I remember playing with HA Switch Plate when it was released. It used the Nextion 2.4inch touch screen and fitted a standard wall plate (US / AU and some Eu plates). Use to feel fancy using a touch screen to turn on the light lol. The Nextion displays were always the expensive part. This looks pretty good in a premade commercial offering . I like it :)

A couple of observations, it seems you might only want this level of functionality in 1 or 2 rooms. In other rooms a simpler device with temperature sensor and ability to change it would be sufficient for most rooms. The need for power source will limit it's position in the room, not ideal for optimal temperature sensor readings. The need for neutral limits it's use is UK and ireland
@notenoughtech

I suspect 2-3 devices like this would be enough for household. At least with standard feature set. Once hacked with tasmota I can think of million reasons why to have it in each room :)

Here in Germany, the Thermostats are hanging on the wall close to the entrance - not ideal location either. I would install this device in any room, as typical functionality for me is: - thermostat setting + measurement - roller shutter control - light control, including dimmed main Light + ambient RGB LED lightning. - couple of selectable scenes - morning, evening, night. This is pretty much wall switches, if one makes it in conventional way. Neutral wire requirement limits it‘s use in Germany too, but I have routed it everywhere

Have you tried moving the tempurature sensor from the pcb yet? I would be interested to know if that improves the reading. I have only just ordered one so it will be a week or so until I can experement with it. Thanks for the detailed presentation. I do have a slight criticism though which applies to most of your youtube presentations. Motion video is a great tool to illustrate the functionality of equipment or devices. Animation is also quite an effective tool, Your clips are mostly showing your face in the style of a newsreader. No offense but people get tired from that. I do anyway. You could have actually installed this unit o the wall, it would have been a perfect guide for potential buyers. Saying all that I appreciate your effort.
@notenoughtech
@notenoughtech 2 роки тому
As I have further plans for the device in terms of filming putting it on the wall would be just getting in the way especially that I need to route extra wires in the wall to make this presentation. It would t bring extra functionality but looking a bit cleaner. As per motion videos or animation, they take both time and money. I try to have from 1- 3 videos a week on various topics that interest me and I'm not in position to hire animators to meet that deadline.

Nice panel BUT, the elephant in the room is the ewlink software. Is it just me, the idea of my data being sent to a cloud server owned by a Chinese company which by law in China must give the the Chinese government access to that date is a little concerning. Maybe I am being paranoid but I find the idea that the Chinese state can access the data from tens of thousands (if not millions) of European homes more than a little concerning. In simple trials I conducted, I found cheap Chinese security cameras would regularly try to "phone home" despite trying to restrict settings to stay within my local network. When we can get Tasmota or similar on these devices then I might consider them but until then, they are just to much of a security concern.
@notenoughtech
@notenoughtech 2 роки тому
As far as cloud goes I rather give my data to a country who has no jurisdiction in the country of my residence than the one that has. I wouldn't be overly paranoid over that if I'm honest. Tasmota is already available but until nice HMI menus pop out there is little reason to do this for the sake of hosting your own cloud. If you willing to spend some time in nextion editor you could have a nice little setup though

@@notenoughtech Great channel by the way, I watch regularly. I had not spotted the Tasmota firmware for this device allthough I base my whole home automation around Node Red, Tasmota and Zigbee and think I am pretty up to date with Tasmota firmware. My point about ewlink is that for home automation, in my mind it's better to stay within your own protected network rather than use the cloud. It's not difficult to do and you can set up external access fairly easly and securely. I believe in the old adage of "Nothing is ever free" so It is worth asking, what do ewlink get out of providing their software? Keep up the great work and thanks.

Thank you :) I agree with you about the need for having the option to do it "your way" I made an argument recently that I'd love DIY to be always an option (never a main choice) as you often find that majority or ppl just want to make things work without seeking a degree in computer science to set it up. Its fair not to expect IT skills from my mum to set up a lightbulb right? But having an option to have a completely offline scalable iot solution is a must have in my mind. Time will tell if matter will be the answer. For now we have ZigBee which kinda fills some of these needs.
