You might want to think twice before signing into that too-good-to-be-true "Free Airport Wi-Fi." It might not be what you think it is.

Because hackers know how other hackers work and how to protect yourself from your own attacks. Little is more embarrassing than having someone hack you to get data you hacked off someone else.

Molly its actually not. its completely useless for man in the middle attacks. If you are out, use your cellphone's internet intead of a public wifi. that or make an ssh tunnel to you home pc and check that your pc fingerprint is actually your pc's fingerprint, else it could be fake. the easy way is dont do important stuff connected to wifis you dont know or cant trust to be completely untapped. (like open wifis)

Gorzoid implying the user actually ensures that their page is served over HTTPS and that they aren't redirected to another site.
@dickndichu
@dickndichu 7 років тому
Gorzoid the dude is right. you can easily spoof a https cert and inject your own. the lock will appear on chrome but it would be the hacker authenticating you. unless you check the CA the hacker can use yours and his keys to decrypt then pass it to the original destination. aka man in the middle.
@DerMauch

Public wifi with password does not mean encryption takes place within the network and does not make it safe.
@B3tterTh4nU
@B3tterTh4nU 7 років тому
Password protected wifi uses encryption between the router and client. WEP's encryption, TKIP, and AES are the most common. If there is end-to-end authenticated encryption then the local network doesn't matter.
@laharl2k
@laharl2k 7 років тому
DerMauch - Bärtiges Wissen! still it does not protect you from man in the middle attacks. wherever you connect to, you are trustung your connection isnt being tapped into. if you dont verify your destination is the actual place you wanted and not a fake then encryption or not means nothing. All of it can be faked because for https or vpn, no one checks whether the fingerprint is the actual fingerprint and not one from china scammers inc.
@DerMauch
@DerMauch 7 років тому
@Laharl: The whole point of certificate authorities is to not need to check fingerprints. Https can not be faked unless someone happens to mess with the client directly (like superfish did).
@DerMauch
@DerMauch 7 років тому
@Undefined User: It does not. Once you are in the same network, man in the middle attacks or tapping traffic is the same as if there were no password.

@Axioanarchist

They say it that way because the Patreon donations are literally what is keeping the answers coming - meaning, they are paying for the videos answering the questions to be made. Hence why they chose to word it that way.

The answer is not very many, and that number keeps getting smaller as the vulnerabilities get harder to exploit, so no it not the same as a glory hole. Anyone seeing a dick peeking through the hole has a variety of options like chopping that dick off

And you are right. But the more security measures you have, the less likely you are to be hacked. I don't think encryptions that most websites used can be easily hacked. Most hacking happens with phishing attack, where hacker send you an infected file that steals password from your computer, not through wifi.
@Just_A_Dude
@Just_A_Dude 7 років тому
I deal with reports of identity theft and phishing emails received by our clients as part of my job at a financial institution. I can tell you the phishing attacks I see generally don't even have viruses in them. They're pure social engineering. Four easy tips to avoid those scams: EDIT: Wow, the bit below came out way longer than I expected. I tell people variants of that WAY too much. It just popped right out there. 1) Always, and I mean *ALWAYS* check the actual Name@Domain.com email address. Phishers will mask it behind something realistic-looking, but it will almost always be a free service or some janky domain. 2) Any bank worth its salt will customize their emails. That means that if it's legit the email will use your name and give you an account reference. Any "security alert" that says 'Dear Customer' and/or doesn't specify what account the problem is with is just plain fake. 3) No bank with security protocols that are up to snuff will use embedded links to their website. EVER. This is because phishing exists and there should be NO confusion. They'll simply tell you to go to their website or call. Embedded link = fraud. 4) Never, EVER call a number listed on an email or letter that you're concerned about. Look up a contact number independently and call that. *ADDENDUM TO 4:* Not all bank numbers are published or made publicly available. Just because the number you see on a letter/email isn't the one listed on the bank web-page doesn't absolutely mean it's fake. Call a known-good contact number to confirm if it otherwise looks plausible.

One other thing: if you login to a compromised wifi network https can also be hijacked, they can redirect certain https traffic through their own fake server at the same https url as the real site and see everything you send. If this happens, most modern browsers will detect it and will show a red warning next to the URL or a message about a bad certificate (altho sometimes it will warn for a legitimate site that has forgotten to update the cert).

How does this work with logging in on sites that remember your username and password? Can a hacker see that, before and after you send it, or can no one see it because you are not actually typing it? Internet safety can be confusing sometimes.... and I'm like a grandma with all computer stuff

that beginning section is extremely easy to pull off. all you need is a wifi adapter, any OS (preferably Linux), run a script (usually airmon-ng or any 'ng' scripts, or other clients), and boom you have a fake access point to rip info from people.

the little lock next to the "https" can be spoofed supposedly. so it's better to just follow "https" rather than looking for the lock.

Thank you for t'you don't know the basic confirmation I sought. I understood all this but suspected I should call vendor IT depts to double check. A couple confirmed what I thought, and you said, but another was acting like 1999 and just said 'you don't know who's at other end or who is watching.' Does the https connection ensure through various servers and routers as well? I suspect it would as it probably waits to browser to unencrypt.

The opposite of rogue hotspots is called "war driving"; where someone tries to connect to YOUR hotspot or home network...maybe from a laptop in someone's vehicle in your complex parking lot. Gotta be careful both ways.

0:35 True story,bro. The attacker doesn't even need to be in the coffee shop. If said shop does have wifi,you can just sniff the packets. This can all be done from a distance.
@fission1110

True. With a good directional antenna, an attacker can sniff your packets from up to a mile away.

Even with a VPN, https and a psk it still doesn't stop an attacker trying to access your device directly. Many APs don't have isolation and even if they did it's rarely configured.

That is why chrome has a giant "secure" / "not secure" button, and for the Gmail example, that's what EV SSL certificates are for. Chrome marks sites that have password login over http as not secure in red in the menu bar :)

One thing I wish you guys would've touched on is that even if the network is password protected, anyone that has that password can decrypt the traffic with that password, possibly along with metadata that's sent during the handshake. It's not even worth mentioning a password for public wifi.

How "Hackers" can get around a VPN. 1) Arpspoof their connection and don't forward any packets 2) Wait for the average person without any patience to turn off their VPN because "Its broken and come on who is really gona hack me..." 3) Start forwarding packets again and view everything going over the connection
