Never heard that term before but I guess I am a recovering Catholic as well. My mother converted when she was 26 also. The Catholic Church was of no assistance to her when she was widowed in her 30s with 4 daughters, one an infant. No doubt because she married a non Catholic in a mixed marriage where our father agreed we would be raised Catholic. Yet she believed and her faith got her through some rough times. I have to say she wasn’t a blind believer and did stick up for us when a priest or nun treated us unkindly. Thank goodness the Church is not just restricted to the English. It is true some people behaved other than according to Christ's Good News, and should know better. The Holy Roman Catholic Church is made up of sinners and saints because humans are inherently made up of Free Will which can go either way, tend towards goodness or reject it and falling for Satan. What is worrying is Stephen Fry is now luring people away from the Church like it or not, that is commissioned to bring the message of salvation to all. The Church has good people in it too. Yes some nuns and priests have been wicked. Perhaps they did not do what they were meant to do, and that is to have a clean up of the conscience at least monthly, as Our Lady is reminding us believers and ALL humanity to make a return to a belief in Her Son, and to do what He taught and still teaches for the Church is still alive and kicking with a constant message of conversion, a turning away from sin that he, Stephen Fry quotes, and live a sinless life. The Confessional should be used by all people. In fact, it is much better than a sitting at the Psychologist's. I am of Italian extraction and know of good Catholics. This man should stop tainting the whole church with the same filthy brush. He needs also to hear the sermon coming from the pulpit of a Catholic Church, and not the only sermon going on in his own head. He needs to make a pilgrimage to Medjugorje and be open to Jesus' mother's messages. He too needs to eat humble pie because the message of truth regarding eternity applies to him too. The only thing we own, Our Lady reminds us, is our SOUL. That is the thing we should be concerned about saving on this earth. Death will come to us all. Accumulating wealth and forgetting about this is the work of Satan. Satan wants nothing less than to have all humanity down in Hell with Him. The seers at Fatima freaked out when they were given the grace or chance to see what Heaven, Hell and Purgatory, were like. They preferred to die than to see more of Hell than was given them. So everyone might revel and enjoy Stephen Fry denouncing the Church so that he too can continue to live the lifestyle he wants which I think might not be in keeping with the Ten Commandments, but far be it from me to judge him, I shall leave that to Almighty God, and so in tainting the Church by giving it a bad name, he is inadvertently or deliberately saying he is living a better life by being outside the Church. Can we be sure? But, let me remind everyone that Christ made a claim that no other guru has made: 'No one goes to the Father except through me. Whoever sees me sees the Father. Only I have the words to eternal life.' Besides, that life starts on earth at mass, where we eat of His Body and drink of His Blood. The Last Supper, painted by Leondardo da Vinci was not depicting a booze up with his mates! NO, it was an invitation almost an admonition, to 'Do this, in memorial of me.' Do what? I hear you ask...Break the bread and drink the wine at mass, that when consecrated by one of his consecrated priests, become His Body and Blood, Holy Communion. ( This too is the reason that our protestant Christian Churches, in not being in Communion with Jesus' Church, i.e. with Rome, don't have the capacity or indeed the charism of bringing us Holy Communion and all the other Sacraments fully). In the modern world do we not hear said, that we are what we eat? Well, then, it follows that by eating and drinking of Jesus Christ we should then draw closer to Him becoming more like Him and strengthened in Him, we sin less and less. And, by availing ourselves of the Sacrament of Reconciliation or Confession we get stronger and stronger and can blind Satan not doing His bidding anymore, and can say we are going to save our soul, and be united with all those who've lived saintly lives. Perhaps counted among them are our loved ones who've gone before us, and live in eternity. The seers at Medjugorje have said they can't wait to go because there is nothing so beautiful on earth that can give credence to Heaven, to what it is like. We must all aspire to a life in Heaven, our final resting place. Satan's task, and he seems to be winning, is to make humans forget that Heaven exists. That money and fame is so egocentrically satisfying to distract us from one of the tenets of our Christian faith. Let's not heed his words but make a return to a belief in Christ even if the Church has been less than immaculate in the past. Stephen Fry might have some weight in cricitising the Church but he has no right to lead people on a path that leads to Perdition. The latter is what Satan's job or task is, and we should not follow Satan but Christ. Amen and Merry Christmas everyone.

As a catholic i feel catholic church has enlightened me and given me joy. All of those nonsense said by atheists about catholic church makes me even more devouted catholic.

So by saying nonsense are you suggesting that all that was said in reference to the RCC in this video is somehow made up ?? Are you suggesting that it's all lies with zero truth to what is said here ?? How can anyone stand up in public and make up these claims in front of countless people, in person and on social media and not be easily proven as a fake who makes up false stories about a huge institution like the RCC ? And if these things that he said do actually carry truth to them, how do you become even more devoted to a system that has and continues to victimize so many human beings. I understand your point but there is such a thing as obedience to the practice. It's Christ's dictate it is not the Church's per se. Don't blame the priest. He is really trying to do Christ's bidding, it is just that with hindsight it looks and feels evil, but essentially a priest also must toe the line with what the Apostles taught, i.e. the Gospel and it has a ruling body called the Magisterium. Your parents could have hung in there, prayed about it, understood that their union was not Sacramental yet, and just ate humble pie and restore the marital union via the Sacrament conferred by the Church. There is so much power and help contained therein. Many marriages are salvaged because of the power and assistance inherent in it because of the promise Christ made in it, indeed, inherent in all the Sacraments. I would prefer to lend my support to the promises Christ made and not to an outsider who will attack the Church if he doesn't fully understand it. On the surface Stephen Fry appears to be making good points, for which he is being praised by his online audience, but it is dangerous for it is leading people away or indeed confirming people in their hatred of the Church. Mary at Medjugorje is appearing daily if not monthly to some, and yearly to the last couple, to remind everyone that Jesus, her Son is the Messiah, did bring a doctrine to be upheld that leads to Heaven and don't give in to Satan. etc. Many conversions and reconversions are happening by people on pilgrimage to the former Yugoslavia. We should believe in Christ and not in any other guru who disputes Christ in His Church. If Fry doesn't like the institutionalised Church that is the Holy Roman Catholic Church well then, He can. He has free will. But, if he lures people away for fame and fortune, and self love, he should tread carefully for he will be made to answer for that. How will he explain to Almighty God, that he contributed in making people leave the Church and all her helps to get to Heaven? Jesus did make the claim that He had the words to eternal life, did he not? And, He also said that no one goes to the Father except through Him. Such big claims worth looking into for the outsider! Dropping the nukes on Japan could be called a good act for the lives it saved in prevention however the act of dropping the nukes outside of hindsight is in fact an incredibly evil act that took however many thousands of lives. If you can believe that for the ‘greater good’ evil acts can be allowed then surely that is the work of Satan himself and not god. Surely that is the most convincing argument that the devil can make. Congratulations on managing to evade one of the key points of Fry's argument here - that he was _not_ arguing for antitheism, nor condemning the very concept of organised religion, but the behaviour of a specific organisation. I've noticed that when people make sweeping generalisations about "organised religion" they generally refer to a handful of Christian denominations, some branches of Islam, and Orthodox Judaism. Rarely does the justification for the claim reach beyond the major Abrahamic faiths, and even when it does, it certainly doesn't cover nearly enough ground to back up so broad a claim.

Thank you for sharing your life story with me...Allow me to share a little of mine with you...Very many of my best years were spent in the company of some of the finest men and women that my country has ever produced..I have shared my life with them when the merde has hit the fan on more than one occasion. .They were the ones who went straight towards the danger when everybody else was running in the opposite direction..I have seen with them terrible carnage and indescribable human misery and sadness, especially that of children.I have witnessed things that would wring a tear from a stone...But there was no time for tears, there was a job to be done. I have witnessed acts of selfless courage that deserved rounds of rapturous applause. But none came, only the quiet satisfaction that the end result made it worthwhile..I am speaking of a special breed of person who are often derided and denigrated by people who believe themselves to be of a higher order of humanity.. Believe me , this world could function perfectly well without that higher order, but wouldn't get very far without the presence of my comrades..After many years I am still in contact with my friends of yesteryear..Many of them have had their children follow in their footsteps as my own sons have followed in mine..My own grandsons are now in the same profession and I am inordinately proud of them..I hope you can now understand why I am not moved by a grown man crying over the what a T.V. personality has to say, however said personality's vocabulary may be All he had to say still amounted to nothing more than his personal opinion ..He has his opinion I have mine Your friend chooses to be moved to tears, fine I choose to be totally unimpressed, that's fine also We all arrive at the place we find ourselves on the back of the lives we've lived .That's life...I know that this has been a bit on the long side, but that is just because due to circumstances beyond my control I will be away for some time, so I won't be around to reply to your next attack...Hopefully, all going well, I will be back before too long to continue our enjoyable discussion.@@Itisinthehand
