So, this is what happened.
The three of us came into the airport and the flight was delayed by nearly two hours.
We could tell that everyone was a little bit unhappy about this and Geoff (the banjo player in the video) suggested that we play a bit of the Galway girl, (this song is called The Galway Girl), in a music session. He played a set of traditional irish dance tunes on the banjo and I (Daoiri Farrell) backed him on the Bouzouki. Robbie Walsh (Bodhran Player) then joined us and we had the attention of everyone in the room immediatly.
I then proceeded to sing a song. I picked one that I thought everyone would know, The Galway Girl. It went down really well. By this stage my dad had the Canon out and here is the video footage he took. His name is Desmond Farrell and his hobby is photography.
Myself Geoff and Robbie are music pals for years. We were in Cumbria at a music festival called "Maddy Prior's Stepping stones Folk Festival".
My website is Daoiri.com and Robbie's is "The Bodhran Buzz" if anyone wants to check out anymore of our music.
I've recorded two solo albums now with Robbie and various things with Geoff also:
I Mainly play as a solo artist singing traditional songs such as these:
• Video
Or this one:
• The Best Kept Secret P...
which can be found on UKposts.
Thanks everyone and don't forget to subscribe.

On my first trip to Ireland in 1988, it was just after St. Patrick's Day. There were many Irish musicians on the plane returning home from their gigs in the US. As we got closer to Ireland, they started breaking out the instruments just like this. It was the best flight I ever had.

The magic of this scenario: 1: The musical talent. 2: the impromptu backup singers in the form of the 3 girls behind the singer. 3: The old man desperately attempting to adopt stoic disapproval ultimately let down by his feet proving the music has taken over. 4: The airport departure lounge setting, with music breaking down the barriers of interpersonal indifference uniting a group of strangers embracing the beauty of music erasing the inconvenience of a delayed flight. Ultimately, this video is the embodiment of perception dictating the experience of life. A lesson to us all that no matter what life throws at us we can always make the most of it and live a great life!

After attending a play in Kilkenny, Ireland in 1998, the cast invited the audience to join them at a local pub. I was the only one who went but they all pulled out instruments and it was the most amazing night! They played and sang, and it seemed as if everyone in the pub pulled out an instrument or sang. As an American, just visiting, it was magical. Out until 4am and some of the cast walked me back to where I was staying. Will never forget it.

When I lived in Ireland for a year I was drinking in a pub and a guy was in the corner quietly singing songs. I thought he was the musical act for the night, pretty soon everyone was singing too. I once had a delayed flight, just went and played the airport piano for my own enjoyment. I couldn't comprehend how much joy it brought to people and the gratitude they showed was absolutely immense, I will do it every time now, forever. There was just no way for me to reply, but it was an almost spiritual experience how happy it made those people and how closely it brought strangers and families together, as if the social barriers slowly were torn down and everyone's humanity just came out freely.

My only experience in Ireland was an airport, in uniform returning from Afghanistan. Troop commander set a limit of two drinks. The people at the bar and the workers in the duty free (who had set up sampling tables) were pretty sure they meant that we were only allowed to pay for two. It was a wonderful experience which could have only been made better by some spontaneous music like this. As it was I returned to the plane feeling pretty tipsy, and I don’t know if I paid for any.

I was at my friends fathers house one time, and there was a bulgarian man there who didn't speak english at all. But he played the guitar, and so did I. And even though we couldn't understand eachother at all, we did variations on songs, and showed off different musical theory during our playing together, and we smiled so much and understood that "language" very well. That's why I think music is real art. You can be from two very different cultures and not understand eachother, but music connects anyways.

How a large room full of people who don't know each other can join together in song and find happiness in the midst of what would otherwise have been a frustrating situation. This is so cool because you can really tell from this that Irish immigrants had a huge impact on early American music, such a bluegrass and folk
@dantecusolito8513
@dantecusolito8513 3 роки тому
@aimee curry American bluegrass music is a relatively new genre, only emerging in the 1950s with banjo players like earl scruggs and his 3 finger technique. It is a direct descendant of Appalachian "old time fiddle" music. Old time music is in turn a descendant of the music of Irish and Scottish fiddle music wedded with the music of slaves that were kidnapped and brought to the southern US. They brought with them the memories of the akonting, a string instrument with a skin head found in west africa. Enslaved musicians then used the materials available to them to create gourd banjos, which during the 1800s were "discovered" by white musicians and slowly morphed into modern banjos. Immigrants who then returned to Ireland brought with them tenor banjos, which became irish 4 string banjos and were incorporated into their trad music alongside the fiddles, whistles, and bodhrans. The bouzouki, which is seen in this video as well is not originally an Irish instrument, but a Greek one that was incorporated into the tunes of Irish music. Essentially most of the instruments of Ireland are not originally Irish, and certainly none of the "American" instruments are native. Ireland mostly just put new instruments into their musical tradition, but all of American music is a conglomeration of music and instruments from around the world.

I'm engaged to this Irish girl, she traveled back to Ireland to see family before this pandemic, shortly before all flights closed down, and now we are apart, this song helps me to cope with her absence.... Incidentally, she's from Galway. I'm currently in lockdown in Rome, and this lifts my spirits up. Thank you, truly. Hope to visit Ireland again when this is all over.

The more I hear traditional Irish music (and see traditional dance) the more I am delighted to listen to the connections between Appalachia history/culture/music and dance to those of the 'British Isles', not least of all that of Ireland. Your music has profoundly influenced not only that of Appalachia/South but that of the traditional 'country and western' music here in the US (and to the influence of Mexican music in the Southwest US. This happens a lot in Ireland. You get 3 or 4 people who have never met each other in a random pub and a session breaks out. No planning, no arrangement. Next tune is decided by the wiggle of an eyebrow or the tilt of a head. Never occurred that this doesn't happen everywhere

@@tamisweetie I visited Ireland in 1998 while on honeymoon with my first wife. The marriage last only 10 years but the memories of that trip still remain. It is a magical place, truly. I have not found nicer people anywhere in the world. And it's the people that make the place so magical. The Irish have a certain quality that is present in their personalities. This quality I have a hard time defining or even giving a name but the best I can come up with is freedom of imagination. And that freedom of imagination bleeds into all aspects of life having an effect on everything in ways that we can't necessarily see all right but only when you look closer. If that makes any sense. I have not been back since my honeymoon but hope to return some day sooner than later as I may not have all that many years left. I do hope you visit or relocate there someday as well. I don't think anyone's life is complete without visiting the place that some called the Emerald Isle. Shame it rains so much there! But it's a small price to pay
