For the lamp, consider cutting several spiral slots into the wood where it overlaps the glass. The air entering the chamber will be swirling upward and may result in an interesting effect for the flame. Thanks for showing the projects.

Nice idea.
@user-hj7zk5lo7c
@user-hj7zk5lo7c 5 місяців тому
That's the minimum. The slots are simply necessary, since without them the candle will die out very quickly due to the lack of oxygen flow.

There is no point in making spiral holes, especially since it is too complicated! It is enough to drill vertical holes in the wooden stand, and the stand needs to be raised - attach legs or something similar to it so that the air can flow freely from below. P.S. The easiest way to prevent a candle from going out in this case is to drill several horizontal holes in a wooden stand towards the center of the stand and then drill the stand from above so that the horizontal and vertical holes are connected. You will get L-shaped holes.
@marsogreen2411
@marsogreen2411 29 днів тому
Also, vertical slots in the wood or glass would give a tornado effect to the flame, if so desired

@JackMackWoodturning mine was the bank; because it's something to put near the entry way and is super interesting. Good conversation starter when having guests. The candle one is great too I just hate the smell of most wax personally. The wine glass is intriguing because if you leave the cork in long enough it might change the taste amd add complexity to the future pours. Good if your buying a case of your favorite red maybe?

I loved that you pushed the cork back into the bottle neck from inside. For me it was a great surprise as the plan all came together at the end as I wasn't trying to imagine ahead, just chillaxing.and examining the technique. I think for the wine glass, I'd want a shorter neck and a wider wood base so that it's more stable on the table! 😊 Plus real careful not to try to accidentally bend the bottle-neck when pressing down, but you had to hold the camera at the same time, probably, I get it.

Great work. One thing that is important to know is that the reason the internal combustion engine became the main engine for aircraft was that using a simple lathe, an all aluminum engine block could be carved out, with the pistons, etc. That was the key to the success of the Wright brothers. Internal combustion engines had been invented decades earlier, but the industrial smelting of aluminum with electricity had just been invented in the late 1880s, and it was not until then that aluminum became cheap enough for them to order a solid block of aluminum to make their aircraft engine. Making a jet engine with fan blades that could sustain the heat and stresses on an engine was a lot harder, which was why Whittle's early jet engines had centrifugal spinners.

A tip for you to try after sanding the edges of the bottles you can flame them on the edges where they were cut and glaze the glass back smooth you have to get the edge pretty hot but the end result is awesome.

As a retired manufacturing engineer (North Carolina USA) I really enjoyed seeing your process and chuck fixtures used to hold the various stages of your work in process.. very creative and functional! There is a similar video on YT of a woman in a camping scenario using oily twine tied around a bottle, then lighting the twine to heat a ring around it so the bottle separates when submerged in water. Variation on the same principle used here. There are some very creative geniuses in this world!

I saw a guy heating old bottles up, then he used pieces of glass and held them in his forge with pliers, and when the piece of glass was beginning to soften, he used a second pliers to pull the glass apart. By working quickly, he could create thin threads of glass that would stick to the side of the bottles he had cut apart. With different colors of glass, he made some really beautiful patterns! He made mostly drinking glasses, but also napkin holders (by cutting smaller bottles), and I remember some cool trays and a "pot protection" (not sure about the English word, but to protect the tablecloth or the actual table from the dirty or hot pot or pan), and his mix of wood and glass was truly a great idea. That made me think; why not make a tray with parts of fused glass and wood. You could prepare a "fika" in the garden, and with the tray, you can easily carry the buns and cookies, but instead of a thermos, you can have the coffee pot with you, as the tray have a detachable "pot-protection".

When I was working with cutting glass, we used to put electric tape over half of the metal end, opposite of the cutter. It was sometimes required to use the metal part against the glass, tapping the backside of the glass to make it crack along the cut, or if cutting a thin glass (like 4 mm or below), we would tap the glass using the coated half of the end of the cutting tool. Good to know; never cut glass and then wait to part it! In just a few minutes, it will start to fuse together again. Good to know, part 2; it never works cutting a circle and then just lift it away, like the burglars do in a movie. A cut never goes deep, it just scratch the surface, and by tapping it from the backside, the tension from the cut will cause it to crack right through when you tap. And by gently tapping along the cut, you'll spread the crack. Or, you can do it like the clip and use temperature to increase tension, but you don't want to submerge a whole window... Good to know 3; don't cut several times along one line. Press the tool against the surface, then you cut. Once. Good to know, 4 (out of 4, so I am done, now); The cutting pen/tool has a screw at the end of it. That is so that you can fill it with oil. Without the oil, it will be harder to work with it. The glass cracks because there's this tiny little steel wheel that rolls over the surface, and you pressing it against the glass will cause miniscule cracks to form right below the wheel and the tiny scratch that will cause. The oil will seep down in that crack and prevent the glass from gluing together. Yeah, you read that right; glass is NOT a solid. It is no fluid, neither, but if you look at windows that are a couple of centuries old, they are always thicker at the bottom, because they slowly "flow" down.

Previously from Horam and Eastbourne East Sussex; now in Albany Oregon USA. I found your video fascinating. And was pleased to see the 5 £ note, a little nostalgia there. I know very little about wood turning but wood in all its forms pleases me. Loved seeing the finished work ❤

What amazes me is that all the turning is done by eye. His eye is accurate to a thou!!! South Africa

Oh, that's clever! I've often thought the bottle tops looked like goblets to drink from, but you're the first I've seen actually make one. Wisconsin, USA

That was great. I bought a glass cutter to use with some beautiful bottles that I had left over. But I haven’t done anything because I did not know what to do with them. I’m no woodworker so I wouldn’t be able to do something like you did. Great job.😊❤

Definitely loved the wine glass. I was imagining how awesome a set of those would look on my dinner table. I was also amazed by your technique to cut the bottles. Much easier than using a hacksaw. LOL.

@@JackMackWoodturning yes I have. The results where not all that good. With the ones I had, I could not get a good clean score with the cutting wheel. So when I tried separating the cut, it would chip or crack. I've kept my eyes open for something better. Something like what you were doing. The cutting wheel staying steady, and making a good clean cut.
