thank you for comparing, I met Cambly ads recently. I haven't understood their payment model at the beginning. I am using italic but for general conversation practice. Not sure about subscription model, it puts some obligations to plan your exercises.

Cambly is advertised to the customer as a service where you will be taught English. To the teachers they advertise that it is just for customers to practice their English and not really be taught. So it causes confusion as they give different messages.

As an iTalki teacher, I'd say that being able to set my own rate is a major plus. Even if I were earning less than another platform, I enjoy this freedom. With that said, it's not the be all end all, but it's a plus. Cheers for the video!

I am applying to work for Cambly. I have spent my lifetime writing- first for print and radio, then as a communications officer in various Canadian government departments. Now I have retired and I was disappointed when you stated that you get what you pay for. I tend to disagree as I for one chose Cambly for its affordability and quality. Many retired professionals who choose to work after retirement are doing it less for the money and more to help others. I would like to know that I can help people who really need to improve their English but cannot afford to pay very much because their currency conversion precludes that. Just a thought!

That's great! I think Cambly is great for those that are retired. I keep telling my dad he should do it. I'm in a similar position. I mostly did Cambly as a hobby. I love teaching people, and am happy to do so for the low wage that Cambly pays. Unfortunately, many teachers that need to do it for a job (and live in the UK or US - where the cost of living is higher) cannot live off a Cambly wage. Cambly also has one of the lowest requirements to become a teacher. Even the 'Professional Teachers' will often just have a TEFL that they got from the internet after doing a 2 hour course. In my experience, Cambly is great for improving your conversational English. But many other platforms will offer teachers at a higher price that will spend time preparing bespoke lessons for their students. I hope you enjoy working on Cambly. I really enjoy it, and you'll find meet some really nice students.

Hi David, I'd like to add one detail about iTalki. Many professors leave in their portfolio that they offer a homework. Only a few of them provide it in practice. I don't know how to fix it ... I've been taking lessons for my Son 5,8 years old 1 year already. I guess that is widespread tricky business strategy to leave nothing for students after himself.

Thanks for sharing. That's interesting. On Cambly I wouldn't expect tutors to set homework, since they are certainly not paid enough to do so. But on italki, where tutors can set higher rates, I would certainly expect them to be willing to create adaptive learning plans for students, and to set basic homework assignments if asked to do so.

@@ants_garden You have to realise Cambly pays less than minimum wage for a lot of English speaking countries so you get what you pay for. Most tutors could earn more working at McDonald's than working there. It's really a part time moneymaker for people with other jobs. It's unfortunate but an actual English teacher makes multiple times more money. A lot of tutors are just students or other ordinary people.

Some tutors started conversation on Cambly when their kids played loudly nearby. They didn't event try to find a quiet place. It's too hard for me to find a tutor I want to study with on Cambly. I'm ready to pay more for a better quality and I can do that on italki.

Yes I've seen that happen on a few platforms, it's not just limited to Cambly. Unfortunately, because of the pandemic, many teachers must look after their own children while continuing to teach. It's not an ideal situation. Though I do think that you get what you pay for, so if you want a more professional lesson, it may be better to try a platform like italki where you can pay more for a teacher that can create bespoke lessons for you.

@@keystoneenglish8423 If I can't hear a person at all I don't get what I pay for. It's not even a conversation. Cambly really has it's cons. One of them is quality of lessons.

@@zlatagordenko1441 It's not really meant for lessons. The company advertises very different to the customer than to the tutors. They accept anyone regardless of qualification and tell us its just for conversations and practice not really giving actual lessons. So the customer expects different from what the tutor is told and the pay is very low. Any good teacher could easily make much more elsewhere so its just a case of supply and demand.

italki is perhaps the more flexible of the two for payment. With italki you can pay for just one individual lesson with a tutor to see if you like the lesson. So if you are not sure if you would like this online style of learning English, perhaps you can book a trial lesson with a teacher on italki - usually they only cost around £4 for 30 minutes.

Even though the students can learn SOMETHING from any course or platform they are really for intermediate students.

Yes, I'd agree. I have had some students that didn't speak a word of English. It is really hard to teach them from the beginning. Cambly provides an 'English 101' course for absolute beginners, but many of them still struggle with this. I'd always recommend that students have at least a basic understanding of English before signing up to one of these tutor services. Intermediate students will certainly benefit the most from these services.

@@keystoneenglish8423, what the students want is to CONVERSE. Most of those you hear here speaking Spanish are doing MONOLOGUES. To speak another language you need to know how language works. Once you know THAT, then all the apps REALLY work!

@@mauriciovaca2791 , flaco, tenés que aprender como utilizar las trés operaciones basicas del lenguage: hablar de cosas que conoces como se llaman, pedir la totalidad de la información de las cosas que no conocés, y pedir información de las acciones. El resto, como "Hello", "Good Morning" etc., vienen en la segunda operación. Tenés que aprender como funciona el lenguaje en general. Esto es la clave de ser multilingue.

Yes, 'which is better' is fine. You can say 'which is best' or 'which is better'. Both are in common usage. Though I chose 'which is best' because that works better on the youtube algorithm.

So my question Can I talk to as many tutors as I can with the same fees? or Do I have to pay for every teacher every time? or Is there any other thing which you can share. You pay for a certain amount of time. In that amount of time, you are allowed to speak to as many tutors as you can. Is that clear, or do I need to explain more?
