Hey - just like to drop a line on this. Not every three way switch is created equal !!! In wiring a three way, look at the screws on your switch. Two of the screws are the same color and these screws are the " travelers " - wires on these two screws do absolutely nothing else but go to the two same two color screws of the next switch and this is the key / secret to wiring these switches ! Now the fun part ! So a friend of mine purchased a three way switch to replace one that went bad. He had me look at it because despite " he put it in the same way the other one was " it didn't work ! While one manufacturer may have the two screws of the same color on the long side of their switch, a different manufacturer may have one screw on the left side of the switch and the other same color screw on the right side of the switch - so you need to watch that. Also, when we moved in our house (second owner) we have a 4 way switch system that didn't work - they had me scratching my head for awhile - on the back side of the switch was labeled on /off - here they were attempting to use a double pole switch as a 4 way ....🤔🤪 These kind of mistakes can make you go crazy !!!

Its amazing how many people struggle with a 3way, and a 4way is just a break in between the travelers of a 3way. I know the word common throws people off, the best way to think about it is the that commons are what makes up a common single pole switch, a hot and a leg and the only difference when you make it a 3 or 4way is that there are two travelers in between the common switch setup.

You can add more crossovers in the middle. You can even use crossovers for the end switches, just leave one of the outer pins disconnected. That makes ordering simple, just order crossovers. And if you really wanted you could use a crossover as a single switch and make ordering super simple.

The switch in the middle is called an "intermediate switch" (United Kingdom) and you can fit any number of them in the circuit should you need to have 4,5 etc. in a long corridor or several different levels. For a large number of lights this circuit can be used to pull in a relay.

you can also scale it by adding more DPDT switches in the middle also if you want two way switch you only need 2 SPDT switches removing DPDT in the middle
