outs. Be thankful for those who support you. They love you for who you are. Regardless of the obstacles you face. You are not defined by your illness. It's only a part of you, not all of you. Ps. I know what it's like. If you need someone to talk to, I'm here. ♡

+shamoosprite Thank you for sharing your story!! Mental health is completely overlooked... I was only diagnosed in 2014 with bipolar I disorder. Years before that, I was going through different types of therapy, seeing different social workers and doctors. Only to be diagnosed with depression. Just depression.. and depression did not explain my mood swings, delusions and all of the stuff that comes along with bipolar. After a hospitalization in the mental health centre due to two suicide attempts, I still wasn't diagnosed properly, nor was I properly medicated. I waited MONTHS for a psychiatrist. An actual psychiatrist. My first psychiatrist just labelled my symptoms as ADHD. I had to wait for another psychiatrist after that and she finally diagnosed me properly. We wait so long, and unfortunately, the medication can be extremely expensive. It's sad. I can relate to you. It's videos like this and it's the people who share their stories that get people like me to open up and then we can push for further awareness of mental health. I hope you and your mother do well!! Props to YOU.

If your best friend or the most trustworthy person you knew all of the sudden became a politician, either you or others around him would think the same of him as you do the current leadership. Not to mention the competition of any politicians in power want you to think they're complete scumbags just so they can take the seat next. Ask yourself, who's really being played? Do you hate someone because someone told you too, do you hate them because you think they think they're better than you, do you hate them just because they have more power than you, or do you hate them because you have personally met them and experienced what kind of person they really are? Likely not the last one. Most people hate the leadership because somebody tried to smear their names, because someone nit picked every little detail and exaggerated it, even telling lies. The fact is, you and I don't know shit. I'm not saying they're saints, in fact I'm far from saying that, but I will say that the person who thinks it's right to hate a man based on the hate campaign of others does not deserve to have a credible opinion. Seriously, wake up, you're all being played by many different influences. Nobody, not even me knows who's actually bad or whose actually good in office. There is always someone saying "THIS GUY SUCKS!" and there's always people who blindly believe it. Same goes the other way too. Plus! People who are anti-media only believe the media when it's convenient to them, so whenever there is negative press on any politician what do they do? They believe it, but god forbid there's any truth to the good thing the elected politician did, must be lies. Just at least think about it with an open mind. There is so much unnecessary hate, so much needless whining, so much action being taken for the wrong reasons. So shut up about your politicians, you don't even know those people. Same goes for the prisoners in this video, so much hate directed towards them and no one even knows who they are. Stop being so easily convinced and stop letting what's convenient to what you think ruin your life. The world is bigger than that. P.S. I know none of you douche bags will actually read this and think it through, but at least my idea exists somewhere. Maybe someone will take the good from it.

I felt so bad for those people. All they want is to have someone to love them and to feel loved. Just like that young man who said to the social worker he said 'everybody wants him to die' it made me feel so sad. 150.000$ bond set on that other young man for stealing jeans?! That is so ridiculous. There is a huge problem in the US. This is not human. People spend money to hear Beyoncé sing (for example) and she gets millions of dollars like other celebrities and celebrities spend thousands of dollars to purchase wedding rings instead of helping people and places such as these. My heart goes out for these people. Just makes me feel real sad.

"Nobody likes me." ♥ That hits me. I work in social services and before Covid, we operated a hospitality center. We basically just set up a place like a living room and for three days a week we opened up to the unhoused and underserved. This service proved to be really valuable to the public because we kept people off the streets during that time. We fed and clothes anyone who came through our doors. BUT most of all-we sat and talked and watched movies and created a community! SO many of our guests have a mental illness, no family, and can go for days without anyone talking to them. I will never forget one time I gave someone a hug and said I would see him next week. He told me - "Thank you. That's the last nice touch I will get until I see you again."

But, I found they treated the people with mental health far worse then general population. We went “outside” twice a week like we were in max. No TV, Library every two weeks. Living hell. One of the nurses refused to give me my sleep medication which made my sleep almost non existent some nights. Staff would threaten to throw you in the hole if you tried to ask for a counselor. I was found innocent too so don’t tell me I deserved that lol.

I once went to a mental hospital before because I had a mental breakdown over war footage in the Mideast between the US and Iran (via Iraq). I told the psychiatrist I was worried that WWIII would break out and poor Iran would get bombarded by the US airforce. She told me to not watch the news and just focus on positive news like curing cancer and housing the homeless. She said for every negative thing that happens in this world there are positive things that happen. The staff also gave me comfort items like a pink elephant plushie pillow to make me comfy and sooth my mental health. For alot of people who are homeless addicts, you guys know you're failing in life right now so the best thing to do is to help each other out and get off the drugs so you guys can have more sustainable more successful lives. As an incel who previously was tempted by alcohol abuse, I now help feed the homeless as inspiration to help those less fortunate then me.

+Mosca “JL” Sucio I think it doesn't help to generalize. Of course the prisons are full of people who will never change, psychopaths who know exactly what you want to hear and who are very good at manipulating people. Most psychopaths are incredibly charming when you first meet them, look at Ted Bundy. But there are also lots of people who are just lost and need help, mostly young people who can still change. If you want to improve society and do something about crime, you need to give some of these people a chance. Of course I'm not talking about serial killers and crazy psychopaths, but drug addicts and drug dealers, people who steal and rob because they feel hopeless and indifferent. If you just lock them up and say: they are all evil, you will never see any change.

@randy1098 років тому
Having worked in Law Enforcement since 1979 I know tons of "Law and Order Conservatives". Probably the biggest problem with Imprisoning a mentally ill defendant is that he or she has ALREADY COMMITTED the offense. Treating the Mentally ill may possibly (probably?) PREVENT the offense from even occurring. So, would you rather your daughters rapist/murder be given the Death Penalty, or would you rather she had not been Raped and Murdered? The question is as simple as that. It doesn't even rely on "compassion".
@wanettarenay13848 років тому

Unfortunately I've been to Cook County Jail and I've witnessed this first-hand. But let me say for the record Tom Dart really knows how to make himself look good on camera but it is a complete BS piece of lip service to make himself look good. He could really give a fuck less about anybody in that jail all you are is a number and a dollar sign. In fact the people that qualify for house arrest used to be able to leave in about 14 hours after the judge granted the house arrest. Now Tom Dart requires that you stay at least 36 hours so he can get his full 24 hour payday before you get released to house arrest that doesn't seem too caring to me. But I do agree with Vices piece, our jail system is now taking on the brunt of the mentally ill. And that's going to have a lot of negative ramifications on people's perceptions of the mentally ill. In fact statistically they are not Criminal whatsoever. In a first of its kind study conducted in Minneapolis of all the crimes committed only 7.5% we're committed by mentally ill people. I will provide a link below. We need to figure this out as quickly as possible otherwise there's going to be another mass incarceration of people that don't deserve to be in jail. You know, like they did in the eighties and the nineties with federal drug sentences and Federal mandatory minimums. This is a link to the article I read www.apa.org/news/press/releases/2014/04/mental-illness-crime.aspx This is the link to the study. www.apa.org/pubs/journals/lhb/index.aspx

I'm from Chicago and my dad was always in and out of jail for heroin. He did struggle with bi-polar disorder. Last time he got locked up he faked a suicide attempt so he could go to a mental hospital for a couple years instead of prison. I remember writing him letters and stuff. He ended up dyeing from an overdose when I was 13. We suspect he turned to drugs again after the loss of a close friend. I was too young for him to talk to me about his loss. I don't think he talked to anyone about it.
@randy1098 років тому
Thank you for sharing your personal story. I've been in Law Enforcement since 1979 and seen SO MANY men with mental "issues" that are just treated like common criminals. Being treated like cattle and imprisoned does not help the person with their Bipolar disorders or related addictions. It's quite possible that your dad simply started using Heroin to self-medicate against his mental disorders and of course, with addiction comes the related crimes to purchase the necessary drugs. May God bless you and your family and your dad's soul. He is finally at peace, but at what a price. Share your story with state legislators and others with similar problems. We must quit treating the afflicted as common criminals. When I worked with Juvenile Probation and Adult Parolees I saw the thread of Mental issues and felt helpless. Very Frustrating...

Thank you from the bottom of my heart for helping me and not punishing me when I was already down 🇨🇦❤️

Zach Shult the fact that he can get up there and talk to a whiteboard like it was his father and lay it all out there is truly courageous, i respect him and I hope he can heal from this situation

Warehousing mentally ill people in prisons is big business. Private prisons need to keep profits up so while crime has dropped, who is going to occupy those jail cells? If the war on drugs slows down than how are investors going to keep making money on private prisons? Simple, just exchange prisoners for mentally ill people. That way they will keep coming back and keep the private prison industry happy.

At this rate, just start making hospitals!

it looks pure evil. these people will have the right to wage war after being treated so badly.

I feel for the the dude put in single cell im the same luckily i know its just thoughts occurring from a sickness it just suck dealing with this sickness at all times then when i go for help im told some issues are just to serious and i need more professional help i.e. be committed. Its the voiceless opinion of mine and deaf ears of others that makes it easy to not care but always remember we got choices an life right left up down smile or frown we gone be straight 💯

Excellent documentary Vice News. The part where the inmate got up to talk to the board as his dad really hit home. Thanks Vice for everything you do.

As I watched this I said prayer of Thanksgiving that this is not me or my family. The poor gentleman that said "nobody likes me" broke my heart. Maybe with the rise in people talking about mental health the stigma attached to it will go away. I have had depression for over 20 years. There are ups and downs, you learn what triggers the downs. These poor people are in a viscous circle. God help them, they are your children.
