I like how he went from barely being able to hover in place to being the world's fastest flying squirrel in less than two weeks

This was probably the hardest scene in the film to get right with regards to the special effects. Once the whole suit was on and everything was covered by shiny CGI metal plates it's easier to make the suit still seem like a real, mechanical object, but here they really had to make the inner workings of the boots and gloves look believable, with no CGI.

For those curious, the repulsor blasts work by intaking a surrounding volume of air, compressing it, ionizing it, then supercharging it to turn it into plasma, and using strong magnets to accelerate the ions out at 160,000 meters/second at minimum. To avoid the exiting ions from colliding with atmospheric air molecules at that speed (which would result in complete deafening sounds and extreme heat) Stark built a device around the magnets that creates a “column” of vacuum in the direction of the blast. This allows the exiting ions to not collide with surrounding air, and also to not collide with eachother because they all have the same charge. The vacuum column exterior then exerts high pressure force perpendicular to the column that prevents other surrounding air from flowing into the column. The more power he feeds into the plasma accelerator from his arc reactor, the faster he goes. This is why his beams take up the most energy of the suit.

Looking back, it has been an awesome ride at the movies. I feel so lucky to have enjoyed it since the beginning.

Fun fact, this is why he added the back stabilizer! It was extremely hard to just stay stationary at a height (and similarly, land cleanly), and the back stabilizer fixes both of these issues while giving him some other benefits during active flight too.

Is no one gonna talk about how quickly he makes these suits? Like he designed the boots and gauntlets for basic flight in 11 days and no doubt at least fabricated the armor right after, or maybe even had the armor made prior to this test. Given his only other design prior was a hacked together design from a cave that still couldn’t reach controlled flight properly. Truly a genius!

good thing about iron man, he works to get his powers rather than just getting it handed, by virtue of alien origin, or mutations etc.
