One of the most beautiful times of the year is spring bloom. The trees are filled with flowers and insects, which means the birds aren't far behind. I went out during peak bloom for some bird photography in the orchard with the Sony a7RIV (a7R4) and the 200-600. I take you behind the scenes while I spent a few days photographing and filming birds during this wonderful time.
Although the blooming period lasts around 10-14 days, peak bloom is really only a few days. During this time, many birds and wildlife are using the trees for various reasons. That combined with the wind, factor into the tree losing much of its petals. It's a race against the clock to get in some bird photography with the beautiful scenery. Hope you enjoy and happy birding!

Good time to put out nesting materials too that are NATURAL....they flock to it. Get a hanging ball you can stuff things into like a round seed feeder, and set it out with different materials and then track them back to their nest....way easier

I always love your videos! As an amateur bird photographer I would like to ask you a few questions: How necessary is camouflage? I see that you usually have camouflage in your videos but then you also have "naked" hands and face, will that scare birds? Would camouflage be needed to get closer or would wearing clothes that don't stand out in that environment together with covering anything that's glistening (hands, face, lens) work fine? I'm trying to find out what I should invest in but there's so many different opinions haha. I'm scared that if I invest in camouflaged clothing, I'll also need different types since it can get really cold here but also really hot... Keep making amazing content!

Thanks so much! It's hard to say, everyone has different needs, wants, expectations, and budget. Also depends what system you want (DSLR or Mirrorless) and which company you want to go with. There's a ton of options right now. If you narrow down your list, I'd suggest either renting them or going to a camera store and seeing the camera/lenses in person. Getting them in the hand for a bit definitely won't hurt before making a purchase!

You're amazing Stefano...love your photos! I am a newbie in bird photography. Been following your channel for a while now - I have learnt so much. I'm trying to follow all your recommendation. Quick question: you using a ball head rather than gimbal? Would love your input, I do want to move to a monopod setting since now i found out, don't have the biceps for handholding for too long lol
@StefanoIaniro
@StefanoIaniro 2 роки тому
So glad you're enjoying the channel! The head I'm currently using on my monopod is the Wimberley MH-100. It's a mono-gimbal and attaches directly to the replacement foot on my 200-600. If it wasn't for this type of monopod head, I would have never bought a monopod. I didn't want to use a traditional gimbal, and I didn't want to use a ballhead, so this was the perfect solution. If you search the model online, you'll find some videos on how people use it, then you can see if it's something that would work for you!

Hello! Wonderful video really relaxing! By the way... I am having some difficulties finding the best iso shutterspeed and aperture when filming with 60 fps please if you have any advice... Really nice video love your channel!
@StefanoIaniro
@StefanoIaniro 3 роки тому
Thanks so much! The rule of thumb is typically having your shutter speed double your video frame rate. So since you’re using 60 FPS, you want your shutter speed to be at 1/125th. This will give you the most appealing and realistic motion blur in your video. Besides that, it really comes down to how much light you have. If there’s a lot of light, I use the smallest ISO value I can to try to keep my lens aperture wide open (or close to it). And if there’s not a lot of light, I shoot the lens wide open, and raise the ISO

@StefanoIaniro

I use the Nikon Monarch 5, however I can’t really recommend them. For heavy use, especially during field work, they fall apart so quickly. I’ve had problems with the eye pieces from day one. A handful of biologists I worked with said they had similar problems. Some of the other monarchs are better I believe, but not a huge fan of these ones. I have a question, your Shutter Speed seems to be all over the place. From what I can see, you keep your lens wide open (always) and you try to keep your ISO below 1000. To do this, you are willing to decrease your Shutter Speed down to 1/50! I am new, and I always try to increase my SP to at least 640-800 of a second. This means that I also shoot wide open, but I increase my ISO. You seem to do the exact opposite, you risk motion blur to keep your ISO low. Am I correct to say that you try to keep it below 1000? I do shoot handheld, but I do have IS and IBIS.
@StefanoIaniro
@StefanoIaniro 3 роки тому
Yes, you're right in saying that, I typically shoot at lower SS. I would say the more common way to do it is as you described with raising your ISO and SS. I tend to shoot with low shutter speeds (for perched birds or birds with minimal action) more out of habit. When I first started learning bird photography, I was mostly in the jungle/dark forests, where I was always battling high ISOs. So it became a habit to use low shutter speeds to keep my ISO low. The lower the SS, the lower my hit rate, so I just take longer bursts of images to assure I get sharp photos. Especially on a camera like the a7RIV that isn't great with handling noise, I really do like to try to get the cleanest image out of camera, which means keeping my ISO as low as possible.

@ashtonturner5403
@ashtonturner5403 3 роки тому
@@StefanoIaniro Stefano i would love feedback on 2 things: 1st when you go out birding should you try to identify behavioural features etc and try to focus all your attention onto 1 bird but still documenting other birds you see but not to the nunber if you get what i mean just the specie, and 2 when you go out birding do you set yourseld up in ons spot and not move or do you have a bit of freedom and venture out on a trail? And P.s can you do a video on your camera settings for photography in depth?
@StefanoIaniro
@StefanoIaniro 3 роки тому
1. It really depends on the situation. I do a mix of both. Some days I go out just as a general birding/photography outing and get whatever I can find (I find this method the most fun). But I also have days where I try going after 1 species or behaviour, like in my Barred Owl video from this winter. When I'm going after a specific species, I try my best to not get distracted by anything else, but I may take a quick shot or two along the way. If I know a lot about a species, I can better understand when and where to get the behavior I want. But if I don't know much about a species, I like to do some outings where I'm just trying to observe and watch them to gather as much information as possible. You can get a lot of good info from field guides and stuff, but it never is quite the same as it is seeing them in the field. I keep a list of all the birds I see and hear in a day. 2. Same for this question, I do a mix of both. If I'm in the right habitat and location for the species I want, I tend to not move too much. But if I'm birding, say, during migration and I want to see what has migrated into the area, I'll typically walk through the woods and see what shows up. On average, choosing the right spot and sitting will give better results. But hiking and moving around will give you more diversity of species. It all comes down to what you're after!
