Internal Cable Routing: Tools, Techniques, and Troubleshooting for a Flawless Finish: • 🛠️ Internal Cable Rout...
Installing internal bicycle brake housing can seem daunting, but with the right instructions and tools, it's a manageable task, even for beginner bike mechanics. Here's a breakdown of the process:
Preparation:
✅ Gather your tools: You'll need housing cutters, cable cutters, ferrules, a housing routing tool (optional but highly recommended), gloves, lube, and rags.
✅ Choose the proper housing: Ensure the housing diameter matches your brakes and is compatible with internal routing.
✅ Prepare the frame: Identify the cable entry and exit points and remove any obstructions like frame plugs.
✅ Cut the housing: Measure the length of housing from entry to exit, adding some slack for maneuvering. Use housing cutters to make clean cuts.
✅ Install ferrules: Crimp ferrules onto the housing ends to prevent fraying and ensure smooth insertion into ports. Apply lube inside the ferrules.
Routing the Housing:
✅ Use a housing routing tool (optional): This flexible tool with a magnet or hook simplifies navigating the internal channels. Feed the tool with the housing attached to the entry point and guide it toward the exit.
✅ Manual routing: If you don't have a tool, thread the housing with a loop at the end through the entry point. Use a long, thin tool like a straightened coat hanger to reach and grab the loop from the exit point. Pull the housing through carefully.
✅ Secure the housing: Once it is through, use zip ties or specific housing clamps to secure it to frame mounts or designated attachment points.
Installing the Cable:
✅ Thread the cable: Feed the brake cable through the housing, starting from the brake lever end. You can use a cable luber tool to apply lube for smoother movement.
✅ Cut the cable: Leave enough cable at the caliper end to connect to the brake pad and adjust tension. Use cable cutters to make a clean cut.
✅ Connect the cable: Insert it into the brake caliper and secure it with the cable bolt. Adjust the tension and bleed the brakes if necessary.
Additional Tips:
Take your time and be patient, especially during the routing step.
✅ Don't force the housing or cable, as this can damage the frame or components.
✅ Use plenty of lube to prevent friction and ensure smooth operation.
✅ Watch online tutorials for visual guidance specific to your bike model.
✅ If you're unsure about any steps, consult a bike mechanic for assistance.
Remember, practice makes perfect. With some patience and these guidelines, you can successfully install internal brake housing on your own and enjoy its sleek look and smoother operation!

My passion for bikes started when my parents opened a shop in the 1980s called Parker Bikes (we were located in Parker, Colorado). My love for cycling has continued since then, in my work and with my hobbies of road cycling and mountain biking. After my parents’ shop closed, I worked for other bike shops (including Lee’s Cyclery in Fort Collins), where I built and sold bikes, fixed and tuned up bikes, and managed inventory.
I love working on bikes and want to share my passion for cycling with others. So, next time you’re talking cycling with someone and wondering how to get started or where to go from here, you can think, “I know a guy!”

Thanks Justin for the video. A shortcut would be to install the brake cable through the sti lever before threading it through the bar to act as a guide. Also when filing the housing, it's a better practice to hold it horizontal or upside down to avoid the filings to fall into it.

Good point, but sometimes you must work that housing in other directions to make those tight turns. In that case, you have to look at each internal routing as its own monster. lol Like "Klein" frames.

Thanks for posting this instructional video! I have had mix results with Teflon-coated, "low friction" cables. When I use these on my SRAM Double-Tap shifters, the internal ratcheting mechanism will start wearing on the Teflon outer coating, which will cause the material to peel and fray off the cable itself. In turn, pieces of Teflon will get caught in the shifting mechanism impacting performance. This has made me switch back to non-coated cables.

I use just a suitable stainless steel cable myself. You can get debris fuzz that will affect the performance on coated cables over time.
