A monitor's panel type dictates its characteristics, but which panel type should you choose?
There are IPS (In-Plane Switching), TN (Twisted Nematic), VA (Vertical Alignment) and even OLED, although that isn't viable yet.
We'll discuss the pros and cons of each of these panel types, and we'll help you decide which one you should pick for your use case.

I've used a lot of monitors, and based on my experience, I learned a few things: - The difference between 144Hz and 60Hz is noticeable, however it only benefits gamers. On the other hand, between 144Hz and 240Hz, not so much. - Contrast ratio matters, which is why IPS panel might not be the best option for movies because it can never really show that "true black" which is achievable with VA and TN panels. - Viewing angle might not be as important as you might think when it comes to computer monitor because if you think about it, chances are 99% of the time you spend on your computer is by sitting right in front of the monitor even if you have like a 2-or-3-monitor setup. However depending on your sitting position, wider viewing angle might benefit you if you have ultrawide or bigger screens (27" and up) which is why they now make curved monitors. - For your own good, please consider the pixel density. 4K resolution on a 34" monitor is perfect, 4K resolution on a 27" monitor is not enjoyable, and 4K resolution on a 24" monitor is a nightmare. - If fps from your GPU > your monitor's refresh rate, then there is going to be a tearing effect. If fps from your GPU < your monitor's refresh rate, then there is going to be a stuttering effect. The bigger the gap, the more you can notice those phenomena. Solution for the first phenomenon is by enabling Vsync (if available in game settings), or get a higher refresh rate monitor. Solution for the other one, is by using adaptive Vsync. Adaptive Vsync allows your monitor to lower its refresh rate to match the fps pushed by your GPU, however it cannot push beyond the native refresh rate. Adaptive Vsync on Nvidia is called G-Sync, on AMD it's called FreeSync. G-Sync is more expensive because it requires additional hardware installed on the monitor, FreeSync doesn't so it's cheaper, however both do the same job. - A good TN panel can actually reproduce decent colors (almost on par with VA panel) if you're willing to do some color calibration. - If you're serious about color accuracy, try to find a monitor with AH-IPS panel, or PLS panel for Samsung monitors.

Well no, watching movies on any type of panel is perfectly fine, but for me personally, I prefer VA panels when it comes to watching movies on a monitor. It's very subjective though, some people might enjoy watching movies on an IPS monitor over VA. However if I had $700 and I want the best display just for movies then I'd probably go for an OLED TV.

I dont get why you're saying that 4K at 24' is a nightmare, apart from the fact that scaling is quite fucked up. Indeed, even tho I only own a 1440p/165Hz 24' monitor, I definitively LOVE the increase un pixel density and sharpness of the image over the 1080p variant. So I imagine that a 4K with 200% scaling would be just perfect with nearly no need of antialiasing.

Old VA and TN panels had absolutely horrible color reproduction... It is strange that now 10 years after baying my 42" LG TV with IPS panel for use as a monitor for about 650 dollars I struggle to find anything that can compete with for less than 1500 - 3000 dollars. You would think that in 10 years picture quality per dollar would go up not down...

The ideal monitor would be 120htz or 144 htz at 1440p for 27-32 inches and same refresh at 20-24 for 1080p. High refresh and cranked up textures are really the way to have the best experience. Just because you can play at a higher resolution with lower settings doesn't mean you should. If your multitasking, than a 16:10 monitor like dells u2415 or Asus's vs24ah-p is a really good idea, as it allows you to have more screen real-estate for content with tool bars on the screen(or for apple users with their big tool bar. )

I know I’m late but I want everyone new to gaming to know that having a 60hz monitor absolutely positively DOES NOT limit your FPS to 60. If your FPS is greater than HZ then there will be slight screen tear, vice versa there will be slight stuttering. If they’re synced up there will be slight input lag, unless you have a fancy monitor with g-sync or free-sync.

Can confirm this I dealt with screen tearing for a very long time with my 60hz monitor but the input lag would go away. If I synced up with vsync or otherwise capped the fps limit, the screen tearing would disappear but input lag became very noticeable.

It DOES limit fps. You can't get 400 fps on a 60 hz screen

I got hit with this issue the hard way a month ago or so. I wanted to get a matching monitor for my current primary, but got a VA by accident; the ghosting and backlight bleeding, UGH! Super unsightly. Returned/refunded it immediately. How could anyone stand that during gaming? Then just recently I wised up, did some research and ordered a TN, which my current primary is. So, I'm hoping the visual performance will match up and I'll have a much more fluid dual-monitor experience than I've been having, with my HANNS.G 17-incher vs 24-inch ViewSonic. Thanks for the video! Great stuff.

And i went from TN 144hz to VA super ultrawide with 120hz, and the colors are stronger and more alive, i didn't feel too much decrease in input lag, and my CRG90's HDR1000 really made games come alive as well.

Tubeless I’ve switched from the tn version to the ips. Mostly because i has a color banding issue. It is better but I wouldn’t say amazingly better, just better. The cool thing about it was I didn’t have to calibrate it. It looked good right when I turned it on. There is some backlight bleed, but not much to fuss over about. Besides is only really noticeable during dark/black scenes. Other than that, great monitor 👍🏻

Ive read elsewhere that ips panels are the ones that are typically plagued by backlight bleeding, with va having less to none of it. I’ve never had a va but I’ve bought two ips monitors recently and they both had horrible backlight bleeding. I’m sad that it looks like I’ll have to get TN because the colors did look amazing on these, but considering I needed this monitor for resident evil 2, a very dark game, I won’t be able to use either of them

Going from 1080p TN to 1440p IPS. That something worth living for. Don't want to even know what the even bigger jump to 2160p is (well heard there is some diminishing returns, even with the 3.8M pixel vs 8.2M difference)

Depends on budget as to what panel to get. I would rather get a tn on a budget rather than a ips. Budget ips panels are riddled with light bleed and have a higher latency than ips and if your getting one with FreeSync an ips panel will have a narrow FreeSync window compared to a tn panel. If not on a budget it’s ips all the way!

Hi, I heard that if you use a 144hz by the HDMI connection it will run at 60hz (that means limit of 60fps), if you want to see the 144hz first obviously your computer (video card mainly) has to achive 144 fps or more, but then if you need another connection that is called dual display port (or display port, or something like that), so if your video card doesnt have this port, there is no sense in buying a 144hz monitor. Is that true?? I have a RX 590, I havent read the manual yet but probably it is compatible.
