Pro tip, when you cut fuel in your engine, you’ll want to spin the compressor fan for a few moments after to run air through the engine. This helps it cool down and prolong the life span. Also if you want to film inside your engine and not burn the microphone, put a mirror in line with the exhaust port and angle it with a camera so you don’t burn the camera. The exhaust is pointed at a mirror
@DantevanGemert

Another thing to add about the heat: Jets and turbines are cooled by the air in the engine. Increasing fuel without increasing airflow causes an increase in combustion temps. So if it's running too hot, increase airflow.

It looks like the engine would benefit from some sort of restriction at the exhaust as to increase the escaping gas velocity, assuming you can keep compression high enough at the intake. Some sort of a CD Nozzle should be pretty simple if you made out of a can or something, especially with that spot welder.
@cailco100
@cailco100 2 роки тому
depends on how fast he exhaust gas are traveling sub-sonic and yes it can benefit from it. Supersonic and ya you'd decrease the gas velocity and lower efficiency.
@brennenbranger1897
@brennenbranger1897 2 роки тому
@Eric C the effective momentum of the gas is Mass * Velocity^2. While increasing both is beneficial, increasing the velocity of the exiting gasses is much more beneficial than increasing the mass.
@snortiblog
@snortiblog 2 роки тому
@Eric C I completely forgot about the mass flow rate of the system, but too be fair, if the exit speed of the exhaust for engines like this was inconsequential, then why do CD (or just converging) nozzles exist at all? As much as increasing the mass flow would also increase thrust, it would require a new compressor design, or stronger motors. Assuming that this isn’t cost effective for a moment, by optimising the velocity of the exhaust for the given mass flow rate, he would also in turn optimise the thrust output of the engine (as this increases the kinetic energy of the exhaust). As rocket engines are virtually the same as jet engines in this manner (they are both accelerating a gas to achieve a thrust), you can note that this isn’t just the effect of a turbine (as rocket engines do not have a turbine).
@jakegarrett8109
@jakegarrett8109 2 роки тому
@@cailco100 You still use a nozzle (expansion nozzle) if its supersonic though... You can also tell just by looking at it that its not supersonic, but obviously it is just due to the extremely poor amount of thrust as well. Either way, nozzle is good both supersonic and subsonic.

So…next you need to add a bypass to it to allow most of the air taken in to bypass the combustion and mix back in afterwards. This will increase the thrust produced and is why turbo jet engines are designed so. Also lowers the noise

@barongerhardt
@barongerhardt 2 роки тому
@@jeffstrongman7889 We typically only see afterburners on low bypass turbofans, turbojets and non-turbo types of jets. In most cases effectiveness will depend on how lean the main combustion is. In turbo type jets, lean mixes (like 4x more air as needed or even higher), to keep temps down, preventing damage to the in exhaust portions of the turbo mechanism. This leaves plenty of oxygen to add more fuel to and burn after those more fragile components. This inefficiently adds power. In a low bypass turbofan the bypass air can be mixed in with the hot flow, or not. There are real world examples of all three (hot only, cold only, the mix) being used for an afterburner. In this case, the simple jet doesn't have a turbo. It would likely be more power and fuel efficient to tune the main combustion closer to an ideal mix. I would also guess that the current build is running fuel rich. So there isn't any excess oxygen to use in a secondary burn, but that is just a guess.

@@ChucksSEADnDEAD That's fair. Your terse answer left some ambiguity in my mind, but I agree. What OP described was what most would classify as a turbo fan and they called it a turbo jet, but it would still be a sub class of turbo jet; if it had a turbo. I guess my problem, to me; for both, op and you; is that the video didn't have a turbo. So OP was wrong, but you didn't really correct it, but took it in another direction. Sorry for the rambling. My guess is that you know what you are writing about, but most, even most on a nerd channel like this, don't know that much about these terms.

You should try to make an underwater rocket engine. It would be a good next step to get to mars, considering there is no air in space. You could use electrolysis to get an oxygen and hydrogen mixture as fuel, or you could just buy an oxygen tank and continue to use butane.
@snortiblog
@snortiblog 2 роки тому
An underwater rocket engine is actually the opposite to what is needed in space, as space is a vacuum (very little to no pressure), and water is under a lot of pressure (at least in earths oceans it is), so the exhaust needs to be at vastly different pressures (otherwise the exhaust might be pushed back into the rocket). Sounds like a cool idea though, if he were to combine it with some sort of supercavitating submarine maybe he could make a supersonic sub.
@element9224

Love your channel, I am glade your safe... drilling, cutting/welding on a "empty" fuel tank has its dangers even when there small (don't want you to lose an eye... that would suck, but would land you a few more views the wrong way.) The tank may appear to be empty... but it may have fuel residue and air.. possible an explosive mix... If you can fill it with water or an inert gas after it is empty then do the Hot work its an easy step that in future may save you from injury.

I am genuinely impressed with your pliers spot welding setup. Also I was curious when I saw you joining the two canisters together with solder, when the solder joints would begin to fail. I saw them bubbling up quite a bit in the initial ignition testing. Perhaps you can figure out a way to make a little plier welder of some sort to get a better joint. All in all very cool project.

After having seen many of your engines in action, the next logical step would be controlling the burn better. Up until now your fuel and air mixture has always been controlled analogically. It is time to bring your combustion to the digital era! I am thinking about the rocket version of EFI ;-)

As someone who takes thermodynamics, I can say that you summed up the theory very well, would've appreciated to see an explanation of how expansion and compression is isentropic (meaning zero change in entropy, or just incredibly efficient), and heat addition and removal is constant pressure, and unfortunately it's hard to call this a jet engine, more or less a ducted fan with an overpowered afterburner. If you really want to make this a jet engine, you'll have to create the correct geometries so that the fuel and air can be ignited with a constant pressure, and the compressor, and more specifically your expansion process can follow a more isentropic curve. Also, your compressor isn't much of a compressor really, it just accelerates air and then heavily restricts flow, which just increases entropy really. If you want to make this more efficient, and potentially fly something, and believe me I've given this type of heat engine a lot of thought you need to do 4 things: - Compressor, make a 3d printed in your case, more preferably with titanium sls, or milled titanium, with multiple sets of blades (i'd recommend just copying blade geometry from existing turbojet designs) with an increasing inner diameters so that air is smoothly compressed which will greatly reduce your entropy generation, and achieve a much higher pressure. Also, make sure the tips of you blade do not exceed mach 0.9, I ran the calculations earlier and with a 10s 400kv motor, I think that made a blade diameter of like 150-200 mm, this of course would be the most efficient set up for isentropic expansion - heat addition, id recommend changing what type of fuel is injected and how it is, personally i'd recommend isopropyl,99.9 percent because it is cheap and easy to acquire but has a very large energy density, similar to kerosene, but burns at a lower temp. Youll need to create a way to push the isopropyl through small holes to atomize it, so it can combine perfectly with the air and allow for a constant pressure heat addition (which you'll also need to model geometry for), and increase efficiency - Expansion, this really is just all geometry based, and with your knowledge of rocket engines you should be able to figure out how to turn high pressure zero velocity air into low pressure high velocity air. Good luck I hope you revisit this, this is a very cool project and the engineering behind jet engines is very fascinating, also screw tomatoes also fun little bit of thermodynamics: Work (net) of a breyton cycle turbine is equal to Qout - work (compressor), what you're doing here is maximizing Qout by making all the compressor work be from the electric motor

Swap the electric motor for an impeller spun by the exhaust of secondary rocket engines to make the ultimate turbo-rocket engine! Maybe try running those CO2 canisters as the secondary rockets to prevent the turbine from instantly melting, while getting the main impeller to an insanely high speed.

Video idea: for a better way to power the jet. Add a nozzle to the end to control the jet blast better and make it more stream lined. Also you might want to make a bigger fuel cell and upgrade the intake jet so you have a better air flow. You are off to a great start and can achieve what ever you set your mind to. Congrats and have fun.
