Jaguar S Type R - One of the best kept secret V8 bargains on the market - BEARDS n CARS

The Jaguar S Type R is a somewhat mixed car when it comes to styling, with clear inspirations from Jaguars' past, such as the iconic Mk2. But its softer, more rounded approach leaned far away from Jaguar styling of the early 2000s and even in its 400 bhp V8 'R' form is an absolute steal on the used car market.
So what is the Jaguar STR actually like to drive, and more importantly - is it worth considering if you're in the market for a cheap supersaloon with a sports car heart? Let's find out...

I have owned 2 of these. Both ‘05’s. I really love this car. The upside is that they are unique and hold the last true “Jaguar” look before the 2009 lineup became conventional. The downside of these beauty’s is that the depreciation, which is big, although it makes it affordable, you may find yourself spend more on repairs and upkeep than what the car is worth. 1 bad year of repairs will exceed the value of the car. Unless of course, you yourself are able to work on them. Most people won’t.

I love my jag even for being the V6 model. OK on gas. Comfortable on the inside, easy to drive, quiet. It's been a turn key car for me, thankfully, but I love driving it to work on the highway everyday. Just hit 170K and still pulls hard, AC blows cold, shifts nice, interior still squishy. 👌

I bought an STR way back in 2003 - I still have it, though I don't drive it much now that I work from home. It's only done 150,000 miles. I live in California so there's no rust and the condition is excellent both inside and out. The wife thinks I should get rid of it and get something electric instead. But trade-in value is only about $2500-$3000 US. I still love it so much - so it might come down to who I love more - the wife or the Jag!

Got my late 07 STR since 10 years now and not even thinking about giving it away. When I bought it I also looked into a 08 X358 XJR and a Quattroporte. The looks made me choose the STR despite fewer options than the XJR and being a bit slower. The Maserati was outruled for reliability. The STR is actually very reliable, especially compared to the 01 E39 535i I had before. Still love my STR like on day one, also will keep it as an oldtimer later. Also consumption isn't bad, 31mpg at 80mph cruises is great for such a car

Love the channel and this review. I just purchased a 2003 S Type R I live in Florida but I'm originally from Cheadle Hulme in Cheshire, as a 57 year old I was raised with the likes of such cars as the XJS. so its time in my life to own a Jag so which one? I started looking at XJS but always liked the myth of the Gangster car from the 1960's the original S type so my eye started to shift to the newer S Type R finally one popped up in California at a very good price. Two months later here we are I'm the proud owner of a 2003 S Type R and I love it you can feel the pedigree in this car the way she sits on the road along with great classic looks she's in black and looks like a Bad Kitty, I'm dealing with ten years of non service all the usual stuff nothing really bad but she has low miles and is a rust free example so its a trade off all the normal stuff to service along with all four corners suspension ouch $$$$$. but there you have it a future classic. I like to be different with the cars I drive and you just don't see any S Type R on the road here. If you live in Florida and own an STR drop me a line guys I would love to Speak JAG with you. PS Buy one of these Classics Jags Now before the price goes through the roof, you definitely won't regret it.

Test drove pre facelift xfr a couple of months ago... dealer came along, unfortunately. This said, of course the looks are better than str. Immediate power, I can only imagine what it would be like if I drove it alone on a highway. 2 things I can’t stand about the xfr though are 1. The gear “wheel” selector thing, and 2. The fatass spokes on the steering wheel...awful, only Shaq could wrap his hands around it. Of course, the XFR is roughly 2x the cost of STR. A metallic green str is probably the best looking one, and whenever I see one with low miles and for a reasonable price, my imagination goes places.
@jorgemirat647
@jorgemirat647 2 роки тому
That unit tested must have an issue with the engine because th3 reviewer says that has no explosive power which is not the case on this model as it proves the 5.3s to 100km/h. One issue could also be the gearbox computer of the ZF6HP26 box which is adaptative and thus could have learned to drive "slow". This is a fast car as much as a Porsche 964
@HSGAutomotive
@HSGAutomotive 2 роки тому
A fast 0-60 time doesn't make a car feel fast. My own first car (a V10 Touareg) felt far more explosive than this with a 6.9 second 0-60 time in comparison. Fast, yes. Explosive, categorically not, as a former ZF XKR owner myself, and a current ZF Quattroporte driver which is technically slower than this at 5.6 seconds, but is far more responsive.
@jorgemirat647
@jorgemirat647 2 роки тому
@@HSGAutomotive thanks for answering but I insist that if that unit was not responsive it could be because an issue on it, like a gearbox computer that has learned to be not responsive, or an issue with the eaton compressor, an airleak, faulty coil packs, etc. I had the gearbox computer reset at Jaguar because overtime it had "learned" to not change on time from 1st to 2nd and from 5th to 6th. After the reset (battery "reset" doesn't affect) and gearbox oil change, it was like a completely different gearbox, it was as intended when it went out of the factory, making the car much more responsive. And I can compare it to my 964. Also, I cannot appreciate in the video if you were in sport mode or not, it makes a huge difference.

@@HSGAutomotive To be fair, it probably has a lot to do with it being one of the earlier Cambriocorsa style Quattroporte models. General consensus seems to be that the newer versions (2008 on I believe) are a much more pleasant driver/owner experience, and (at least here in Australia) they seem to hold their value better as well.
@HSGAutomotive
@HSGAutomotive 3 роки тому
Cambiocorsa, and the 4200 also uses that gearbox but doesn't suffer in the used values in the same way.
@pete3198
@pete3198 3 роки тому
@@HSGAutomotive Probably a few factors there I expect. Firstly the 4200 is more of a sports car, so I suppose buyers are probably more willing to opt for a transmission that's not ultra smooth and to shift manually to make the experience preferable. Probably also more likely to buy the car as a pure weekend car, where maintenance is less of a factor. On the other hand with the Quattroporte being more of a luxury limousine with a sporting character, probably safe to assume a lot of potential buyers in that market want a smooth shifting auto most of the time - and in auto mode the Cambriocorsa box isnt very smooth. Also people are probably more likely to buy a large luxury sedan like that with the aim of daily driving it, and the ability to do that is impacted by the maintenance requirements on that transmission. Given the above points it probably makes some sense that a Cambriocorsa equipped 4200 would be an easier sell on the used market them a likewise equipped Quattroporte. Also large flagship limousine style cars (S class, A8, 7 series, etc) do tend to have some of the worst resale value on the market in general, as opposed to sports cars which seem told hold their value a little better on average. Here in Australia the 4200's go for between $33k - $43k, and the later Quattroporte models (08 onwards, with the ZF) go for between $47k - $60k in AUD. So the ZF equipped models definitely sell for quite a bit more over here then the 4200 does - I believe the CC equipped Quattroportes sell for pretty close to what the 4200s do.

Bit of ageism in these videos, no? Got my 1st Jag, an x308 ‘01 XJR when I was 34. Also had an x100 ‘03 XK8 coupe at 37. Both are, to me, MASSIVELY more appealing than subsequent models. Endless charm, a certain “waftyness”, effortless refined power and beautiful design and materials make a Jag. A Jag should not aim to be a Porsche. I am 42 now, (maybe a little old?!?!) and have a six speed 911 (996) with sport exhaust. Fun, but also not a car for road trips. The Jag F-Type, though good looking, doesn’t feel like a proper Jag to me. Something has been lost over the years, and I prefer to continue living in the past when it comes to my cats!
