[WHEN PHONES WERE FUN: SONY ERICSSON K800I]
That modern smartphone you love so much? Turns out it has a license to kill (to which the blood of many an erstwhile everyday accessory can testify). The point-and-shoot digital camera I took from high school to college? Dead. Those dashboard GPSes adorning road-trip minivans for half a decade? Terminated. Even the humble wristwatch has taken a beating under the brutal onslaught of the ubiquitous smartphone.
So it’s ironic that the movie that rebooted the James Bond franchise, with a new 007 who would ultimately carry us through the next 15 years, was the last film to give Bond a mobile phone that could still be considered a “gadget” in the best traditions of the franchise.
The year is 2006; the film is Casino Royale; and the mobile is the last truly “gadget-y” Bond phone: The Sony Ericsson K800i. Welcome back to “When Phones Were Fun.”
[EDITORIAL NOTE]
TomTom is still very much in business; the narration in the above video refers to the dashboard-mounted GPS units with which its name was synonymous for many years. For the avoidance of confusion, TomTom can be found here: www.tomtom.com/en_us/

Around this era, I bought unlocked phones from Amazon. I bought two Sony Ericsson, the W900 and the W850. I liked them both but the former wasn't really usable in America (I didn't understand the different cell bands at the time), and the latter was nice but I ended up not using the Walkman feature a lot. But overall, I really like their design and still had fun with them.

I'm still a Sony phone adherent after owning the W850i when I was at school, then a slew of Xperias. Despite clearly being android devices nowadays, they still have proper EQ function for music and a really nice UI. It's also just nice to be a little bit different, especially when they are still properly bleeding edge phones in a lot of cases. The only real downside is the lack of peripherals such as cases. My old XZ3 was a genuine game changer - one of the first phones with a 4k display and one of the first with wireless charging. I still have it as my backup after it put in a healthy 4 and a bit years of service and it still works perfectly, albeit with a bit of battery degradation.

Seriously. There were some neat phones that came out years back, but especially in the years leading up to smartphones. That was when computer tech was getting to the point that screens, CPUs, and other hardware could be miniaturized to the size of a handheld phone whilst retaining a lot more functionality, but not completely breaking the bank so any average consumer from a prosperous country could afford to get them if they really wanted to. That said, nowadays it honestly is better, overall. Sure, most phones are basically the same as any other smartphone, just varying in degrees of quality, but phones are cheap to the point that even people from poorer regions or crippling debt are as likely as not to have at least a basic smartphone, if they want or need one. Though there is some absurdity in the notion that some people are living very rough, but still have what would have been basically something straight out of a sci-fi not too long ago.

I think I finally understand why I like these videos. You give the device, whether it's an old phone or the z flip or whatever...you give it context. You put it in a frame and hang it on a wall and show us how great it is. You go over the specs, but incidentally, almost as if you're embarrassed to have to do it -- and then you get back to telling the story of the device. That's what makes you better than all the other tech guys out there. Keep up the good work.

Later I had to choose between a W880i and a K800i, I chose the W880i just because of the D-pad over the annoying joystick. I was amazed by the stylish look, it’s OS with animated backgrounds, great camera and powerful hardware that allowed me to play games like galaxy on fire, deep submarine odyssey, rally master pro and blades n magic (I was a massive fishlabs fan at the time, but games like sola rola also deserve a shout out). I still have this phone to this day but unfortunately with a smashed screen

That Sony Xperia 1 III from earlier with the highly customisable camera features, a luscious 4K ultrawide screen with 120hz and 240hz motion blur reduction? Sony has a much bigger problem then producing "the best phone" (which clearly isnt the case if you watch mr mobile and other youtubers, since hardware isnt everything). Michael, you've hit me with the nostalgia train. My first 'fancy' phone was the K800i. I loved it and I felt so proud to finally be able to afford something wonderful at the age of 18......when smartphones didn't exist within normal parlance and this was about as special as you could get in the mainstream sphere. Now, it wasn't perfect. The battery life was dicey (but I had come from a Nokia 3310!), the chargers seemed to give up every 2-3 months without fail and the camera slide cover tended to become loose over continued use and eventually would pop open by blowing on it. None the less, I revelled in owning it! Thank you for the video, I really enjoyed it.

Some true classics in their lineups all the way through, I think I must have had a good 7-8 over the years. In 2009 my now ex-wife was resistant to jump on the smartphone bandwagon, especially after seeing me struggle with buggy early Android phones, and bought a Sony Ericsson Tm717 instead. It was a great device that had most of the features of a smartphone in an era when Telenav was superior to Google Maps. I remember her phone routing me around traffic when I was going to the airport one time. It was like magic and saved me from missing my flight.

Man, this one took me down memory lane! I bought a K800i when I was 17 and had it for 7 or 8 years. I loved it and worked without any issues. At the time it was one the best (if not the best) phone any of my friends had. I used to host semi-regular mini golf tournament on the phone; each one of us would play, get a score, and hand the phone to the next contestant 😂 Feels like yesterday!!

Loved this. It’s like LGR but for mobile phone haha. Not to compare since both of you produced fantastic contents anyway but man I felt nostalgic for a product I didn’t even own. Great job Michael!

I had and sold this phone, the all black version. This is one of the best phones I ever experienced. This series is really well named. Because at the time, phones were fun, were different and it was always an experience to discover and test. Now like most things, everything looks alike.

I think Sony has had a really consistently great design language, and I was always reminded so by Daniel Craig. I was very surprised to see Nokia in the most recent movie lol.

Except majority of Sony Ericsson designs weren't Sony styled, the Iconic T68i, and the P800 which Steve Jobs admired so much before conceptualizing the iphone were made with Scandinavian design philosophy.

Back on 2006 I had a motorola razr V3, with the 1.3mp camera, 3.2mp was mind-blowing resolution for a phone, my digital camera, at that time, from olympus, was only 2.0! As always, great script and video Michael

Seeing you go through the phone's UI is hitting me with so much nostalgia. I had the same phone model growing up, along with the K750i. I, unfortunately, lost it when the repairperson my dad sent the phone to disappeared and stole the phone along with it, which is probably one of the most frustrating memories I had because I loved the phone a lot lol. I always liked Sony Ericsson phones, that's really the only phone brand my family was ever loyal to. My K750i even last so long from my middle school years until my final high school years (and it's only because I was forced to switch to a smartphone).

Yay the first one of this series to feature a phone I owned. You're right the sliding lenses cover was super useful and satisfying. I remember ditching it reluctantly for an early 3g equipped phone.

The Ericsson t68i was my first phone with a colored screen. I remember buying the camera module that you had to attach at the bottom. The OEM plastic shell style case that came with the phone that had a belt clip and lanyard was one of the best cases ever.

I had a Sony Ericsson (W302)! Back in the day, they were all the rage in Brazil (especially the W380), the focus on audio was enough to go make every other teenager go crazy and save up every single penny they had just so they could listen to Nirvana and My Chemical Romance on the best phone possible.

(8:49) That's a sad ending, but at the same time, it's somehow reminding me of Galaxy Themes. Thanks for showing us that so that none of us would have to do it ourselves, though it might've been a O2 thing to make the special theme a trial. Meanwhile, around that time, I was free to switch to whatever themes I wanted on Windows Mobile, including a theme that mimicked iPhone OS 1.0 as far as Windows Mobile theming at the time would allow.

I had a k800i in black and it was my best phone until I entered the smartphone universe. Amazing photos with real flash, that sliding thing to open the camera was very very useful as I'm a car guy and this feature made it faster to capture one if passing by. As a music player it was great with the extra memory card and also it had a side button to play/pause. The building quality was top notch, very solid buttons and great design. @MrMobile, it probably went unnoticed, but those 2 little rectangle chrome things next to the earpiece are actually buttons as well (shortcuts). Thanks for the video, very nostalgic! 😀

It wasn’t until Quantum of Solace that i took the plunge on the C902 Cybershot… LOVED that phone and it was the last classic ‘candy bar’ phone I ever owned before the iPhone/ touch screen revolution! This video really resonated with me! Thank you!

I know this phone very well. My dad had it for years. I played that golf game all the time. Alot of my family memories are shot using that camera. We we're looking at the pictures from back then, and boy i was surprised by the image quality. If you didnt shake while taking pictures, they would've looked great. And yes i remember playing with all of those themes and wallpapers, they we're gorgeous. Oh man this video was soo nostalgic for me. My dad had the black model it looked much better compared to this silver james bond color. Beautiful script as always michael, loved the video ❤️❤️
