This is a real thing, BMW needs the headlights programmed to the car if you replace the modules, Toyotas need the radar programmed to the car if you unplug the front radar (even if you plug the same radar back in), VWs need the battery programmed to the car. This was a huge pain when I was working in collision repair.

@@Fhwgads11 Agreed, you need to code in some stuff, but you don't need to go to the manufacturer to do so (except keys and ignition, but imo there's a reasonable safety reason). Everything can be done by anyone with proper tools and knowledge. Apple requires you to contact them directly and only they can code it in, which I guess they won't do if you didn't buy the parts from them.

99% of repairs are back glass, screen, and battery. Aftermarket parts are plenty and work just fine. Camera repairs are rare- easier to refurbish the glass. Edit: unlike Hugh, I worked at an independent shop in a major city and performed thousands of Apple and android repairs. No doubt the Apple makes it harder but I’ve never had an issue with aftermarket parts for devices I fixed and most people didn’t care or know what True Tone was I told them they wouldn’t have it anymore. @electromega3077 --- Apple is the only major with a self-repair program. On iPhone14 and 15 they've totally redesigned the phone interiors to make them easier to repair. Also around the world there are many cities with no Apple Store. As a result, they work with a network of around 8,000 independent authorized shops. Their best scenario is to have customers who don't need repairs at all.

I love how they made the back glass removable but attached other components like the charging coil or the mic to it to make aftermarket parts more difficult to source and potentially remove some of the iPhone's functionality if you dare to use non original, aftermarket parts on your own phone. A flssh that is misbehaving or white noise from the mic could be some classy Apple shenanigans when it comes to changing the back glass. Except of course when you reuse the parts from the old back glass, which looks like a pain in the ass to do...

One thing worth pointing out is that even though they changed to USB C the data transfer speed of the base and Plus models aren't any faster than lightning was, it's still USB 2 speeds of 480mbps. Hardware still needs to be made a little more repairable, and the software locking needs to be loosened massively. Even if it was for security, heres a solution that would be JUST as "secure" and still give the user the ability to repair their phones. On the apple website if they would let you buy their "verified" parts yourself as if it were another product or accessory, when you recieve the part it is "unpaired", when you put the new part into the phone and log in, you then pair the part and it becomes a working part that cannot be used in another persons phone. This would satisfy the (shitty) argument that the parts pairing is done to prevent Iphone theft, while still allowing user servicing. However, we all know apples clear intentions about having to do all the repairs through them, and thats money and more money.

The circular MagSafe opening on the 15 pro max has a relatively wide surface area which, on a replaceable back glass, is 'too much surface area' for such an opening at the center, where pressure was applied. Given the development lifecycle of these things (Which is probably longer than the year we _conned-sumers_ see between iPhone releases) it'll be interesting to see how repairable the 15S (Or 16, or 15,2 or whatever they call it) will be to verify the quality of Apples greenwashing. Part of me wonders if the „Repairability“ aspect might take a while to filter down to design and production? 😇

What is your take on this more repairable back glass, but then breaking much easier than before as can be seen in some early drop test comparisons? I assume because of the way it’s no longer entirely glued giving it it’s integrity. Or due to the rounded edges exposing the glass more instead of protecting it by the lip of the bezel.

But it wasn't the problem with samsung or any android phone with back glass. Apple just messed up with glass
