Thanks to Keysight, I'll be doing an introduction to antenna design series with their FieldFox unit. I'll be covering a variety of different antennas and discussing the pro and cons of different designs. In this video, I misspoke and mixed up the halves of the smith chart. The top half is inductive reactance and the bottom half is capacitive reactance.
Here are some things that I like making small antennas with:
1. RG402 Semi-Rigid Coax Cable amzn.to/1VE1TR9
2. Solderable SMA connectors for RG402 amzn.to/22FrKJt
3. Ringer Cable Stripper amzn.to/1sWNfc1
4. SMA female to RP-SMA male amzn.to/1sWN7cE
5. Tinned Copper Wire amzn.to/1PuZdE4
6. Variable Capacitor amzn.to/22FsGNG
7. Magnet Wire for Loop Antennas amzn.to/1VE2MJt

Thanks for this video. It's perfect for me, as I'm studying EE but not specializing in RF. Very much looking forward to the series!

Ive had my ham general for years ( wanted to play with aprs and habs ) and antenna design / theory always seemed like black magic. I am super looking forward to this series!

A great series which explains the topics well. Shame there weren't more episodes in this excellent collection.

I'd love if these Antenna Design videos were 1 hour long, or at least 20 minutes.

Lol, I caught that, and was about to open my math book! I had to make sure at least that much is right in my head! Subscribed!

I was wondering if you were talking about admittance for a second...

hi how did you read the frequency from this graph? For e.g if it crosses the X axis at , l;ets say , 30 ohms, how can we detemine the resonant frequency at that point?

Hey, I have a question re Balun: I have a Norcal doublet which is essentially a balanced line that is split at the end into two legs a la dipole. My KX3 works far better with this antenna when connected to a 4:1 balun. It sounds like you're saying that coax requires a balun and not balanced line? This is something I never understood about my radio & antenna setup and I was hoping you could clear up my confusion. Thank you.

No problem Taiden. What you're doing is fine and is really common. You're connecting the balanced line of your antenna to an unbalanced feed line as well as converting the mismatched impedances at a ratio of 4:1. When people need to get a much out of their systems as possible while requiring long lengths of cable may use a balanced transmission line like a ladder line. Many pre-made antennas already have small length of unbalances coax already attached. This is where you would use a balun to adapt the ladder line to the coax. The simplest form of a balun is just an adapter with a 1:1 transformer. If the antenna was already a good match at the end of the ladder line, then it would just be a 1:1 balun. As a result of being balanced, the ladder line will have much lower losses at long lengths compared to coax. For example, RG-58 coax loses 6.6 dB per 100 m at 1 GHz, while 300 ohm twin-lead loses only 0.55 dB. There are some disadvantages though. Ladder line is much more sensitive to the environment it is placed in and coax is still preferred unless you absolutely need maximum performance out of your system.

Can you use a VNA to measure the output impedance of a transmitter?

This thing is awesome and worth it if a company is designing antennas of any kind that may also need to be serviced in the field. It has a cable and antenna analyzer, a network analyzer, a spectrum analyzer, vector voltmeter and a ton of other modes. You might be able to convince them to just buy certain features a la carte and a smaller frequency span in order to get a much cheaper unit.

We compared four different manufacturer's cable and antenna analysers. The Agilent (now Keysight) FieldFox came out on top. Not at all cheap though. You're going to have to prove it will increase your productivity considerably!

@@GasparinPR Would it be bad for RF devices though? For optics or vacuum chamber equipment, sure, but I don't see the need for radio equipment.

Slow down. You are speaking so fast the audience is having a hard time listening, watching, and understanding what you are saying. I actually had to check that youtube had not set the playback speed to 2x because I was having a hard time capturing everything you were saying. Otherwise, good content.

Thanks, but I disagree. I like this style and a lot of my subscribers do as well. I have been told multiple times that my quick and to the point video are much preferred to the longer ones and my youtube statistics prove that.
