As someone who has grown up with an alcoholic abusive mother, seeing James speaking abt being sober is really comforting to me, bc it proves that people can change. People will still out of selfish reasons try to convince me my mum is secretly drinking and it triggers me a lot. It's so helpful to know other people have the same experience as her and are able to stop. Reminds me she has too

Need more of this. Only the highs of alcohol use are shown on social media, but most people don't know how harmful it can be until themselves or someone close to them suffers with addiction. Good to see Happy Hour bringing up the realities of addiction again, and massive respect to all the guests who have shared their stories

As someone who has battled with alcohol addiction I really appreciate the openness, alcohol can fell like the solver of all problems but can also feel like the cause of all problems, it is extremely hard to detox off of alcohol because it is one of the few drugs that can kill you if you go cold Turkey. please if you are going to drink give it at least a week before you drink again, alcohol dependency is a horrible thing to go through and I really hope nobody has to experience it ever again . I went through something like this with weed and alcohol. From 2020 until only a month and a half ago I had spent every single night either stoned, drunk or both. I never saw it as an issue because it was always an evening thing and I’d never smoke or drink in the morning so it must not have been a problem right? Well it completely changed my personality when I was sober. I became so much more paranoid and socially anxious and I’d spend all day at work thinking about when I could just get home lock myself alone in my room and just get fucked up. I had serious depression I hated my life I hated who I had become so a month and a half ago I completely ditched the weed and I only drink if I’m outside the house with friends now never to the point of being hammered. I feel myself returning to the old me my anxiety is getting better and I’m a lot better in social settings again.

this is so helpful to read. I am at the point now where I am stoned and or drunk every single night and I've been feeling really shitty in the day lately, been way more anxious and snappy towards other people and just wanting to sleep all of the time. At night all I want to do is eat and I'm also on medication that makes me hungry so the combination of that and the weed makes me wake up in the night and down packets of crisps, I've never done that before in my life. I definitely need to give it a rest I think and see how I feel, from the sound of it I will only feel better

I stopped drinking about a month ago, it definitely became a crutch- for years. The final straw was a week-long hangover! One of the things that helped me most was having friends who rarely drink, so we're not always going to bars and pubs- now I actually do things! I never realised that I could have a good time and open up without alcohol, but it turns out I can, who knew. I can also go to a bar and not have alcohol, something which seemed completely alien to me just a few months ago. Thanks for talking about this guys, younger lads are so often ignored when it comes to alcohol abuse/ issues.

I was in a relationsip at 19 with someone who lied to me about alot. Even their age. The relationship got so bad it too me a 6 months to leave and i was stalked after. For a year of being with them we lived close. We went out every weekend. I started drinking at clubs, then heavily drinking (around 8 shots minimum before the night even started) then i started drinking heavily at resturants and parties and after that i noticed i was drinking every day at home and putting alcohol in my drinks for work and university. I woke up almost everyday hungover and didnt realise until I stopped. Even after i left i was still drinking daily from the constant harrasment. I didnt notice how much i drank until i found a draw with my habit in it. I keep things to diy them into new items and in front of me was a bed side dresser full of bottle caps. Now i dont drink except for a taste of something i like. Never more than 1 in an evening. And never more than 1 in a week. I made the rules to keep me mentally checked because i didnt realize how far i fell until i was dangling off the cliff. Its nice hearing someone with a platform talk about how alcohol can cause an effect before you even realize it.
@Ben-Reid

Hit 17/18 and began heavily drinking and popping pills near enough every night. Coming into work hungover only to try and clock out early to go to the pub. Finding anybody and everybody to go get a pint with because the rest of your work mates were still actually doing their jobs. It all felt normal at the time, nobody really saw it as a problem because of my age, but I had no self control at all. Had a wake up call when a childhood friend told me he didn't wanna hang out anymore because any time we'd go out I'd get drunk and start a fight just for the sake of it as opposed to actually wanting to talk to my mates and catch up. I was sleeping on a mate's floor in a juvie homeless house just because it was closer to work and the pub instead of my actual family home. What an idiot Can't even stomach much more than a beer nowadays. Never considered myself an 'alcoholic' as it only happened over the span of 2-3 years but I dunno if thats just a way of me trying to avoid the stigma. I was easily having 6-8 pints a night plus shots and some cocktails for good measure. The drugs didn't help I guess. Long past me now but something I still think about to this day

Reminds me of a friend I have, if I can even call him a friend anymore, we used to chat while he was sober just fine, now he only gives me a call when he's 2g of coke deep and asks if I wanna get some alcohol to join him and this happens about twice a week, maybe 3, but apparently he's been doing coke about 5 times a week just for the sake of it and then drinks a 70cl vodka bottle after at about 4am, and I don't want any part of it, worst part is he has a gf that he kind of forces to do it with him when she doesn't want to, guess the only way he'll have his wake up call is when he overdoses

@@shanegallagher3524 Sorry for this message being long but: I was paid weekly at the time, and a typical day would see us working at least 10 hours so I always had a few hundred quid in my pocket come friday. I was always able to perform at least at the start so would get some decent monthly bonuses too which would help carry me over. It wasn't odd to have your mates and coworkers buying you drinks too, everyone just kinda embraced that heavy drinking and clubbing culture (which is fine - it had just evolved beyond fun for me) There was no semblance of savings - I didn't care about holding on to money on any given week because I knew I'd make it back on the next. So I'd just spend it all on whatever was on offer at Spoons. I had no outgoings - I was living on my mates floor whose rent was a whole £10 a week due to it being flats for the homeless who were trying to get back on their feet. I had a shitty iPhone 5S that I now owned out of contract, and never bothered to drive at the time (thank god) due to me living a road away from the pub and my workplace. So my entire wage just went on fast food, alcohol, tobacco and drugs on a monthly basis, plus a few little household items / hygiene stuff for when we were back in the flat

I get the same thing, I think it's probably worse for guys with lad culture etc, but even as a 23yr old woman it gets awkward sometimes. I think a lot of people think that as sober people we judge them and their decisions, so they deflect that embarrassment onto us by mocking and making us feel like the odd ones out. You just need to find the right group of friends, who feel comfortable enough to drink if they want to, while also respecting your decisions and boundaries, and knowing you can all have fun regardless of whether alcohol is involved.

Watching this really has me reconsidering my own life. I have never really been one to drink but I'm getting to this point with weed. I love how it makes me feel in the moment and I've made some of the best memories while smoking but the rest of the time i just feel a bit shit. I'm drowsy and depressed and even irritable when I'm not stoned (although being completely sober is a rarity for me these days). The whole reason i started smoking was because i was (still am) struggling with an ED and weed makes you super hungry. Thing is i didn't actually deal with the problems surrounding my eating, i just masked them by only eating while stoned. It didn't really fix anything because i still can't eat sober. Also I'm autistic and the only time i feel like i can properly relax and be myself around others is when I'm stoned. They say weed isn't addictive (because chemically it isn't) but you can most definitely get addicted to that feeling of relief.
@iloveneonfrogs3434
@iloveneonfrogs3434 10 місяців тому
Smoking weed makes people feel good and that's why they do it. But one thing modern society doesn't know now they're normalising recreational weed is that it can fuck your mind up later in life. My family members who are older have seen friends and people they know turn into anxious paranoid voids of people due to their weed use in the past. So do be careful with how much you consume, as once your brain is used to that sensation it can be hard to function without it. Good luck on recovery tho

The idea that weed can't be addictive is absolutely not true, otherwise non-drug related addictions/disorders, such as eating disorders, over-exercising, self-harm, gambling, hypersexuality and so on and so forth wouldn't exist. I think "drinking culture" is a pretty big problem in the UK, to be honest. it's so normalised for people to go out drinking and get hammered at least once or twice a week and get extremely hungover, arguably becoming addicted, yet people rarely see a real issue with it because it's "just for social reasons" and often times just see it as something mildly funny instead of the potentially dangerous substance that it is. Grown adults, young adults, people at uni, even kids and teenagers will drink to the point of throwing up. I can't imagine how many people have struggled with alcoholism and couldn't get out because their friends and family are all drinking and having fun and they feel pressured
@hollyberry0602
@hollyberry0602 10 місяців тому
I completely agree. As a brit, drinking heavily is such a common joke that I can imagine it's so hard to see it as a problem. I remember being in college, like age 17/18, and just the amount of people in my class who confessed to regularly being blackout drunk was astounding (IDK if they were all being completely honest, but the fact that it was joked about kind of disturbed me). I feel like there's almost this expectation when you become an adult that now you can drink, you will. So many birthdays cards are about getting completely wasted and I just don't think it's funny. It's so normalised to drink to that extent.
@Minceraft69
@Minceraft69 10 місяців тому
@@hollyberry0602 I bet most of them were being honest. It's like we've made drinking too much something to be proud of. Maybe because I've never been interested in partying/clubbing, I don't get to see that people's enjoyment of it balances out the drawbacks of excessive drinking. But from where I stand, the way many Brits treat it seems extremely unhealthy - it just seems pretty mad that otherwise intelligent people can treat them getting blackout drunk like a funny joke and don't acknowledge it's an actual issue, unless they're like James and start to realise it's not doing them any good. But yet, it is so normalised by our society that it's completely understandable people don't think or dont care. Yeah, I forgot about the birthday cards! That's pretty crazy too. I turned 18 in January (didn't get any alcohol themed birthday cards), but I did get quite a few older family members/family friends being like "ooooh you'll be able to drink now!!"

He also uploads those way more consistently than he ever did on his commentary channel. This isn't to say that you should feel bad for enjoying that content, of course not, but in my opinion, one should respect the artist's wishes... and he feels that his current content is what represents him, and his old self is someone he doesn't want people to miss. I think the problem with drinking is now we have more of a mental health crisis people can’t handle their emotions normally never mind under the influence. I don’t think there’s anything wrong with alcohol use because it is a really good social lubricant. For me I always used to try and pull when I was really really drunk mostly because I’d been bullied for my looks and now I’m older and have more confidence I want to make up for lost time I guess. In reality it never ends up well and I either come across as a dickhead to girls or I would end up with someone I had zero attraction too.

Ik, this about addition but there is nothing wrong with having a few drinks at the bar/pub with your mates or having a wild night. don't think you have an addiction when you don't. Alcohol making things worse, doesn't apply to everyone. drink because you enjoy it, not because to escape. I am a heavy drinker but I feel it has no effect on me mentally. so this is just a heads up for those in the comments who might see this, to not be scared of the booze (James's experience or anyone's may not apply to you). its all experience and perspective.

It's not cool to mock people for taking care of their mental health. Your feelings around alcohol are your own and I will respect them, but please show the same courtesy for others. Deciding not to drink doesn't make him or anyone else pathetic. Choosing a lifestyle that allows him to feel happiness is the biggest win.

How? Surely if he continued to drink that would make him more of a troubled artist. Sorting your life out isn't a bad thing lmao.

Or, yk, he understands the harmful attitude towards alchohol and wants to share his experiences to let people know that its okay and that it's possible to escape it? Some people want to use their influence for positive reasons you know

Literally his friends speak about how bad his drinking was too. Not just him, he's not trying to have troubled artist vibes, he's just speaking abt smth that made his life better. Not everyone who opens up abt their difficulties in life is doing it for sympathy votes, it just makes them human.

I don't understand people who don't like alcohol. Seems weird to me, obviously the day after sometimes sucks but it makes you happy go lucky, care free, you let your inhibitions go, you talk to everyone, or even at home makes you chilled out. Effects people differently I guess.

I love a drink and will never fully give it up, but me and my partner did 2 months zero alcohol at the start of the year after 2 years of covid induced alcohol issues, and my creativity, attention span and motivation for a lot of life that I lost over covidcame right back. And we both lost lots of bloat and weight. Now I only occasionally drink, but never get drunk. Feel worlds better for it, and fully recommend stepping away from it more. The night of drinking feels good, but feeling amazing day to day feels better

I mean I'll respect anyone who wants to drink alcohol, but I don't like the idea that everyone SHOULD drink. I absolutely don't want to drink because I don't like the idea of not being 100% in control. My sister has told me how she's been out drinking and doesn't remember half of what happened and I would hate to be in that situation. Whether or not you want to or enjoy drinking is a super personal choice imo
