It has been reported that Intel is looking to buy itself a slice of the RISC-V cake by making a $2 billion offer for SiFive. Even if the deal isn't made, it means that Intel is looking to turn to RISC-V and it has a large budget.

$2B is a small amount for what history may prove to be a big thing in the future. They learned their lesson with ARM. That they are willing to pay 4x for a budding company shows how serious they are not to miss the train this time.

I feel like Intel is going to use risc-v technology to make a cpu that can compete with Apple's M1 chip in the long run. They are also aware that Qualcomm is interested in making risc based windows cpu that can deliver M1 type performance. It would be a wise decision in my opinion for intel to invest heavily in risc-v cpu development to prevent Apple, Nvidia and Qualcomm from taking all risc CPU market share when x86 eventually becomes obsolete 🤷

The good thing about RISC-V is that even if Intel buy SiFive there is nothing stopping AMD or any other company getting into RISC-V and making there own designs too. Seems like there will be more competition to drive for RnD. Unlike Arm where there is just Arm selling their designs.

@Big K I wouldn't be so sure about that. There is a known strategy called EEE "embrace, extend and extinguish". This can not only be related to microsoft, but intel as well is known for violating laws and their lock-in policy against the competition. Because of such big and manipulative companies Innovation gets killed. There are many documented stories about intel. Do research about, how intel destroyed transmeta, because tm posed a threat to intel with a revolutionary chip, that was able to learn and to improve code execution. Our PCs would have been on a whole different level now, i guess. But after more than a decade only 4 cores are still the standard in desktop x86-64 computers.

I was just writing on a retro forum that x64 and CISC has had its longest day. There’s not much you can optimize anymore - Intel and amd did great. But their cisc arxhitecture with idiotically long and short instructions makes pipelining beyond 6 stages and predictions extremely difficult and requires far more transistors than on risc. And since we need to grow by putting more CPUs on a die and x64 because it’s complex instructions set and because of it pipelines, there’s not a lot of space. And connecting CPUs on an externs bus again would not give the same performance than on the same internal bus.

If you want to make a chip then you need to pay a company such as TSMC or Intel or Samsung to make the photolitho masks from your design and to produce silicon wafers from the masks and cut them up and test them and put them in packages. You also need to design the CPU core and the rest of the SoC and for that you need a team of engineers who will want salaries, or else contract that out to a company such as SiFive. @BruceHoult
@BruceHoult 2 роки тому
@@kensmith5694 if the calculation is unsigned (as it is for multiple-precision) then the test and branch is a single instruction, the same as on ARM or x86. It's also a single instruction for signed overflow if B or C is a constant e.g. +1. If it's a signed add, B and C are unknown, and it's a 32 bit add on a 64 bit machine (which is a very common situation as most programs use 32 bit int even on 64 bit CPUs), then you need two instructions (do the add also as 64 bit, and check if the answer is the same). If none of those is true then a total of four instructions are needed. This a very rare situation, and is unlikely to be a performance problem for any real program -- and if it is a problem sometime in future then a "check for signed overflow" instruction can be added at any time, by anyone making a RISC-V CPU.

It forces companies into more expensive options which take time to develop and gives Nvidia several years lead while their competition has to build all their software and ecosystem from scratch. This is also why SIFive is worth so much more, because that is the ARM alternative for the entire mobile market and although they can openly use RISCV, SiFive offers plug and play configuration where you can design a chip in minutes and send it off to be manufactured, compared to having to spend months and thousands of hours developing and testing it first. The best they've announced, the "Xuantie" C910 is claimed to be around ARM A73 level, and I've heard they're using 16 core SoCs in their own data centre. The C906 is a single-issue in-order core. Allwinner is making the "D1" SoC with one C906 (including a vector processing unit similar to ARM SVE) running at 1 GHz. I have an Allwinner "Nezha" eval board currently on the way to me from China (in the hands of China South airline right now). This eval board sells for $99 but Sipeed and Pine64 have both promised boards using the same SoC later in the year for $10 to $15 at which it will be a viable Pi Zero competitor without the BS "you can only buy one" $5 price. I wouldn't say RISC-V is rivalling top ARM chip in performance just yet. Multiple companies including SiFive have RISC-V at about A72/A73 level which is five or six years behind ARM -- but RISC-V has only existed as a public thing for less than six years, and is catching up.

@El.Duder-ino
@El.Duder-ino 2 роки тому
@@GaryExplains agreed Gary, but the level of performance per watt is still incomparable for example to CISC especially when your code is perfectly optimized to your silicon. For example with consoles I wonder how long Sony and MS will be able to stay and keep up with the x86 design and move to RISC especially due to thermal limitations, which are becoming really an issue as processors manufacturing processes are improving only with few nanometers per year. Nintendo for example realized that and they are expected to release new quite powerful machine as an handheld, while PS and Xboxes are getting bulkier and larger. They have vapor chambers and liquid metal cooling and I think in one point this wont be enough. Or take a look at the Apple's M1 optimized for their OS and SW, this is really where ARM and RISC shines, not talking about custom HPCs and their success there. You know what you should make video about Gary? Memory. Especially about how we can get the fastest memory on chp memory in the future, which is the key for performance gain as manufacturing processes and core numbers are either moving slowly forward or like in number of cores they don't always matter that much. It would be good to explain in that video how the world can achieve ideally on chip memory performance (cache) without making ultra large chip dies. Especially with the recent improvement with 3D stacking V cache from AMD and for example special chips which have large caches like the Graphcore's AI chips. I really believe that significant chip performance will be gained also with the memory development and breakthroughs by achieving one day speed of the cache and having large capacity of it.

How can any implementation of any architecture from any company be free of cost? Obviously there should be some incentive for implementing the architecture. The best thing about RISC-V is that any one who implements the RISC-V architecture doesnt have to pay a hefty architectural license fee and/or royalty fee. ARM has enjoyed too much of this architectural license fee and royalties. Its time that everyone should be able to start implementing the RISC V architecture, not worrying about someone coming behind them with lawsuits. If Intel can manufacture processors for IOT devices now, why can't they design and manufacture a CPU for mobile or Notebook in a few years?

@GaryExplains 2 роки тому
For two reasons: 1) Intel won't want to touch its x86 business in any way whatsoever, so it won't invest in high performance CPUs for desktops/laptops in the short term. 2) Designing a microcontroller is very different to designing a high perf low energy processor to rival the M1. Since RISC-V is an open architecture, one obvious question is what Intel proposes to buy? Certainly, they cannot purchase the rights to the architecture because SiFive does not own those rights. There is some IP in SiFive's adaptation of the architecture to a silicon implementation, but this hardly seems worth $2B. The open architecture is available for anyone to implement for free -- including Intel -- and a shorter development cycle seems to be Intel's only benefit. I am concerned that Intel simply intends to quash the only successful implementation of RISC-V thus avoiding possible future competition. SiFive should be very wary of non-compete clauses and other limitations to their freedom to utilize RISC-V for their own future plans. Once good corporate lawyers have verified this to be the case, I say sell and invest the money in a new, better RISC-V foundry of their own.
